Tyson workers revote; Labor Day brought back
Shelbyville Times-Gazette ^ | August 8, 2008 | Bbrian Mosely

Posted on 08/08/2008 12:31:34 PM PDT by radu

Members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) and Tyson Foods workers at the poultry processing plant in Shelbyville overwhelmingly voted to overturn a union contract provision that replaced Labor Day as a paid holiday with the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, it was announced this morning. The new agreement will increase the number of paid days off for workers in the current calendar year to include both Labor Day and the Muslim observance as paid holidays for workers in the Shelbyville plant.

The agreement amends the existing contract negotiated last year, according to a press release from the RWDSU.

In a letter to the Times-Gazette published Thursday, Ray, Shelbyville Mayor Wallace Cartwright, Democratic State Rep. Curt Cobb, and Republican State Sen. Jim Tracy said that substituting Labor Day "for a non-traditional holiday is unacceptable."

I know other threads about this have already been posted today, but this is the local paper that broke the original news about this issue.

Yeah, like the union workers would turn down getting an EXTRA paid holiday. Sorry, Tyson, I don’t see the word “INSTEAD” in there. Not good enough.

Maybe we have been witness to a diabolically clever ploy to cadge another paid day off; start a forest fire and then get paid to stomp it out.

Let me get this straight. The muzzies had a tantrum, Tyson caved and now they get an extra day off.

The heat has been turned up and maybe we’ll see something different in next year’s contract.
The fight against this encroachment on our values and traditions had to start somewhere and we might be seeing the first shot.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah, like the union workers would turn down getting an EXTRA paid holiday.

I thought it was just for this calendar year, and then they go back to 8 paid holidays including one "personal day" so the muslims can use that for their whatever-celebration.

There’s an extra day off this year, but next year it goes back to 8 paid holidays. It’s laid out in the full article.

Still doesn’t really work, in the minds of many of us.

No, a bunch of redneck bigots threw a tantrum. Tyson tried to appease them by restoring Labor Day, essentially giving the union one extra paid day off.

Reneck bigots still not happy.

Why it matters to anyone else what two parties mutually agree to in a contract has yet to be explained.

One can only hope this is the little snowball getting ready to roll down the hill to become a big snowball.
Americans just might be waking up to the big problem - the Islamazation of America - and doing what they’re able to put a stop to it.
It’s a small step but it has to start somewhere. Though this change in the holiday plan doesn’t cut the mustard, we don’t know what the next step will be.

We can only hope at this point.

I tend to agree with you.

Christians take Good Friday as a holiday as it is significant in our religion; whats the problem with Muslim workers taking a holiday for a day they consider significant to their faith?

And don’t give me that slippery slope argument, it is bunk. You can argue ‘slippery slope’ on just about any topic known to man.

Not redneck bigots. Redneck Americans who do not want to see this country destroyed. While many seem to be blind to it, some of us see what the muslims are doing across the country to undermine our way of life.

If standing up and saying “Enough is enough!” makes them bigots in your eyes, so be it. I can’t change your mind and won’t try.

“redneck bigots threw a tantrum”

It actually was Americans angry at the islamazation of America. It’s been proven in other countrys that it starts out small and then snowballs. We are just doing what we can to prevent it. My ancestors did not come to America expecting special treatment. They were grateful for the opportunity.

Maybe some rednecks here, but no bigots

Most companies avoid the issue by going with the legally-mandated stat holidays plus a couple of personal days. It’s win-win because in addition to keeping employees happy, it reduces abuse of sick days.

Thank you. The reasonable are few and far between on here anymore.

If the workers were Jewish and wanted Yom Kippur off, it would not be such a big deal. If you start denying a minority the right to negotiate for their religious holidays, you tear away a piece of what America is supposed to be about.

Nonsense. Get a grip. It's a union labor contract, an agreement between two private parties.

The union where I work gets a paid holiday for the first day of deer hunting season. Don't tell me that this is the first time and some special treatment for Muslims.

If the majority was Italian and wanted off for Columbus day, would you begrudge them and Tyson the ability to freely decide what holidays they want?

I'm not going to call anyone a bigot here. But my question is- if a private company agrees to give its workers certain days off, why should anyone care what days they mutually agree upon?

If I ran a company and the union voted to take Groucho Marx's birthday off, rather than Labor Day, I wouldn't care, so long as it did not cost me anything extra.

I think what really touched a nerve was the fact a long-standing paid holiday was dumped at the wishes of a minority of employees.
Plus the fact people are aware how the muslims are undermining the American Way, one step at a time.

Look at the problems Europe has due to the muslims who have moved there. Europeans have caved to the point that Sharia law is being put into their books. A lot of folks in this country have looked and do not want that here. The only way to stop it is to speak out, and that’s what is happening here.

It has to start somewhere.

Redneck bigots

And what do you call Muslims who do not permit non-Muslims to visit Mecca or Medina or to build Christian churches or Jewish temples in their countries? Can only Americans and Westerners be 'bigots'?

This is not Rednecking, it is backlash to the hypocrisy where concessions are made to Muslims but Muslims do not concede in kind, nor are the expected to, in light of P.C. sensitivity to their culture. I see, so when Muslims do it, it's not bigotry, it's deeply held 'religious' belief that must be accommodated. Keep up that way of thinking and the time will come when nobody gets a vote.
