Russian television Friday showed a convoy of Russian tanks and said they were heading into the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia as escalating tensions over the region threatened to boil into full blown conflict.

Wow, be interesting to see what happens here. Unfortunately for me I haven’t been following this closely.
obviously they didn’t learn anything from their last visit to Afganistan. I don’t think this will go as smoothly as they planned
This is probably a game of chicken here.
I have to say I’m quite interested in gauging the quality of the Russian military. My guess is that they are not up to this task at all.
Georgia sent thousands of men to Iraq. What is America doing to help Georgia ?
The US have bases and a lot of personnal there.
Prayers for our Soldiers on the ground in Georgia. We have some there conducting training.

Concrete shielding - uhhh, concrete shielding?
Hey, anybody know where a guy can get six feet of concrete radiation shielding in a San Francisco on a Friday - quick?
Why aren’t we threatening the Russians to back off in order to protect our Georgian friends? The Russians may be brutal but they’re not crazy and if they see that we are firm on them, they’ll back off.
Afghanistan has a population of 30 million.
Georgia has a population of 4 million.
The odds are in Moscow's favor.
Bush will have to handle this crisis while he is in Beijing.
Wonder what the Chinese think?
We need to stay out of this one for the obvious reasons. I’m not even sure that Russia is wrong here. We would be doing the same thing if Texas was taken over by a Mexican majority and was supressing an American minority in the Panhandle (at least I hope the USA will do something when that happens in about a decade).
That, and the Georgians are more civilized, probably don’t like fighting as much as the Afghans, and will likely first try negotiating or bribing the Russians to leave.
Timing is everything, isn't it?
What is America doing to help Georgia ?
We couldn’t defend ourselves with Democrats in charge,

“Why arent we threatening the Russians to back off in order to protect our Georgian friends? The Russians may be brutal but theyre not crazy and if they see that we are firm on them, theyll back off.”
Ain’t gonna happen.
i figured as much last night.
Something tells me Bush’s stay in Beijing will be shortened.
The Russians were defeated in Afghanistan by tactics, not merely by being outnumbered. That said, this is likely to be a more standard military conflict. The problem for Russia is that they are clearly in violation of Georgia’s sovereignty, so I don’t know how that’s going to fly.
Something tells me Bush’s stay in Beijing will be shortened.
bump de bump.
Since Putin is in China as well, there may be some agreement here.
Since the problem is most likely Islamic in nature, and probably Iranian backed...I don’t necessarily see this as a big deal.
Maybe I’m wrong and if somebody knows different I would appreciate the info.
Maybe we want the Russians to focus on Georgia while the Chinese are busy with the Olympics so we can sanction (blockade) Iran.
I got a feeling GW is getting a lot of calls on his phone right now.
Will be interesting when the ceremonies are shown tonight and see what his is doing.
Now more than ever he should call Congress back in session and return; because of this new military invasion, not to mention the energy crisis.
America is watching President Bush...
“Why arent we threatening the Russians . . .”
Two Russian planes shot down . . .
First off, MOVE, you're in occupied territory my FRiend!
Second, you really dont need that much concrete shielding. You'd be surprised how little reinforced concrete shielding you would actually need to protect you from radiation. Prolly about 6 inches but of course, that wont withstand the blast.
BTTT
And where’s the UN in all of this?
Another “statement” released, as predictable as the summer sun. Get the UN off US land.
Hey, anybody know where a guy can get six feet of concrete radiation shielding in a San Francisco on a Friday - quick?
I believe 1 “ thick solid layer of plain old polyethylene will do the trick for you instead of the concrete.
do you drink lots of milk?
Lurking’
This is Russia taking back Georgia.
The FSB (KGB) stirs up a revolt using Islamic seperatists, the Georgian’s respond and nmow the Russians kick in the door and take back a former Soviet Republic.
Actually, I figure this is about the safest place in the country. After all, all of their friends are here.
Truth be told, if things really started to get hairy I'd be up in Siskiyou County before the Republic of Jefferson could blow the passes over Mt. Shasta and establish border controls.

No but I also noticed you had no poly or duct tape, laugh if you will but I’d rather have it than not!

Relax, we’re not there yet.
Call Pelosi
Maybe it was planed this way
I would but she's out saving the planet.
South Ossetia seems to more in common with Russia than with Georgia. If the people there wish to be autonomous and aligned with Russia then what is that to us?
???
The Ossetians (the separatists in question) are Orthodox Christians. As are the Georgians fighting them.
There have been a few Islamists in Georgia, Chechens and Ingush who fled to the lawless Pankisi gorge after fighting the Russians, but far from being supported by Russia, Russia has actually invaded Georgia on several occasions with the excuse of trying to find and destroy them.
Agreed. Russia regards Georgia as being “treacherous”. Time to put them straight.
Nope...Russia has bombed a Georgian airbase outside of Tblisi and Georgia has shot down several russian jets. I guess the world is in for a demonstration of post Soviet, russian military capabilities.
Reuters:
PARTS OF RUSSIA’S 58TH ARMY ARE APPROACHING SOUTH OSSETIAN
CAPITAL, SENIOR MILITARY COMMANDER SAYS - RIA NEWS AGENCY
Georgias Army is technologically some centuries more advanced than the Mujahedin in Afghanistan were. However I doubt that the Georgians have the zeal of the Afghans... and probably no “big brother” like Saudi Arabia/Pakistan and the US were to the Afghans. I hope we don’t let our Georgian allies hang out to dry. Here is hoping that the Georgians shoot down more Russian planes and throw them out.
Are you kidding? Our “Mexican scenario” is the same situation Georgia is in, NOT Russia. For that matter the Serbs we fought were also in the situation the Georgians are in. If the Hispanics would secede we are in the situation the Georgians find themselve now.
Yikes.
