A military jury gave Osama bin Laden's driver a stunningly lenient sentence on Thursday, making him eligible for release in just five months despite the prosecutors' request for a sentence tough enough to frighten terrorists around the globe.

5 1/2 years = 66 months. SO HOW THE HELL COULD HE BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE IN 5 MONTHS, LESS THAN 10% OF THE TIME???!!!

That is how a justice system works. See the evidence, maybe really weak. They found him innocent of the more serious charges IIRC.

Looks like the Libtards put into the military by Clinton are still there.
Whatever happened to President Bush’s famous “If you support a terrorist, you are a terrorist.” position.

So what happens when his sentence is up? Does he get released to his home? Is that what we are going to do to enemy combatant prisoners? release them when the war is still in progress so they can return to their units? Does hew get his SAM’s back too?

Don’t worry. We’ll capture him in Afghanistan in 9 months, fighting against us. Then maybe we’ll do it right & not take him prisoner!

Sounds like they believe he is a low-level operative, not a mastermind terrorist.
They’ve heard the evidence. I haven’t. I’m content to trust their judgment. They are military officers, not the unemployed pulled out of a phone book.

Just want to understand, if he got a tough sentence the press would say it was all unfair, blah blah, but now he got leniency so it's some kind of failure blah blah. In fact articles I've seen are still trying to make it seem unfair and a failure both.
The media is major bs, this is what the tribunal decided. They are pros and that's it.

He will continue to be held as an enemy combatant, independent of this sentence. That’s why the ACLU and fellow wack jobs area calling it a “show trial”. They’re either stupid or willfully ignorant that he’s in custody for two independent reasons.

To: OnRightOnLeftCoast
I was expecting 10 years but there is a reason for this light sentence. This guys been in the can for 6 years, the military needs some low level terrorist to go home in guilt and tell his buddies that GITMO ain't worth visiting. The higher level terrorist will get bigger sentences and also be a deterrent.

The only thing the jury convicted Hamdan of was driving Osama and some munitions around. The jury decided he was just a low level employee. They did not convict him of the serious charges of conspiring with Al Queda.
This was the wrong prosecution to bring first. The world is watching and they should have tried someone at least moderately important.
The jury handed down the correct sentence.
To: OnRightOnLeftCoast
This demonstrates why you can’t treat terrorism as a law enforcement issue, as Clinton did, as Obama and the Democrats want to do.
It also demonstrates why we can’t afford to let Obama nominate the next SCOTUS judges. Don’t forget, it’s our SCOTUS was the one who gave the terrorists all kinds of rights, they should not be entitled to have.
It is not an exaggeration to say that if the Dems take control of the US — and if Obama wins, they will control the White House, Congress, AND shortly the Judicial Branch also — their policies will cost innocent lives, our innocent lives.

This shows what a disaster we see when terrorists are sent to the courts.
At the very least, he should be treated as a POW. Just leave him in a camp until all hostilities are ended. Sorry, but it is a 100 year war.
To: jagusafr
That’s good news. Why did they put him on trial. Didn’t his status merit summary execuion according to convention?

I've always thought that we should extract every bit of information from them by addicting them to heroin and then withholding it. When the info is provided and verified, liquidate them. They have no status as POW and summary execution is allowed by convention.

Maybe. I laugh how a few days ago the Left was throwing fits over the conviction.
It doesn't matter what the left thinks. Look at the evidence these military officers had to work with. This guy was a low level employee. Are we going to sentence Osama's cook and barber to death? They must have been trusted employees as well.
The negative reaction on this board is proof the Administration made another serious mistake trying Hamdan first. The charges they actually convicted him of were after thoughts.
To: 21stCenturyFreeThinker

Yes. Merely fighting out of uniform is grounds for summary execution on the battlefield, according to the Geneva Convention.
That’s logical, because it dissuades combatants from trying to pass themselves off as civilians, which puts civilians at risk.
