MSNBC's Witt: McCain's Use of the Tire-Gauge Issue 'Perpetuates the Problem'
newsbusters.org ^ | August 7, 2008 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 08/07/2008 1:14:03 PM PDT by Rufus2007

The media continue to have Obama's back after his ridiculous claim tire inflation could be a substitute for oil drilling in a speech at a rally in Missouri on July 30.

MSNBC anchor Alex Witt is the latest in a long line of media personalities expressing irritation that McCain is using the presumptive Democratic nominee's tire inflation comment in his campaign against Obama. Witt interviewed former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott on August 7 about McCain's strategy.

"But sir, when John McCain picks up this tire-gauge issue and you know - throws it about back and forth, doesn't he just perpetuate the problem?" Witt asked. "I mean, if you were advising him, wouldn't you say, ‘Can you leave it alone?' or does it work for him?"

I like Rush’s take on the tire gauge fiasco. The Dems say we can’t drill our way out of high gas prices but we can inflate our way out.

Obama is convinced that we can’t drill our way to energy independence, but he’s convinced we can “not” drill our way there.

But, as usual, he’s got it backwards. Drilling is exactly how we’ll get there, offshore California, offshore Alaska, onshore Alaska. Everything he opposes.

And nukes, and coal-to-diesel, and oil shale, let a thousand blossoms bloom. Again, all the things he opposes. He wants to replace OPEC with windmills, windfall taxes, and better-inflated tires. He doesn’t want to produce one more ounce of fuel, not here.

He’s carrying OPEC’s water, while pretending to be an idea-man.

Yep, if only we inflated tires properly everyday, there will be no energy crisis... With fuel economy up to 3%, prices would never rose above $1.50 per gallon.

Gas tax holiday, which Obama called “a gimmick”, saves more...

Obama must think that if he inflates his ego even more, he would definitely be elected President.

Here’s a different take on the pneumatic math.

A single car with very low tire pressure can get up to a 3% increase in fuel economy with properly inflated tires.

The OBAMAeconomists applied the 3% number to current total US fuel consumption and, voila! Their fallacy argument to being able to conserve as much as new drilling would produce.

Gawd help us if this kind of mental power is added to the already doofus thinking we now have in govt.

McCain should enable grassroots organizers to have “Inflate Your Tires” campaign fundraisers. Drive up and donate five bucks and get all your tires checked for air pressure and reinflated or repaired as necessary.

Taking sensible actions to conserve energy are reasonable, but with a growing economy you expect energy consumption continue to rise over time. At some point you have to increase energy supply. Obama just doesn’t want to acknowledge this reality.

True If your tires are already properly inflated, Over inflating them becomes dangerous and less efficient, as less tire meets the road, handling becomes an issue, and MPG can actually decrease. Obama is trying to say he's being mocked for conservation measures. He's being mocked because he claimed these measures would replace the need to drill for more oil. This is a losing issue for him, cuz only the most stupid will buy his rhetoric...and he's already locked up the “stupid” vote. If McCain and the GOP just keep hammering Obama and the Dems on energy; The fall won't be as dismal for them as expected. Of course the down side for the rest of us is the country will still be run by Democrats and Republicans, no matter who wins.

According to this government website:

You can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.4 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

For that 3 to 4 percent savings to be realized, the average driver would have to be carrying 8 to 10 psi under the recommended pressure on each tire.

For Obama's savings to be realized, the average tires, which require, for example, 32 psi, are now carrying only 22 to 24 psi. Tires that are underinflated to that degree would appear to be soft and flat to the naked eye. Most people are already more careful than that.

I seem to recall that the word "ignorant" was a favorite of Michael Jackson's too. Obama assumes that all Americans are idiots who don't know how to take care of themselves even in the smallest things. So, yes, he assumes that you and everybody you know is too stupid to inflate your own tires without somebody from the government telling you to do so.

You are also to stupid to eat right, excesize, handle your own medical insurance, arrange for your own retirement, raise your own kids, sign a mortgage, read a Bible or handle a gun. But you already knew they thought that of you, right?

Even if the pneumatic math were, you pnow, correct — the conclusions would still be way, way off.

Transportation only accounts for about 1/3 of energy consumption — so, the most that could be saved drops to 1%.

Of total fuel used in transportation — only about 4/5 is used for road transport. The potential savings drop to 0.8%.

About 1/3 of the fuel used for road transport is used by commercial shipping companies — where tire pressures are check routinely. The potential savings drops to 0.5%.

At least 1/4 of private vehicles already had properly inflated tires. (New vehicles come with properly inflated tires — garages check them, whenever they do maintenance work & some people actually already knew how to use a tire gauge.) The potential savings drops to 0.4%.

Inflating tire pressures is a MINOR part of conservation.

Conservation is a MINOR part of the overall energy solution.

More oil quantity and/or less demand is the only thing that will diminish prices at the pump.

Obama’s dogged clinging to his tire inflation gaffe shows his total unwillingness to admit a mistake. I’m starting to believe his superhuman arrogance is going to blow up in his face before election day.

We're getting a pretty good look this week at how the MSM rallies around Obama to defend the shallowness of his energy policy, all-the-king's-horses-and-all-the-king's-men style. At the same time the media is nowhere to be found regarding the troubling, and rather compelling, evidence of John Edwards mistress and love child.

The MSM's sandbagging operation won't work. The dam is about to give way.

Here is what these oh so smart people don’t realize and that is they are not only making themselves look stupid but exacerbating Obama’s association with being upset over tire gauges and suggesting it as an energy solution. Obama’s quote was silly. He suggested you could save just as much as we could save being energy independent by keeping our tires inflated and having regular tune ups something which he should know is silly. Inflating tires is a good idea as are tune ups but you aren’t going to save but a small fraction of the increased cost of gasoline due to energy dependence.
