GOP rolls into Day 4 of gas-price revolt, Gingrich makes appearance
Politico - the Crypt ^ | Aug 6, 2008 | John Bresnahan

House Republicans have begun Day 4 in their "Shadow Session" on gas prices, and former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is with them.

Rep. Adam Putnam (Fla.), chairman of the House Republican Conference, is with them today, making him the highest-ranking GOP leader to show up so far. Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is expected later this afternoon, and Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will probably be here on Friday.

There are some new faces among the 18 GOP members taking part in Wednesday's unofficial session, including Reps. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), Judy Biggert (R-Ill.), David Davis (R-Tenn.), John Doolittle (R-Calif.), Ralph Hall (R-Texas), Patrick McHenry (R-N.Y.), Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), and Christopher Shays (R-Conn.).

Aside from the obvious need for action, maybe this is a gambit by the GOP congressional delegation to band together for the election. I don’t think that they can expect much help from McCain.

Isn’t Newt for higher gas prices? Won’t that help slow global warming? I mean, Newt wants to save the planet from global warming doesn’t he? It’s one of the few things he and Nancy can agree on!

I noticed that there has been no additions to her promo of the "book" tour. It is now going to be out of date as of tomorrow...

Logically if we listen to Oblahma all we have to do is drill more and inflate our tires. Gas will be back to a buck and a quarter a gallon.

Good to see my man David Davis there. He’s standing with the reps while a sleazy Dr.Phil Roe is spreading lies about him and demagoguing back here in E.TN. trying to bump him from the republican nomination. Roe is a ‘pragmatic’ politician ... he’ll tell any lie and say anything he thinks will get him a vote, truth and honesty be damned!

You fumbled this one badly, Nancy. I hope you are choking on it.

She's too busy on her book tour, signing books for adoring fans...the real reason she shut of the lights.

Also, Marxists like her don't recognize mistakes on their part - only the stupid little people who are too ignorant to understand how right she and her Komrads are.

Besides, she's got to stand tough. After all, she has a planet to save - well, after her book tour.,

BTW, has anyone confirmed her mode of transportation back to Calif? Did she take the Jumbo jet she has heretofore commanded be made available at her disposal?

It would make a great ad:

Nancy shutting of the lights and cameras, rushing off to the waiting Jumbo jet, with a "little people" at a gas station, watching it take off as they fill from a $4.00 pump, off the Calif and immediately out on her book tour - than a shot of Marie Antoinette with sub title: "Let them eat cake."

I wish the McC ad guys would do it

How is Nancy getting around the country for her book signings? Is she using SUV from airports to book stores? Is she using her own or dnc private plane or is she using the government plane assigned to her? Is she using an Air Force crew to fly her around? Is she buying the gas?

Not only the present GOP members in the house, but every GOP candidate running against a Democrat incumbent now in office, should show up for this “shadow Congress”, and a copious number of videos made in low-light conditions should be prepared of the various speeches made by the GOP incumbents and the GOP challengers, for consumption in the local Congressional races back home. On the scale of costs spent on various campaign, this may turn out to be pretty cost-effective.

And tie floor of the US House of Representatives IS the People’s House.

All good until your last line ... Marie Antoinette never said that. (It appeared in a book by Rousseau in 1767, a few years before Antoinette even came to France.)

If they really want to get series about winning back the House and Senate, all GOP congressmen and senators need to be on Capital Hill, calling for the dems to return, or calling for the President to order them all back.

I sent my question in.

For someone who is out there promoting a “Ms.”-type book, she’s setting women back 30 years by her hissyfit policy stances. Give a woman (like that) a little power and she’s out there without a net.

DY,

Yes call them back.

On Cavuto yesterday he grilled some Dorky Dem from NY, thank G-D I no longer watch this stuff regularly this weasel was about to make my head explode.

But Cavuto said Pelosi has instructed them to vote for drilling (quitely) and you should should have heard the propoganda.

My guess is the DNC has the internals and they know like a steak left to long on the grill are well done on this issue.

I have posted before in detail, the answers for energy independence are at hand in 10 years IMHO yet, the Dems block, obfuscate, to what benefit?

TO quell their environmental lobby, to crush the economy for their gain this fall either way, they are trying to destroy the GOP and the Country, in the quest of power.

Let us play a what if... Let us say, technological breakthroughs may be at hand, could this be what they are waiting for? I doubt it, they are to stupid to know implementation may take a while, and in the mean time we still need oil and other fossil fuels.

But the bottom line is, this will be solved by the private sector, not some Congressmen or Senator (or Presidential Candidate) that does not understand the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, let alone spell it, but in order to do so, they need to get out of they way....

I see an opportunity for the GOP to use Energy as a keystone solution to counter many Dem issues. Here are the announcements I’d like to see and why:

1) By 2010, every new vehicle in America must use less than ONE gallon of gasoline or diesel per 50 miles driven. By 2010, every station that sells gasoline must also sell M85.

2) We will open up drilling and oil from shale and methanol-from-coal production with the goal of not just reducing imports of oil, but actually becoming a major exporter.

3) Have a goal of 50% electric production from nuclear plants by 2020.

Why and how ?

The 50mpg OF GASOLINE requirement means it can be met by Detroit at a cost of only $100 per vehicle if every vehicle is built as flex-fuel — it won’t matter if it only gets 15mpg of FUEL. The fraction that is gasoline or diesel will be so small that less than a gallon of those petroleum products will be used to cover 50 miles. This will be MUCH less expensive for automakers to implement than CAFE standards trying to eek 35mpg from gasoline alone or gasoline-electric hybrids.

We have lots of coal. Methanol from coal costs 50 cents a gallon to produce, which is $1 gallon in energy equivalence to gasoline. Announcing such a commitment to the future will drop the price of oil like a rock. It may fall so far that the government may even need to guarantee a price of $30/barrel to get the oil companies to invest in the infrastructure required. If market price for oil falls below that level the US producer will be able to collect the difference from the government.

The goal of becoming a major oil exporter will do two things — increase world supply so energy remains cheap worldwide, and bring home US dollars by reversing the trade deficit. It would be one way to get back some of those dollars stuck in China, Japan, and Europe, none of whom have the oil shale like we have.

Making energy cheap by increasing the supply is how America can fight world poverty, not by giveaway programs like the Global Poverty Act Obama is pushing, which history has shown just builds palaces for dictators and doesn’t actually help the poor.

Reducing our own use of oil even as we move to cleaner methanol and electrics should satisfy the greenies, while selling it to other less developed parts of the world can bring in US revenue via the royalties and income taxes paid by the oil companies. To go electric, we’ll need the additional power from nuke plants which can generate electricity for an amortized cost of under 5cents/kwh. At that price, all-electric mid-size vehicles which get about 2 miles per kwh will be equivalent on a cost-per-mile basis to 75 cent/gal gasoline.

That would be half the price of gasoline or M85 even if oil was down to $30. So there will still be the incentive to move away from gasoline and even methanol in the long-term, making the Global Warming Alarmists happy, right ?
