GOP: Lift drilling ban or risk shutdown
The Washington Times ^ | August 4, 2008 | Sean Lengell

The showdown on Capitol Hill over expanding offshore drilling could lead to a threatened government shutdown when Congress returns from its five-week summer break in early September.

Some Republicans say they are prepared to vote against a resolution to fund the federal government for the 2009 fiscal year unless Democrats agree to lift an offshore drilling moratorium.

About time the Republicans got some onions. The Dems are out of touch with the American people this issue and should be held accountable for doing nothing if not causing high gasoline prices.

The Republicans should have lifted the Offshore Drilling Ban sometime between 2001 and 2007 when they controlled the White House, the Senate and the House.

However, they failed to do so when they had the chance.

DO IT! Give the government slouches a vacation right before Christmas time since the government runs out of money on Oct 1 without at least a continuing resolution.

If they did this it would cause pandemonium in the DBM/dem world! Could you imagine the hissy fit liberals would throw? This is the kind of GOP I expect. It's come to the point republicans either DO somthing or become total abject failures. It looks as though they are starting to get a clue.

The American people will back you if you just fight for what is right.

Go for it Republicans!

The difference in 1995 and now is that now the GOP has nothing to lose because they get blamed for anything anyway.

Because you had stupid "moderate" Republicans dragging the party down.

They have correctly recognized that they’re on their own.

The White House is in “Legacy Building Mode” and will do nothing except that.

I hope that the Republicans in Congress have the fortitude and stamina for the long haul.

I heard on Levin’s show today something about the offshore drilling moratorium is not an ongoing certainty. I gathered it has to be voted? on every so often?

Did anyone hear that? He said he had not known about that before today.

It must be renewed every year. However, this year the Democrats are expected to include a one-year extension in legislation that they will introduce next month to continue funding the government for the 2009 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. So, in other words, they don’t have the cojones to introduce and pass a bill seperately, but have to attach it to the budget.

"Some Republicans say they are prepared to vote against a resolution to fund the federal government for the 2009 fiscal year..."

ALL Republicans aren't enough to stop passage, so SOME Republicans voting against the resolution means nothing.

Actually the magic number is 40 Republican Senators. The real question is can MCConnal(sic) sustain a filibuster of the budget in the senate in the face of the pressure all left leaning groups can bring to bear.

Not certain, but I don’t believe budget bills can be filibustered in the Senate. It’s some Republican members of the House who are threatening this as far as I understand what I’ve read.
