Democrats anxious for Obama to widen lead
Financial times ^ | August 1 2008 | Edward Luce

Posted on 08/02/2008 12:59:58 PM PDT by edzo4

With just one month to go before Labour Day many Democrats fear that time is running out for Mr Obama to overcome the suspicions of this key swing vote.

“We have got to move away from these beautifully choreographed speeches which appeal to groups of voters who are unassailably in the Obama camp already,” said a non-staff adviser to Mr Obama. “What plays well with the educated liberal voter sometimes grates with the blue-collar folk, whom we need on our side if we are going to win.”

At this stage in the 1988 presidential race, Michael Dukakis, the Democratic candidate, had a 17 percentage point lead over George H.W. Bush, who went on to win the election. John Kerry emerged from the 2004 Democratic convention with a strong lead over George W. Bush only to lose the election as well.

That only reinforces disquiet about Mr Obama’s inability so far to take a decisive lead. “Even on his worst day, Bill Clinton was able to signal that he understood voters’ concerns and that he felt their pain,” said Douglas Schoen, a Democratic consultant. “Obama has no trouble with the campaign stagecraft. But this isn’t Harvard, it’s the beer hall. He has to talk in language that people understand.”

Conventional wisdom also suggests Mr McCain’s campaign overstepped the mark by moving on to direct negative attacks on Mr Obama’s character. But Mr Obama has also kept up a stream of material for them to exploit. At a meeting with Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday, he said he represented the world’s hopes for America. “This is the moment the world is waiting for,” he said when asked about his overseas trip. “I have become a symbol of restoring America to its best traditions.”

Well, they put up with Bill Clinton, and they didn’t like his politics. Apparently, they can get used to things.

The Obomination scares ANYONE with ANY SENSE!

The more they get to know the OBOMINATION, the more frightened they are of him and it has NOTHING to do with RACE.

McPain - point out an ad on that!

It's not his “funny name”, or his “race” that scares the hell out of people. It's his POLICIES that leave people petrified.

Another elitist statement coming out of the Obama camp.

When I sit back, take a few moments, and really think about it, I just can’t see the American voter putting this guy in the WH. The only way Obama is going to win is if he continues veering towards the center and snookers enough of the sheeple that he really isn’t a hard-core radical Marxist.

That’s why Rush, Hannity and all the rest have to keep hammering away and keep reminding everyone that, in fact, he is a far-left, radical.

Which only goes to show that Dems need to see a huge "fluff factor" in their polling numbers due to the fact that they already know most of the inflated numbers are in fact, just 'fluff'

“This is the moment the world is waiting for,” he said when asked about his overseas trip. “I have become a symbol of restoring America to its best traditions.”

All caught up in his own flower and pomp, Obama is exactly what he describes himself as: A Symbol ... nothing more, nothing less

I agree.

Also no matter what liberals claim - they are RACISTS at heart. A white liberal will hesitate to vote for the Obomination. I believe “fabricated “white guilt” will stop when it comes time to chose. He can’t win on just the black vote.

excuse me, but the blue collar folks are the ones that 'THE MESSIAH' said were clinging to their GUNS and Bibles.

Isn't educated Liberal an oxymoron? if you are really EDUCATED -- you wouldn't be a LIBERAL!!!

Democrats are always putting the cart before the horse. You actually need to have a lead before you can widen it.

Or put more bluntly, we need to have Obama lie sometimes so we can trick the blue-collar democrats into voting for him.

Liberals are running scared because with all the advantages Democrats have, Obama should be up 20 points. Instead, he's running well behind but they don't want to admit it, so they comfort themselves with saying its a dead heat and he has a small lead when all the "leaners" are counted. But I don't quite think in their heart they believe its true.

ABSOLUTELY! My exact thoughts as I read it. So now I guess we’ll see BO touring some middle-America county fairs, judging pie-eating contests and the like. Will he shoot at clay pigeons with “the folks?” Wouldn’t that be fun to watch?

I concur. Polls for the last thirty years have tended to overstate the Democrat candidate’s actual standing. In all probability, Dukakis never really had a 17 point lead. At best, he probably led by 8-9 points. Usually by the time of an election, poll numbers are adjusted back to reality.

“...Dukakis never really had a 17 point lead. At best, he probably led by 8-9 points....”

....and he LOST! There is gonna be a huge degree of buyers remorse come October.

My gut tells me Hillary is working the in background to see to it he doesn’t win. Then in 2012 she can say, “See, I told you so. He was not electable”. She’d be sure to get the nod as the dem candidate then.

And the American voter has become driven by fear.

We also find that tendency in nature. They call them Lemmings. And they gladly follow each other over a cliff to their death without a second thought.

Obamba is more like “the wiener the world awaited”

Beer hall unedumacated could dig that.
