Obama's Very Bad Week
Townhall.com ^ | Townhall.com | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 08/01/2008 10:33:45 PM PDT by Kaslin

The blast-off didn't materialize, and the Dalibama found his numbers falling in Ohio, Pennsylvania an Florida. Even worse, the late night comics were having a field day with his "inflate your tires, end the energy crisis" pronouncement.

Michelle Obama returned to the political lists, and is her habit, she portrayed a grim America the outlines of which just don't register with most voters, even among many of the single moms and working mothers she was appealing to. Mrs. Obama told a crowd she didn't want Obama to run, but then changed her mind:

But then I had to take a step back and take off my "Me" mommy hat, and put on my "Us" mommy hat. And I started thinking about the kind of world that I would want to hand over to my daughters. I had to think long and hard about wanting them to be able to dream of anything for themselves, you know, wanting them to be able to imagine any kind of future for themselves, and know that they would have the kind of support from this country that would allow them and all of our children to achieve those dreams. And then I realized that if that's the kind of world that I wanted for my girls, then I had to do everything in my power, make every sacrifice, to make it possible. So that's why I'm a woman for Obama. That is why.

No imagining "any kind of a future" without Obama? Barack's not the only one with some ego on display this week.

With the pressure on Obama did what he has done before --he played the race card, asserting that John McCain would try and scare voters because of Obama's name, his insufficient patriotism, and because Obama doesn't look the presidents on the dollar bills. Put aside the gaffe about presidents being on dollar bills --just another in a long string from Mr. 57 States-- and note that this is the second time in recent weeks when Obama reflexively played a race card. At a Florida fund-raiser in June, Obama said this:

“The choice is clear. Most of all we can choose between hope and fear. It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy. We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid. They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?"

John McCain pushed back, hard, as he should and hopefully will again and again. There have been lots of occasions over the years to disagree with Senator McCain, but no one has ever before accused him or running a dishonorable, racist campaign, and his anger is genuine. The accusation of racism is a slander, and McCain won't put up with it, nor will most voters. Obama's sensitivity to being compared with light weights Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton --"fame without portfolio" is how McCain surrogate Lindsey Graham put it in noting the tie that binds the trio-- led him to throw down the race card, an unforced error on his part, worse even than the demonstration of empty-suitedness with his "inflate your tires to energy freedom" baffler.

McCain won the week, or rather Obama lost it. Even the MSM began to notice the "all hat, no cattle" aspect of Obama's campaign, asking "What has he ever done? What does he propose to do, specifically?"

And as a backdrop to it all, an emerging an undeniable victory in Iraq that, had Obama had his way, would not only have been prevented but which would have seen genocide in its place.

Obama doesn't understand the war, and increasingly seems not to understand the American voter. The former is the most important issue and Obama cannot bring himself to admit and celebrate the unfolding victory, and the latter doesn't live in Germany, and deeply resents unfair accusations of racism.

The main problem is Obama is the Seinfeld candidate. You can see in him whatever you want. Ultimately when you stand for nothing, voters can see there's no there there.

...and now he is reversing himself again and saying he will consider drilling off coast.

President Bush should absolutely sieze on this and take the initiative and immediately call an emergency session of congress and tell them to end the congressional ban on drilling, particularly now that BOTH Presidential candidates are saying we need to do it.

Either Pelosi will split with Obama on it causing him to fight her or reverse himself again, or they may actually, due to the increasing pressure, pass something.

If they did, then McCain and the GOP reps immediately take credit and point out to the American public how Pelosi and Obama had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the table by the GOP to do what the American people demand and need.

You can bet there are some Hillary democrats out there saying “I told you so”.

Wave something shiny in front of liberals, they will chase it right out into the street.

Make no mistake though, we must fight Obama like he is 20 points ahead at all times.

Jeff, I respect you greatly. You are doing an immensely important job in continually reminding people what Obama really is all about. However, you kind of flubbed this one. Presidents can't tell Congress to do anything. Presidents can only propose. Congress is a separate and equal branch of our government. We have no dictators in this country (although I'm sure Obama has dictatorial intentions if he does get his ass elected).

I agree.

In fact, I think that statement potentially could be more damaging than anything else we’ve seen in the campaign so far. Not only is it patently absurd, it also has a “let them eat cake” ring to it.

Maybe McCain should spend less time comparing Obama to Paris and Brittney and more to Marie Antoinette, eh?

Really? The RealClear website shows the polls rebounding this week in Ohio and PA, and flat in FL at +2 for Obama after a McCain poll of +8 on 06/27 - 06/29. McCain's average in all 3 states has lost ground this week.

Of the myriad requisites to be the Democrat nominee for President, two especially stand out.

First is the inevitable messianic stature of the candidate ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThFvlybQYso ). The Dem will be the savior of all mankind if not the heavens and the Earth.

Second, he must be consistently vocal about how ashamed he is of America—past, present and future (if he’s not the one elected). As oxymoronic as it seems, he will proudly boast of how un-proud he is of our history, our current policies and our direction.

No shame of the U.S.—no Dem nomination.

The difference between me and liberals--all my life, when trying to achieve my dreams, I never ONCE wondered "What kind of support am I getting from my country to allow me to achieve my dreams?"

No wonder Michelle O has never been proud of her country--she feels love is a government-sponsored ATM machine that never runs out, and doesn't have a security code.

We certainly do.

One is named Pelosi, one Reid.

When ONE person can decide what will and will not even get a vote...when ONE can stand and say they will NOT ALLOW a bill to be voted on, like the bill for Drilling - and say, pontifically: "I'm trying to save the planet! I'm trying to save the planet" = when one person can turn off the lights and the cameras in the Senate Chamber, in the face of other members - Who is that but a dictator?

Wolfstar - I’m not sure about that. I heard Mark Levin talking to Mike Pence (R-IN) today about their actions in the House today (in the dark!) and Levin was saying that Bush should order the Congress to get back in session and work until they had arrived at a solution to the energy crisis.

I found this information. What do you think?
http://www.c-span.org/questions/weekly67.asp

If President Bush could call them back from vacation to convene (but he can’t force them to act) I think he should. The American people would love it.

I must say, though, that calling the Dems back from their vacations to convene would be in-convenient for them, huh?

He can't force them to act but he can call an emergency session and he is the one who tells them when to adjourn if he calls the session, it is all in the Constitution clear as a bell. That is what the republicans today are trying to force, the president to call back the house and hold them there until they vote, one way or the other. Perfectly legal and has been done at least once in the past.

When you overinflate your tires you run a safety risk, especially on wet roads. Also, overinflating your tires increases the diameter of the tires, thereby causing your speedometer to indicate a speed that is lower than the speed you are actually traveling. In other words, Obama’s advice will cause everybody who follows it to inadvertantly drive faster, thereby burning more fuel on the highway.

As if being a crack-smoking homosexual isn’t enough, Obama is also an idiot.

Article. II. - The Executive Branch, Section 3 - State of the Union, Convening Congress

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

YOu are correct in that the President can not tell Congress to do anything. He can however go on T.V. and politely ask Congress to please come back into session to tackle energy needs including drilling.
He could appeal directly to Pelosi and Reid to do this and then when they refuse the Republicans have one highly visible issue to hammer dems with.

I was hoping someone would point that out. It’s not a dictatorship to “convene”. The president may be a figurehead in most people’s minds, but he is in fact the leader of this nation with special powers and privledges that allow him to carry out his duties and responsibilities to this nation. Whether or not he will though is another question entirely... Afterall he did allow two Border Patrol officers to be jailed for carrying out their duties when he had the power and responsibility to pardon them of that farce of a conviction. So I really doubt Bush will do what “should” be done here.
