NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday it has held meetings with U.S. store managers warning them of issues that could arise if Democrats win power and pass a law that would make it easier for workers to unionize, but stressed it was not telling workers how to vote.
Wal-Mart opposes proposed legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make it easier for workers to unionize by signing a card rather than holding a vote.
"We believe EFCA is a bad bill and we have been on record as opposing it for some time," Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said. "We feel educating our associates about the bill is the right thing to do."
The Wall Street Journal reported that about a dozen employees who attended meetings in seven states said executives told them employees would be required to pay hefty union dues and get nothing in return, and warned that unionization could force Wal-Mart to cut jobs as labor costs rise.

Good on Walmart!
I keep a household budget. It shows I spent $426.22 at Wally World last month. Up from $288.15 in June.
Walmart is now reaping what they’ve been sowing.
Look at the increase of support to dems..
they walk away from buy american
they have huge investments in china
oops

That won’t be a popular observation here at FR. But I agree. WalMart can’t eliminate the costs of their domestic work force, so they are over a barrel now.
I’m a big Sam’s Club person too.
Love their meat and I only have to go grocery shopping once a month!
(and I paid 3.69 for gas when the corner station was 3.79 cash only)
Dittos on Sam’s Gas. Lucky for me they are a mile away from my home.
I say lucky. I just added up my Sam’s expenses. $976.18 for July.
Yikes! I gotta quit spending!!!!

I still shop at wally world and sams... but they have strayed from what made them a powerhouse.
But the fact that they now contribute nearly 48% of their pac money to dems shows how their short sighted they have become.
The Chicoms & the Waltons appreciate your business. LOL
Next time you're there, say hello to all the illegals working at Mao-Mart who receive Food Stamps so they afford to buy groceries where they work. Food Stamps, free education and housing assistance that illegals receive and benefits that I and the rest of American taxpayers pay for because the Waltons are too damn cheap to hire Americans and pay them the going wages. And before any of you geniuses accuse me of being some sort of "union scum": I own my own business, thank you. And I have NEVER hired anyone but American citizens. AMERICANS WORK WHEN YOU BUY AMERICAN GOODS!
Translation: the Act would eliminate the secret ballot, exposing anti-union employees to intimidation and later reprisals.
>>I just added up my Sams expenses. $976.18 for July.<<
Wow!
The other day, I stopped into Sam’s because I wanted Steak. Real steak and we don’t get it that often. I ended up spending 100.00.
The cashier told me, DON”T get a cart. If you are stopping in, just carry what you need. It stops impulse buying (like the huge pack of Sharpie fine points in a rainbow of colors!)
Same here. Part of my problem is that I’m an accountant at heart so while I usually can resist the temptation to shop, I’ll see a 26 pack of the disposable razors I usually buy that works out to .75 a razor when in the regular Walmart it’s over $1 per razor. Can’t pass those type of bulk buys up. lol
Good for Wal-Mart. I hope everyone sends them some love. Wal-Mart pays very competitive wages for a Department store. They are also one of our biggest customers. The thing that employees don’t always realize that with unionization or even artificially propped up minimum wages the one thing that is sure to happen is that the stores can not employee as many people to run them so existing employees end up picking up the slack for what is still a fairly low wage and then they end up paying more with their meager paychecks at the department stores that employ them for the same goods and services.
Wal-mart has been receiving a lot of flack with goods from China crap and other silly canards. I’d like someone to tell me one department store that doesn’t buy goods from China. Also people soon forget many small businesses buy raw goods for resell from Asia in general and resell to Wal-Mart. I imagine that a small fraction of Wal-Mart goods are direct buy from China. Democrats are playing a shell game trying to deflect from their impotence and that of unions in general.
I’ve never needed to be a member of a union and I’m offended by those who oppose right to work laws. I also believe that the federal and state government would run better if unions were banned entirely. I hear all the time people saying they are taking a government job to have more time with their family. When you hear that you know damn hell they aren’t going into the military. I think they should step up to the plate and honor the military by refusing benefits above those provided to the military. I’m sure state and federal budgets would shrink dramatically.
I know people that work at both our Walmart and Sam’s. They don’t have to hire illegals (and don’t according to those I know there). This is MI. Many of us are unemployed and need work.
It’s nice that you own your own business, God Bless you! But basically, I have to feed my family. We shop there because it’s good, it’s inexpensive and it sells produce and meat from MI.
I see it ‘s not just me! It’s amazing what you can end up walking out of there with.
The last few pairs of jeans I bought from Walmart, were made in Israel.
The same people who complain about Walmart will hit the Dollar Store in a heartbeat, smiling about how they are supporting “small business”.
Guess where those goods come from?
And the next time you’re there add an extra 50% of what you pay to Walmart to entice them to buy American goods and not Chinese goods from now on.
If you’re fine with paying $24.00 for an American made shirt verses $7.99 for a Chinese made one, then don’t let me get in your way.
Oh you bet!
And DON’T take the kids along!!!
LOL! My wife would rather take the kids than me.
My hubby would slash his wrists rather than going to Sam’s Club! Best Buy is in the same plaza. He goes there (which is scarier!!)
I think that they had to pay the extortion money to keep the democRATS agitator base off of them.
“Hi, I’m your union organizer. I’ve filled out and filed all of your cards approving unionization. If you wanted to vote the other way, just ask my associates Bruiser and Thug in the back room for a blank card...”
$976.18 is an awful lot, but to break it down...
$287.61 was for gas alone. Sam’s is usually a nickel cheaper per gallon - some a dime - than the Exxon next door.
$321.41 was for a GPS. I looked and looked. Sam’s had exactly what I wanted. And it was $100.00 cheaper than Best Buy and Circuit City.
Your spending looks quite reasonable.
I would not want to add up what I spend at Walmart. And ours doesn’t have food!
(sarc) You mean Union thugs intimidate people, like busting the windows of your car. (sarc off/)
Do you live in LA? If so your sentiment is understandable. There are so many immigrants illegal and otherwise that you can’t tell who is legal or not. When I go to Virginia Wal-Marts in my area they pay a going wage that a single person could afford to find a meager apartment with. The wages though are not monolithic and tend to vary from area to area. As for Wal-Mart buying Chinese goods, who doesn’t? My sister works at Wal-Mart in West Virginia and makes well above minimum wage. My wife did a short stint at Wal-Mart and they paid her almost $10 an hour.
Really what do you expect from a department store or restaurant? It is not a career unless you intend to be management and if you are content to work as a cashier all your life then don’t worry be happy and enjoy being poor because that is life. You don’t get high pay for low skilled labor. I’ve worked for less than minimum wage before when I started out in door to door sales I didn’t like it and then I tried minimum wage and the 5 and 10 cent wage increases sucked so I went back to school finished a degree and started a real career. That is how the world works. As for all those single Moms everyone talks about. Hippies used to be told to get a hair cut and get a real job. Single Moms I think they should told “Keep their legs shut and get a real husband” then maybe like my wife they wouldn’t have to work in a Chinese trading post for low wages.
Walmart basher alert!!
Yes they do get violent. A buddy of mine was beat up for expressing his views. He was right and they lost the contract to build helicopters and most lost their jobs but they were united. I’m sure their union leadership are millionaires now. I’d like to see an analysis of Union leadership finances. I’m sure it would be revealing. It would even be better if their salaries were analyzed based upon growth of union membership. lol
Last time I checked Toyota are built in Tennessee. Democrats win when you buy union goods or send your kids to union schools.
>>Last time I checked Toyota are built in Tennessee. Democrats win when you buy union goods or send your kids to union schools.<<
Shhhhh. Don’t mess them up with facts. They’re on a roll.
I really want a Christmas job at Walmart.
Translation: the Act would eliminate the secret ballot, exposing anti-union employees to intimidation and later reprisals.
Bingo! The author of this piece obviously believes all union reps are kind and warm hearted. The legislation reminds me of voting practices in third-world countries, such as Zimbabwe. If the unions can't win by secret ballot, they'll win by cutting the tires of anyone who disagrees.
(By the way, on DU the unions can do no wrong. You should have seen the cheering when they shut down public transportation via strike in NYC around Christmas, when there was snow on the ground. Said it was okay for senior citzen women to walk in the cold as long as it supports their "brothers.")
Unions have been losing such votes recently, so it doesn't surprise me they'd want this type of law enacted. That way, they can at least get union dues from those who are willing to sign a card. These individuals will pay dues but get nothing of substance from the union.
Not sure what you are refering to here. Are you refering to all American voters or only WalMart employees?
So if 50% sign de- certification cards, does that mean they’ve had enough of said union?
I’m betting this is another one way union piece of s**t bill just like the manditory member crap we have now.
Even if they were supporting my guy, if my employer EVER tried to influence who I vote for, I’d tell them to go f$%& themselves. Totally inappropriate.
Good on Walmart!
I keep a household budget. It shows I spent $426.22 at Wally World last month. Up from $288.15 in June.”
As a bookkeeper, I must caution that unless you bought exactly the same items in June as you did in July, these comparisons are meaningless.
Over a year’s time, with the cycles of running out of staples like spices, TP, vitamins, etc., then you can have more meaningful calculations.
The best comparisons are the prices of Wal-Mart to the drug store and grocery store and beauty store chains. I use Pantene shampoo. The last time I bought the large bottle, it cost me $4.67 at Wal-Mart and ranged as high as $7.89 at the other stores. I cannot justify spending over a dollar more per roll for paper towels at the grocery store on a fixed income.
Unions cost employees much more than they realize. They will be forced to pay union dues and they will have no idea where the money is spent. Support for political agendas which you don’t agree with come from union dues. There will definately be layoffs, and when the union decides to call a strike, even your votes might not count.
I belonged to 5 unions in my younger years, and membership was mandatory. We once had a union meeting to vote on a strike. I talked to enough members to be assured that they had voted against the strike. The union announced exactly the opposite, and it cost us employees over 7 weeks of income. Strike fund to support us didn’t exist.
I say lucky. I just added up my Sams expenses. $976.18 for July.”
That is almost my entire monthly income.
Hi, Im your union organizer. Ive filled out and filed all of your cards approving unionization. If you wanted to vote the other way, just ask my associates Bruiser and Thug in the back room for a blank card...”
Exactly.
Votes need to be private and secret.

I have never forgotten being a mamber of the Teamster’s Union- mandatory for job- and getting charged an extra $1 a month in dues to pay for Jimmy Hoffa’s legal bills.
Hoffa was being tried for stealing OUR pensions funds.
Alot like paying your husband’s divorce lawyer when you just got screwed over.
I will never forget that event, and I hate unions.
Last time I checked Toyota are built in Tennessee”
I thought Toyota plant was non-union. What is the fact?
I was vocal against a former employer going union. The windows got busted out of my car. A group of us did repay the local union chief car later on. ;)
