SIOUX FALLS, SD (LifeSiteNews) - On Monday, July 21, eight women arrived at the Planned Parenthood office in Sioux Falls in South Dakota for abortions, but were instead met with locked doors and a hand-written note indicating the only abortion clinic in South Dakota was closed.
Planned Parenthood closed its doors after their abortionists, who are flown in from other states, refused to work under the new law that went into effect last Friday.
The law orders abortionists to inform patients of the humanity of their babies and that the procedure could affect their mental health two hours before the abortion is set to be performed.
The law also provides that abortionists can be sued if they do not comply.
This law was the brain-child of attorney Harold Cassidy and passed with the help of determined pro-life leaders Dr. Alan and Leslee Unruh, who pushed for the regulation in the face of opposition, even from some in the pro-life movement. The Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals cleared the way for the law's enactment last week.
It remains unclear if the Planned Parenthood office has permanently ceased the practice of abortion. However, several women who were scheduled for abortions this week went to a pro-life center instead, where some have reportedly changed their minds about having abortions.
"The closing of this clinic is historic in that South Dakota is, for the time being, the first abortion-free state," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.
"It didn't take the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and it didn't take a new President or a new Supreme Court. It took the courageous determination of pro-life heroes like Mr. Cassidy and the Unruhs who saw an opportunity to save lives and pressed on until their dream became victory."

Praise God! South Dakota is a blessed state.
Let’s get this passed nationwide.
Goes to show you that they can scream all they want about”Family Planning” and “Women’s health”, PP is all about abortion.
Otherwise they would still be there with other services.
That would be like heart surgeons shutting down their practice because they refuse to tell the patient of the risks.

I'm betting the next state to follow South Dakota's lead will also be in the Great Plains-- North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas or Oklahoma.
There is something about the air on the open prairies which makes it very difficult to deny the existence of God.
Does anyone know if there are private practice MDs who still perform abortions in the state?
Sadly, just because the clinics are closed doesn’t mean abortions won’t, take place.
Exactly! This is a great tactic and other states should follow suit. The legislation itself seems relatively benign, simple, and minor, compared to overturning Roe V. Wade, but its appeal to basic human decency is powerful.
Is it because they do not wish to comply or is it because most women would not have an abortion after finding out there’s a baby inside them?
I believe most women would choose life if they could see the whole fetus before an abortion.
Then again, there will always be those women who don’t have a problem with throwing babies away like trash and then going to party.
This is great news!
God bless those whose efforts brought forth this victory!
Really?
Are you talking about the abortionists?....conscience?
I find that hard to believe...
The only abortionists with a conscience, IMO, are the ones who repented & found Christ's forgiveness....and have publicly tried to right their wrongs.
Until that happens, I truly don't think they worry about a conscience.
Yeah, but Minnesota isn’t. They’re going to head east to get their abortions.
The state of South Dakota is lucky to have a couple like Dr. Allan and Leslie Unruh. I met them years ago in Dallas and their passion for all life issues is phenomenol. Glad to hear of their success.
For some hardened women, I am sure this is true. But for those who are on the fence or think there are no other options, the fact that now there are no abortions available in South Dakota will have real effects. As the article states, "However, several women who were scheduled for abortions this week went to a pro-life center instead, where some have reportedly changed their minds about having abortions." If the only agencies in the immediate area in the yellow pages under "Abortions" are the pro-life crisis pregnancy centers then there is no doubt this legislation will save lives.
Say what you will about the servants of Satan, but lazy and complacent they are not.
I truly believe that as science continues to develop, and more tools allow us to see a baby - in great detail, during the first 3 months, it’ll make it that much harder for preg mothers to abort... more importantly, it’ll make it harder for the general public to support this heinous act. JMHO
“It didn’t take the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and it didn’t take a new President or a new Supreme Court.”
But having Alito and Roberts on the Supreme Court sure helps. I really worry what would happen if Obama has the opportunity to nominate justices to the Supreme Court.
Let's hope this left-wing nut job doesn't get the chance. Hard to believe people take him seriously, but apparently some do.
I agree. I don't think Roe v. Wade would have had the outcome it did if people could have seen pictures like this: Click here to see what abortion really looks like>
..I think most if not all abortion providers and butchers of babies have suppressed their conscience sufficiently and are in danger of never seeing it again.
It’s amazing to me that a doctor will get sued for malpractice if anything happens as a result of a procedure that s/he hasn’t disclosed (i.e. accepting the risk), but abortionists won’t do their evil deeds if they are required to disclose exactly what is happening to their patients!
It’s another mind-boggling aspect of liberalism that I just don’t understand!!
Then again, telling additional lies before butchery for hire may weight to heavily on their minds.
On the other hand, you could be right as I don't claim a special window into anybody's soul. The important thing is that the South Dakota requirement seems to be working and should be expanded.
What sent them packing...?
My guess, with this new ruling, they could see the handwriting on the wall, and decided to get out of Dodge.
Must be the tornadoes. ;-)
"Normally Planned Parenthood flies in an abortion practitioner from Minnesota because no one locally in South Dakota will do abortions." source here
Numerous articles are calling South Dakota "abortion-free." I assume that the term is literal.
Well technically that means that PP can't get a staff physician locally. I was stunned to learn that there are GPs and OBGYNs who will have a normal practice, but if asked will do the deadly deed (for a price). The reason PP has so much of the business is because of all the government subsidies that keep their price low.
I would be surprised if there wasn't some high-priced MD somewhere in the state who does them occasionally. Don't know about SD's reporting requirements. In most states such a doctor could slip in under the radar and not be noticed unless someone really went digging through official statistics.
Given human nature, I am sure this is true. So the "abortion-free" label is probably inaccurate. But at least some lives will be saved, because the South Dakota culture will not be as conducive to death. Many women won't be able to afford a private doctor or a trip to another state. Others who are on the fence will change their minds if "the procedure" isn't as "easy" or "convenient" as they had hoped.
I have some inlaws that support this evil.
SIL got a OB/GYN medical degree and was on “students for choice”.
MIL says, “oh, no, she didn’t become a Dr to perform abortions”
