Statement from Alaska Senator Ted Stevens
stevens.senate.gov ^ | July 29, 2008 | Senator Ted Stevens

Posted on 07/29/2008 1:57:51 PM PDT by HAL9000

I have proudly served this nation and Alaska for over 50 years. My public service began when I served in World War II. It saddens me to learn that these charges have been brought against me. I have never knowingly submitted a false disclosure form required by law as a U.S. Senator.

In accordance with Senate Republican Conference rules, I have temporarily relinquished my vice-chairmanship and ranking positions until I am absolved of these charges.

The impact of these charges on my family disturbs me greatly.

I am innocent of these charges and intend to prove that.

He sounds confident. Although Stevens is a RINO, I’d like to see the Democrat gloating over his indictment being spoiled.

I'm glad he's not worried about himself...only his family. What a big-hearted guy.

Ted may be corrupt, but if this all they have on him, this is pretty sad.

The testimony of the contracting people kind of have him dead to rights.
Just once, I would like to see one of our politicians care more about the country and party than themselves and step aside for the good of the country and party.
You’ve made your fortune..go. It remains to be seen whether you will save your honor.
In the meantime..what about Dodd and Countrywide? What about Senator Obama and Rezko helping with his house?
We still got two big houses to clean.

Those who say both parties are just the same, full of corrupt politicians, are wrong. Corrupt GOP politicians are booted out of office and out of the party. Corrupt Dims move up in leadership (usually to President.)

Over time, the difference is one party that is relatively upright, and one that is rotten to the core.

Pathetic! Trying to hide behind his service in WW2. I’d like to know what he is so proud about since then...filching American taxpayers for millions of dollars? This clown needs to resign, or the Republican party needs to back one of his primary challengers ASAP.

It’s a very sad day to those of us whose main allegiance is not to the Left or Right, nor GOP or Dem... but rather to the idea of good government.

Nothing good comes of this, except that bad is stopped.

It simply amazes me that Republicans are ... I don't know the easiest to catch or maybe it's a lesser burden of proof. It always seems the Republicans are announced and punished in the press before one can take a breath. The DemocRATS that are caught seem to be so far and few in between and the case is an uphill battle.

Graft and corruption equally exist on both sides of the aisle. Plus the biggest 'machines' have always been DemocRAT.

Just makes me wonder.

Nope. The Gov. has to attempt to establish your guilt—you choose your defense plan. You are not required to prove your innocence. Law 101? BTW, that bridge was pork and a fishing platform. Salmon run???? Any flyfishers here?

Someone needs to get a dart board with every senator from every state.

Then you would get the number of points based on how much money the Senator has grafted. Fun for the whole family.

You are making my point. Most of those are gone. This one just started, he'll be gone too. Toe-tapper is in big trouble, but is not really a criminal.

The Dims on the other hand, keep their crooks in office.

Stevens says he’s not guilty, and in our system he’s innocent until proven guilty, and that’s good enough for me. He is Innocent.

And you are right about the DemocRATS being dirtier than the Republicans. Everyone knows DemocRATS are totally corrupt. There are only a few small incidents of corruption among Republicans, and those who are guilty are not True Republicans.

This prosecution of Stevens is anothe political prosecution by Dem holdovers in the Justice Department. Bush, Gonzalez and Monica Goodling did their best to root out the disloyal and treasonous Dems, but the Congress just wouldn’t let them. That is intereference in the Executive branch by the legislature and should be illegal.

What the governor of Alaska has been saying for the past two years...is that the “old guard” of the Alaskan Republicans are absolutely corrupted. Stevens....his son who is a state big-wig political figure is also in trouble....and the sole Represenative for the state was reported in some corruption trouble a few months ago.

I think Palin was correct in her assessment. It’ll be hard to come up and find a couple of replacements in a hurry. But I think the state really needs to clean slate...and bring all these guys into a hotel conference room...and just plain lay out some ground rules to stop the corruption. The party ought to stand tall and establish a standard...and if the guy can’t stay clean...dump him from the party ASAP.
