Boris Tadic, the pro-Western President of Serbia, appealed for calm ahead of the demonstration. He has received death threats after the arrest of Dr Karadzic, not least from a Radical MP who compared him to Zoran Djindjic, Mr Tadics predecessor as head of the Democratic Party, who was assassinated in 2003 in revenge for the arrest of Slobodan Milosevic, the wartime President.
By 7pm, about 15,000 flag-waving demonstrators had gathered in Republic Square, chanting the name of Dr Karadzic. The stage was decorated with a huge blue canvas with the inscription,Freedom for Serbia, freedom for Radovan." ...
A group of between 100 and 150 football thugs carried a huge Karadzic photo and a banner addressed to the pro-Western Serbian leadership saying We will kill you all."
Another group carried a huge effigy of the Radical leader Vojislav Seselj, currently on trial in The Hague. Banners warned President Tadic that if he was not careful he would disappear. ...
Dr Karadzic faces genocide charges in connection with Srebrenica and with the 44-month seige of Sarajevo in which 12,000 people died.
The indictment was written with all the worst things that could be put into it, said Luka Karadzic after visiting his brother in his cell at the fortified court where he is being held pending his appeal.
But there is no link with my brother and there is no link with what happened in Bosnia and there is no link with the behaviour of the Serbian people and Serbian fighters in that war, he said.
He is proud of everything that happened. This is not a question about Radovan Karadzic and his destiny. The question is what he did for the Serbian people and what he did for the other side, for Muslims and Croats.

Hmmm. Not exactly the voice of reason.
Yeah, right if that's why think Djindjic was popped then they need to change their koolaid flavor.
As legitimate some of their concerns in Bosnia and Kosovo were, the Serb pro-Milosevic, pro-Karadzic forces never cease to make fools of themselves. First they have a party named “Radical party” and then they have hooligans burn the US embassy and threaten the government with murder... idiots.
Wow. For once we agree.
Djindjic had mafia ties, he was a stooge.
This was the Zemun organization's elimination of an associate who thought he could cross them.
If you knew the size of Zemun you would find it rather comical that it would have a crime syndicate.
The syndicate took its name from the neighborhood ages ago. Obviously it has grown in size and influence and is not restricted to a single post code.
The Gas House Gang in New York took its name from a single intersection in one neighborhood - but it effectively controlled all organized crime in NYC until the Sicilians moved in.
Of course, but spinning it that way helps the journalists sensationalize the story.
After reading all the sensationalist articles about this I was waiting for the Balkan version of the Zapruder film to be released and Oliver Stone to hit the talk show circuit.
I know where it took its name from and understand quite well how such an organization can grow, however, my point was if you knew the neighborhood you would understand why it would appear to be more of a caricaturization than one would normally associate with a “crime syndicate”.
It’s akin to Capone and Cicero.
You've got a lot of refugees in Serbia -- from the wars in Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, who have lost everything -- family, homes, friends, (in some cases more than once) -- and who never saw justice done. They just see more injustice heaped on. It doesn't make for the most rational, logical and coherent strata of society, but those are the ones you always see in photographs of "Serbs" like the ones above.
Look at the guy in the top photo, bottom right hand corner. That guy doesn’t look like any “Serb” I have ever seen!
More like Oak Park.
Always thinking with your head.
Thats my daughter...14 y/o, i.e trip to BG/BiH in 1994...:) Hands off!
