When she was just 19, Sandeela Kanwal traveled from America to Pakistan for an arranged marriage to a cousin twice her age.
Less than six years later, she was dead — strangled — and her father, Chaudhry Rashid, was arrested by police as the suspect for what some have called an "honor killing."
After their marriage, Kanwal had lived in the United States apart from her husband, who remained in Pakistan. She was reunited with him in April at her family home in Atlanta, but he moved to Chicago days later, leaving her alone once again.
On July 1, Kanwal filed for divorce, a prospect her father, a 52-year-old immigrant from Pakistan, would not entertain. Investigators say that after an argument on the night of July 5, he strangled Kanwal with a bungee cord. He could not accept the "disgrace" a divorce or affair would bring on his family, according to police.
The United Nations estimates that as many as 5,000 women are murdered in such honor killings each year for offenses like immodesty or refusing an arranged marriage. They may be on the rise in the U.S., as seen anecdotally in Kanwal's death and a handful of other prominent attacks:

I really think we need to launch a campaign to get the media to stop using the term “honor killing”. That’s taking the murderers’ viewpoint. Let’s brainstorm here for an alternate term that calls this barbaric type of murder what it is.

I’m glad they call them ‘honor killings.’ I don’t want people to forget for a minute that this is a culture that has notions for which we have no equivalent. I don’t want them to just make it sound like just another dysfunctional family affair. It’s not an aberration of their family values. It IS their family value.

The girl that survived and said she did not blame Islam. Did this girl ever say WHY she thought her brother tried to kill her? If not Islam then WHY?

Well, it’s what it is, killing in the name of honor.
But I think we need to educate people. For instance, if “honor killing” means to kill your own daughter or sister because she was divorced or raped or abused, because it offends the family honor, that just goes to show that Muslims have a very perverted sense of honor, which involves killing the victim.
Similarly, Muslims use the word “martyr” for terrorists. I think we need to point out that a Christian martyr is someone who is willing to die for his faith, if necessary, but that a Muslim martyr is someone who is willing to kill other people for his faith. If a Muslim martyr dies without managing to kill someone, preferably as many women and children as possible, then he is judged a failure by his Muslim friends.
We need to point out these significant differences, because the leftist media and the politically correct arbiters insist that there’s no essential difference between Christianity and Islam. Well, there are differences, and these are two of them.

Honor killing in the US of A. What a concept. They kill daughters and wives for becoming “westernized”. What seems typical of these Muslim men is that they take absolutely no responsibility for the fact that they chose to emmigrate to America, brought their wives or married here, brought their children or bred them here, and then are upset when their wife or daughters become westernized. It is truly their fault. If they wish to live in this way and wish to retain these ways, they do not belong here. If there is an honor killing, the fathers and/or brothers should kill themselves for subjecting their families to western values. I have noticed that Arab culture always blames everyone but themselves for any perceived injustice, etc. Come to think of it, this is a characteristic that most leftists seem to exhibit as well. Progressives or throwbacks?

Several years ago we had a case where the father took out a contract on his daughter, he wasn’t ‘brave’ enough to kill her himself, rather he paid someone else to do the filthy deed. It came to court.
The magistrate (judge) explained, as he gave the father a less than mandatory sentence, that he had to take into account the CULTURAL DIFFERENCES...
My blood still boils whenever I think of it.
Makes me take the concept of “end-times” a lot more seriously.
When are all the local DAs going to go into the Muslim communities, and tell them all that honor killings are not the American Way, and if they engage in them, they will be sent back to whichever Muslim country they come from?
To go even farther, what about public service messages telling all muslim immigrants, in their own language, that this kind of religious behavior isn’t tolerated here, and if they wish to retain their family honor, they better get their sorry backsides back to the country of origin?
What the he-double-toothpicks is going on here, FRiends? Why can’t our justice system make it crystal clear that Muslims who prefer to live according to their heathen faith better go back home, pronto.
Moving to the USA doesn’t mean they get to practice as if they were living in the homeland, or else what else will we have to tolerate? Cannibalism?
