"The clear failure of secondary LEP students unquestionably demonstrates that, despite its efforts, TEA has not met its obligation to remedy the language deficiencies of Texas students," Justice wrote. "After a quarter century of sputtering implementation, defendants have failed to achieve results that demonstrate they are overcoming language barriers for secondary LEP students. Failed implementation cannot prolong the existence of a failed program in perpetuity." The state should come back with a "drop everything and learn English" approach. Not that the judge would accept it....

Our language is English, our schools teach in English. There are already many programs that teach English. The basic problem is cultural laziness. If they can’t deal with our language they can go back and try the Mexican education system. Texans are tired of accommodating this sort of thing.

Even if there was a "learn English" approach, the families of these kids would not follow through in the home. Unless somehow it can be proven to these folks that speaking English is best in their self-interest, it will always be this way.
Why should they learn? Everything around here is printed in both languages, and everywhere I go, I hear Spanish being spoken. What's their incentive to learn English, as long as they are coddled by folks like this judge?

In Europe they have various terms for their royalty:
Your Highness, Your Majesty, King, Queen, Duke, Duchess, Prince, Princess, etc.
It can be very confusing.
Here, in America, we just call them Judge or Your Honor.

What? Did they figure out that here in Dallas they have several schools that are Spanish only and they are going to make them speak some English? Because there are many in the very neighborhood where I live that are 100% and buddy I
mean 100% mexican anchor babies. I go through the school zones on my way home and with the windows down nary a single word of English is heard. The schools front and back areas are 100% mexicans.
NO whites.
NO blacks.
Mexican.
There are enough DISD guards and Dallas cops to make it look like a prison yard.

Except in Europe the royalty have no real power.
The judges in this country have absolute power. Their decrees cannot be contested.
The Romans had a title for a magistrate with this kind of power.
It was Dictator.

Here in Central Texas, one of our little granddaughters (1st grade no less) was put in a class of NON-english speakers, known as Mexicans, probably fresh from Mexico.
Well, that didn't last long, her Mom immediately flamed the administration and got her transferred to an English speaking class, she has since changed schools, thank God.
We went to some of her special days and it was little Mexico. One teacher presented class awards in Spanish. She was told by several parents after the awards presentation that here we speak English during all official functions. Her English was horrible.
This is the kind of crap we're up against. Fight it FReepers. My daughter-in-law did and won. Fight it!

Judge Justice was the judge that handed down the decision that required Texas(and the nation) to provide an education to the illegals. But it didn't stop there.
When the judges declared Prop 187 in CA to be unconstitutional, Justice's Texas decision was used as the authority.
Judge Justice was also the judge who made the original decision on prison rights.

Here in north Texas, in a very upscale community, it is finally getting more notice than ever. I believe the Arlington ISD director was just dismissed/resigned because of financial reasons, but had stated he intended to bring bilingual education to Arlington against the wishes of many very upset parents. He is now gone. The sad reality is that we can’t stem this invasion for long. I am now actively looking for a place to move. I can’t bare the thought of leaving Texas, but it may come to that...Any suggestions?

Arizona has been fighting this issue since the 1990's. There have been several stays and then the issue comes up again. I really don't know what the status is now. For a while, the State of AZ was supposedly "fined" several thousand dollars a day until they "complied". AZ didn't and fought it ... again ... and I think the "fine" was lifted.
Several days of the "fine" had piled up, but i think the few conservatives we have left here circumvented it.

I totally agree with you!
We have produced a huge group of victims who do not understand values, morals, ethics and economics. Also, way too many folks have ditched the ethics of paying for right labor versus cheap labor so they assist the illegals who do only cash transactions so all is off the books. They get cheap labor at the cost of all of us who don’t. The same ones wonder why their taxes are so high. We provide free healthcare (so why pay for it?), free schooling, free food. One Central Texas School’s sign said, “Free Lunch”—it’s not free, it’s TAXPAYER provided, but that would make them “feel” bad to eat it....right!!!

Regarding the directives to improve bilingual education, shove it. You don’t tell us how to run our schools. If you want to cut off federal funds, that’s fine with us. We will no longer collect your taxes.
It would behoove you to read the Constitution of the United States; specifically, Article X of the Bill of Rights.

I'm not so sure there IS somewhere to move out of Texas. My friends in MI and the NW are talking about similar problems. Lack or refusal to assimilate is the norm in these situations. Unfortunately, we really haven't "solved" the problem in our case, just shift around a bit (our daughter-in-law), it's everywhere and the arrogance of school districts is something to experience.
The phenomena of surrender going on in our society when there is really no need to is disheartening, can't understand it. No fighting spirit, no dig in and push back, just appeasement and surrender such as happening within the GOP. We'll get just what we deserve by continuing with this mindset. Nothing is "owed" us by just being here, we must push back and regain lost (or surrendered) territory.

One of the biggest problems with bilingual education in Texas is that some the teachers are MONOLINGUAL.
But not monolingual as in English speaking, but monolingual as in Spanish speaking. A study found over 30% of the bilingual teachers in Houston (a bunch)were proficient only in Spanish.

Come to Kallyfornia we need all the English speakers we can get. Just kidding. Try western Montana or Idaho. The climate is different but it is still U.S. territory. Be aware the property values are being moved up even in this economy by people doing just as you want to do.

Truth be told I doubt most of the Hispanics I see in the HEB can read Spanish anyway. I don’t say that to be snarky, but illiteracy in any language is typical of a lot of our illegal population.
Where I live HEB and WalMart are our only choices. I find myself buying groceries at WalMart more and more. Here they don’t bend over backwards to coddle those who don’t speak English. I totally understand HEB is in business to show a profit but they are remarkably proactive about changing the primary language in Texas from English to Spanish.

I was sort of stunned when my brother told me of a discovery he

He told me that some of the illegals working as aides at a local

Texas ordered to improve bilingual education
I don't know the current state of affairs, but maybe six or seven
years ago, California's voters passed a state initiative that mandated
pushing kids in public school to learn English and tried to kick
"bilingual education" to the side of the road.
A year later, reports were coming out of the public schools
(I remember one from Oceanside, CA) about how after a year of
this course, no matter the native tongue, virutally all kids were
doing English at a functional level.
I know the "bilingual educators" were fighting this tongs-and-hammer;
it creates a lot of jobs for teachers imported from outside the USA
(yep, they were importing folks to do the bilingual classes).

Uh, oh.....some won’t like that observation. Interesting isn’t it, that 200 years ago, peasants coming to this country seemed to learn English just fine. In fact, at the beginning of the 1800’s the Cherokee learned English, developed their own written language and learned to read and write that as well as proper English....all in about 10 years time.
Latinos could do the same, if they wanted to, but they don’t have to, do they?

I wonder each day — how long will it take for the average American to wake up and see what is happening? Will it be too late? I see the average Joe beginning to stir, but the longer it takes them to fully awake, may make this problem impossible to fix.
