Terrified workers at a mining compound in one of Russia's most isolated regions are refusing to go to work after a pack of giant bears attacked and ate two of their colleagues.
At least 30 of the hungry animals have been seen prowling close to the mines in northern Kamchatka in search of food, where the mangled remains of the two workers, both guards, were found last week.
The Kamchatka brown bear is one of the world's largest, with males growing to around 10 feet and weighing up to 1,540 pounds. They can also reach speeds of up to 30 mph despite their size.

I always wanted to go to Kamchatka. I understand the trout and salmon fishing is great. I wonder why the bears are eating humans instead of salmon?
Here is a thought. Shoot and eat the bears.
“10 feet and weighing up to 1,540 pounds....”
Now, THAT is a big bear.
Bush’s fault.
They’re easier to catch?
yikes.
As if being a miner wasn’t dangerous enough....
Terrified?
Why?
Clearly, all the miners need do is to schedule some talks (with no pre-conditions) and find out exactly what the bears want.
If only miners could get endangered species status...

Da Bears do have an appetite from time to time.
What’s the minimum caliber you’d consider for that task?
...that, and they don’t have to get their toes wet
Wow. Ah. .475 Weatherby?
Especially a Vodka stupored sleeping guard
maybe bears like that vodka taste
7.62x54mm
Global warming. either way its Bush’s fault./sarc
Surprised we haven’t heard that one yet for not drilling in ANWR - killer bears!

Or get a .50 cal and put a stop to it.

Big Azz Bear
They would if they could, but the problem with the Alaskan National Wildlife Reserve is it has everything but Wildlife there.
Yikes you mean these guys went off into remote bear country without a weapon?????? Oh yeah, this is Russia, guns aren’t allowed there, I am sure.
Protect your constitutional right to arm bears!
Hmm...30mm at a minimum.
I was going to suggest a .375 H & H at minimum. Maybe that’s not enough.
A male bear and his mate were the perpetrators. The female ate the Russian guard while her mate did the same to the other guard, an immigrant from the Czech Republic. When the medical examiners showed up, they were told that the Czech was in the male.
Where the humans dead or alive when the bears first found them?
If the only thing preventing you from getting a big gold nugget or, explosives out of a mine is two guards......
That’s cheating. The bear is standing on a pedestal.
....time to breakout the .405 Winchester and head for Kamchatka, USSR....you know there’s a capitalist opportunity here for the Ruskies....a friend of mine is currently shopping for a guided Grizzly bear hunt in Alaska...he can’t find anything under $20,000!....and that’s for a hunt that’s technically in the United States...no telling what kind of dough the Russians could charge to a select few super wealthy hunters from outside the country...especially if they did a package deal including trout/salmon fishing....the waters there are said to be pristine.
Thanks for my laugh of the day, to me, that was funny.
There’s no way a bear could catch me. It’s just to hard for them to get traction when they are running through 6 inches of warm sh**.
50 cal sound about right. And lots of them.

Nothing says bear rug like 10 shots of 454 Casull.
“Whats the minimum caliber youd consider for that task?”
....when Alaska officials went to investigate the site of Timothy Treadwell’s fatal attack they took 12 guage pumps with slugs....they were in very thick cover and needed something for close work that would also plow thru brush/limbs and not deflect....they killed the bears that ate Treadwell and his girl friend.
I do remember a few incidents in Nam where Tigers were killed with .223 caliber bullets. (Lots of them.)
Questions:
Was one of the workers from Prague?
Could the Czech have been in the male?

The pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds It stood 12′ 6″ high at the shoulder, 14′ to the top of his head. Its the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.
[snip]
Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker. The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hikers 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bears dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

I don't know what the miners will do about their problem. /s
In Putin’s Russia, you don’t trap bears, bears trap you!
I was once offered the opportunity to go bear hunting in Alaska for much, much, less than that. I quickly agreed, but when my 12 year-old daughter found out, she swore she would never speak to me again if I did.
