Iran is set to receive an advanced Russian-made anti-aircraft system by year-end that could help fend off any preemptive strikes against its nuclear facilities, senior Israeli defence sources said on Wednesday.

Having had experience with the TALD (Tactical Air Launched Decoys), it seems to me that all that is required is to put radar reflectors on small cruise missiles and saturate their systems. If they fire all of their multi-million dollar S-300s, etc. knocking down cheap decoys, they will be out of arrows and it won't matter what their radars see. In fact, I rather like the idea of them getting a nice clear picture of the strike package coming in, after they've fired off their last round.

No they can’t. It was the likes of Debka that gave Syria advanced modern air defense systems. The Israelis took the path of least resistance to the undefended target in the eastern Syrian desert. The Syrians took the gamble on not drawing attention to the facility by positioning air defences around it. They gambled and lost.

The Israeli’s used part of Turkish airspace and skirted through the least defended part of Syria to get to the facility. No Israeli planner is going to endanger or take the risk of putting a strike package through the main areas of the Syrian air defense system.

There is no Syrian bug. You are falling into the trap of listening to media hype. There is no magic button to take down an entire air defense system.

The likes of SA-10/20 and SA-15s are taken extremely seriously by the likes of the Israelis, U.S. and NATO. The Israeli’s themselves know bitterly through aircraft losses to Russian SAM systems over the years. They don’t take the threat of the latest Russian systems lightly.

Good for Iran! They need the best equipment and this is an excellent purchase for them.

They even can ask the Syrians for references.

Funny how Russia and Barack Obama have so much in common... They like to have it both ways/take two different stands on the same issue at the same time.

Only recently, there was word out of Moscow that Iran did, in fact need to end the nuclear projects.

Now Russia is going to help protect those same projects.

Hmmmm...

Well that’s some interesting information but why didn’t the Israelis just fly directly through the unprotected desert then.

Off topic but I wonder where Assad’s summer home is. These seem to be able to buzz that when they want to.

They'd probably insist on a Ram-Dama-Ding-Dong holiday "bombing pause" and then reload.

Pretty much what happened with North Vietnam, Christmas time 1972.

That's the B-2 Stealth Bomber. It can carry a bit more than that. 80 500 lb bombs, JDAM or dumb bombs. Or 16 2000 pounders. Or 21 250 lb bombs (GPS guided smart ones). A sort of one aircraft air offensive. Two is overkill for most countries. But I'd use 3 for Iamanutjob and the Mad Mullahs, and let the Israelis take the leavings.

Oops. Make that 216 250 lb bombs. Kind of ruined the whole effect. :(.

Maybe so, maybe not, but ? didn't we hear about some news a few years ago that the US military has the capability to hack into our enemies defense systems and take them over and control them ?

Yea, but what are 216 smart bombs worth? Like I said, a one aircraft, one sortie, air offensive. Two hundred sixteen independent targets.

Again media hype. Certain systems would be vulnerable to a hack, but not all. Far too many manual systems and options to magically take down an entire air defense system. Same with stealth systems you use the best of intelligence in an attempt to weave your way through. The Isreali’s are not stupid enought to fly straight through a hornets nest and risk even one of their aircraft being shot down. They simply exploited the weaknesses in the Syrian sytems to get to a totally undefended target. The Syrians gambled and lost.

They expolited the weak point in the Syrian defenses. The northern area has always been weak. The Israeli’s have been using Turkish bombing ranges for years now. They did a similar trick with Egypt years ago by conducting large scale training strike packages out over the Med. One day those ‘training packages’ turned and the Egyptians were caught on the hop.

A very small strike package simply turned and weaved its way through the peninsula that juts down into Syria. They skirt the Turkish border and make their way to a completely undefended target. They egress the same way and back out into the Med. The path of least resistance and a major headache for the Syrians. The Syrians took the gamble in not deploying air defenses around the facility and lost.

Assad’s summer residence is at Latakia on the Med coast. Very easy pickings for the Israeli’s to buzz it!
