Official: Democratic Convention Hosts Skirt Gas Tax
New York Sun ^ | July 23, 2008

The host committee for the Democratic National Convention set for Denver next month is avoiding paying state and federal taxes on gasoline by gassing up vehicles at a city fuel depot, according to a city councilwoman quoted yesterday on the Web site of the Rocky Mountain News. "There's something there that just doesn't seem right ..." the Denver official, Jeanne Faatz, said at a city meeting yesterday.

"I believe this [tax free gas pump] is only for elected officials, government dignitaries," Mayor Hickenlooper said at the session, according to the News.

Republican National Convention's host committee in [Minneapolis], Teresa McFarland, told the paper. "We're not getting a tax break on fuel," she said. "That's not the set-up at this end."

A spokeswoman for the Democratic convention, Natalie Wyeth, said the taxes would be paid. "The Denver Host Committee will pay all applicable taxes and fees related to their fuel contract, as they should," she said in a statement e-mailed to The New York Sun.

That's the second outrage in the article.

Yea, now that you were caught NOT paying them for who knows how long, and now that you all have every gas can you can buy filled with cheap fuel stashed away for the year.

Remember, “Paying taxes is only for the little people.” To the rat everyone in America is a little person.

NJ allows all former governors, even those who left in disgrace, free limo rides, free gas, whenever they wish.

No gas bills, no taxes, no cost to them for limos.

Isn’t Governor Corzine just so very generous.

Sad part is that even if everybody knew, few would care. The corruption goes on in broad daylight.

Clintonesque

If the contract does not mention taxes, they won't pay

Pathetic.

Never mind the convention delegates getting tax free gas, what about the whole concept of tax free gas for "elected officials, government dignitaries"?

Why should "elected officials, government dignitaries" be entitled to a perquisite to which the people that elected them are not entitled/

Obama's stance on giving us a break from the gas tax:

But Senator Barack Obama, Mrs. Clinton’s Democratic rival, spoke out firmly against the proposal, saying it would save consumers little and do nothing to curtail oil consumption and imports.

While Mr. Obama’s view is shared by environmentalists and many independent energy analysts, his position allowed Mrs. Clinton to draw a contrast with her opponent in appealing to the hard-hit middle-class families and older Americans who have proven to be the bedrock of her support. She has accused Mr. Obama of being out of touch with ordinary Americans who are struggling to meet their mortgages and gas up their cars and trucks...

Mr. Obama derided the McCain-Clinton idea of a federal tax holiday as a “short-term, quick-fix” proposal that would do more harm than good, and said the money, which is earmarked for the federal highway trust fund, is badly needed to maintain the nation’s roads and bridges.

In 2000, Mr. Obama supported a bill in the Illinois legislature to suspend most of the state’s 6.25 percent gasoline sales tax. But he later opposed making the reduction permanent, arguing that the state needed the revenue and that the measure had saved consumers little.

New York Times, 4/29/08

Obama ignored Clinton and criticized McCain instead, saying his proposal would save motorists only about $25 or $30. "That's his big solution," Obama told several thousand people at a noisy rally in Wilmington, N.C. "He had the gall yesterday to tell me that because I don't agree with his plan, I must not be sympathetic to poor people. This is at the same time as he is proposing hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks for corporate interests, for the wealthiest Americans."

The Boston Globe, 4/29/08

Barak Obama is today's version of Marie Antoinette. When given the opportunity to give the little people a temporary break, his response is "let them eat cake." Whatta guy!

That's the second outrage in the article.

I'm OK with the city not paying gas tax if the gas is used for city vehicles on city business. The city's residents shouldn't be paying taxes to pay taxes.

However, I'm willing to bet those elected officials are gassing up vehicles they take home with them and use on personal business. That's an outrage.

Is that tax free gas for official vehicles or a perk for the elites private vehicles?

Pathetic indeed and you're spot on about everyone wanting in on the action.

Throw away your books on excellence and leadership and take a lesson from Boss Tweed?

Am I getting too cynical? Hope not, there's a lot I still want to accomplish, just hope there's a country left to do it in?

Most likely thats why nothing ever gets done about the government corruption. No one can do anything about it because they all are in on it.

This is why the American people have low approval ratings for these people.

The Dems go out and vote for the people that will steal from others to give it to them for free, while lining their own pockets with the booty.

The Republicans have dumped all their principles in order to keep the elites coffers full and hell with everybody else.

Cynical, I know.
