BEIJING -- Chinese police officials have forced some Beijing bar owners to sign secret pledges promising to prohibit blacks from entering their bars during the Olympics next month, a Hong Kong newspaper says.
The police denied the report yesterday, and most bars denied any knowledge of the pledges. But many African residents of Beijing say they are facing harassment from police and discrimination from bars as the Olympics approach.
"Bar owners near the Workers Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises," the South China Morning Post reported yesterday.
It quoted the co-owner of a bar who said that a group of police had recently visited his establishment to order it "not to serve black people or Mongolians."
In the famed Sanlitun bar district of Beijing, some bar owners have been required to sign pledges agreeing to ban a variety of activities, including dancing and serving black customers, the newspaper said.
Africans and Mongolians are often perceived as criminals in Beijing.
The Africans spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing more harassment from the police if they are identified. The Nigerians, interviewed at a bar, asked that the bar not be identified because they were worried that it could be raided if the police learned that Africans congregate there.

The ghost of Jesse Owens will weigh heavily on this Olympics.
Who was the brainiac who decided China would be a good place for the Olympics?
Not a single verifiable source was named.
I understand that the Commie's are capable of this, but until we have proof what do we really know?
I do support not allowing anyone on the streets or in a business if they do not have proper ID.
The WOT is not over.
If only the U.S. held their elections before the Olympics and Obama were elected... Then everything would be better. Blacks would be viewed in better light. Mongolians will be able to find work that doesn’t involve stir fried chicken with hot sauce. The lame would walk, the mute would talk, and children everywhere will have the same health care afforded to U.S. Senators.
If only... /sarc
Sounds like a Walgreen's commercial.
The Western media will do everything in their power to make these Chinese Olympics the most wonderful and magical Olympics ever.
It makes no sense.
I really think this is a BS story. We’re here in Beijing right now and we see plenty of black people in plenty of bars.
Don't you wish you had a dollar for every time that question has been asked by someone since this whole fiasco began? I think I can say with some confidence that you would have a nice amount of spending cash.
Our cultural proclivities are not shared by the rest of the world. Not everyone sees the virtues of racial integration and diversity. The Japanese deny citizenship to anyone who isn’t japanese....
It seems to be a totally bogus story. As I said, we’re here in Beijing having a great time. I see people of all backgrounds out and about enjoying bars and restaurants.
But I guess people will believe what they want to believe.
FYI...
The IOC.
Send in Michelle, she’ll clean up.
You may be right. But we are in Shanghai, and I can tell you that here, black people are not favored customers in wholly Chinese owned establishments. They generally must seek the places that have foreign management present. But then this may be the Mason-Dixon line of China. I don’t really know.
Uh.. We all know how tolerant commies are of criticism.

“compound w” tells us that such stories are lies.
Hey compound w - care to comment. Are you still willing to compare your single experience with personal and detailed accounts mentioned in multiple sources?
1. The reports mostly seem to be unverified. 2. I’m highly skeptical of these unverified reports. 3. Yes, I think my obserevations are valid.
We had a great time in Beijing last night. Had a great dinner, visited a bar or two, and everyone I saw on the street seemed to be enjoying themselves without any problem other than the occasional wild taxi driver.
