All the familiar trappings, the flamboyant and the tongue-and-cheek, were there.
The buff guys in gold sequins. The leather-clad women riding Harley hogs. The vendors hawking necklaces with oversized rainbow-colored beads.
The crowd of more than 150,000, piled six deep in some places along the parade route from Hillcrest to Balboa Park, cheerfully ogling the spectacle.
Yet more than anything else, the 34th annual San Diego Pride parade and festival yesterday was an emotional celebration after the California Supreme Court ruling in May that legalized marriage for gay and lesbian couples of the absolutely ordinary.
Of the shared cup of coffee in the morning that tastes just that little bit better. Of the pause, after the tiff, that makes you not walk out the door. And of parents not having to explain to their children what domestic partner means.
Everyone understands what marriage is, said Laura Mathis as she marched with a contingent from the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, pushing a stroller that held her two sons, Kiko, 4, and Sheridan, 11 months.
...
But Fraizer said she plans to vote no on Proposition 8.
A lot of people say marriage should be between men and women, but I believe in equality, Fraizer said. There was a time when black and white people couldn't marry; now they can. Why shouldn't we have freedom?
The festival continues from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in Balboa Park, with activities that include a Right to Marriage Celebration at 1 p.m. and a performance by comedian Kathy Griffin at 6 p.m.

Apparently, not everyone...

The whole gay straight alliance is so stupid.
I know some kids who belong and say it’s a dumb idea and kids are all but forced to join.

"We're normal! We're normal!"
And me stuck in Chicago not able to go. I’m so sad. So Sad.
Just another reason Californicate has been on fire since the courts usurped the voice of the public.
My stepnephew is a 6’6 quarterback of his high school football team going into his senior year (and being recruited by several universities leaning towards Northwestern as he probably isn’t NFL caliber but good enough for a full ride in college and he wants to be an engineer and NU is among the top for that) and he also plays baseball, is in the band and is a 4.0 student who holds down a pt job pressured to join the Gay Straight Alliance. He was called a homophobic for refusing. He just doesn’t have time.
Who cares that he missed a game last year defending one of his best friends, who is gay because he was beaten up. If he wasn’t so strong he might be dead.

Several years ago I saw a man in Tulsa, Ok riding a Harley. Onhis jacket it said...
“GOD MADE HONDAS TO KEEP ________ OF OF HARLEYS.
I will let you all fill in the blank.
OF OF HARLEYS = OFF OF HARLEYS.
proof read, proof read.
They should rename it the emerging infectious diseases alliance.
Spew. Perversion on public display.
I know some kids who belong and say its a dumb idea and kids are all but forced to join.

Could you expand on this little?
Kids in government schools are **pressured** to join the Gay Straight Alliance?
Parents know about this?
Parents agree to this?
Unbelievable! I think the frog in the pot of slowly warming water is nearly fully cooked. ( Free babysitting must be powerfully addictive.)
Yes it is kids are pressured to join the alliance by teachers. Nobody is forced per se but it is implied it would be in their best interests.
Sounds like the Lavender Mafia.
Sounds like the Lavender Mafia. darkangel82
Rexgrossmanson,
Yes, this does sound like the Lavender Mafia. And, if parents are aware of this, why are they continuing to send their kids to these schools????
It’s the Bucket woman, run.
I still watch that each week. Brits have the best humor.
BTW I live a few block from where this prade started
Have seen it a few too many times. Can’t describe the sights.
It’s pronounced “Bouquet”. But Richard will tell you it was always pronounced “Bucket” when he was young. Great show. I loved how you neither heard nor saw Sheridan ever but you could tell just by Hyacinth’s side of the phone conversation he was a bit light in the loafers.

I was shocked to learn that there is a "pride" parade in Ft Worth, but that it is held in October because of the intense Summer heat during "pride season." Hopefully, this event will never gain any real traction in the general community.
Existing state law prohibited against discrimination against homosexuals. Therefore this glorified straw poll that was the marriage act was rightfully thrown out. The only way Cali voters and/or their reps can change this is via a constitutional amendment.
