The right of African-Americans to vote in the United States is not permanent according to "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg. On the July 14 edition, Whoopi echoed the popular Internet rumor from a few years ago that voting rights for African-Americans was set to expire in 2007. [audio available here [0]]
"Do you know that we are the only people in the United States who have to have their voting rights okayed every couple of years? Did you know that they have to vote on the Voting Rights Bill for black folks? Can we just, can one of you candidates- can we just take care of that so I dont have to worry every year, my God am I not?"
The shows sole "conservative" Elisabeth Hasselbeck agreed "its ridiculous" and "something needs to be done."
Before spouting such inflammatory charges on national television, Whoopi should check the facts beforehand. Responding to some rumors, the Department of Justice [1] issued a press release clarifying the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Specifically, the 15th amendment to the Constitution prohibits racial discrimination in voting. The voting rights Act of 1965 enforces that Constitutional amendment. Because amendments to the Constitution do not expire, the 15th amendment is permanent.
Additionally, most of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is permanent as well. The few sections with limited time include "special provisions containing extraordinary remedies applied in certain areas of the nation for a limited time."
Such provisions were renewed [2] in 2006, but even if they did expire, according to the Justice Department, "they can be reinstated by court order if there is renewal of discriminatory practices."
So Whoopi should sleep well knowing she will not lose her right to vote and next time should research her facts before scaring a national audience.

Whoopi...you’re too stupid to vote. 15th Amendment....it’s right there.
Moron.
Oh, but it’s such a handy little tidbit to keep bringing up when you want to be a perpetual victim class,
and continue to have “whitey” feel gulty and give you special “set asides” based on your skin tone.
A medical oddity, for sure.
20 lbs or so lighter, a darker tan, it’s still Rosie O’Blabbermouth.
Should would not do well as a contestant on “Are you smarter than a 5th Grader”.
It saved us all from Sister Act III.
Reading “Whoopi Goldberg Airs” is scary enough, all by itself.
A bit of advice for Elisabeth - If a liberal brings up a "fact" that you've never heard before and it sounds ludicrous, it's not true.
One hundred percent of the time, it's not true. They make shit up and tell their friends who believe it, and then their friends repeat the dumb made up fact to them a week later and they forget that they originally made it up, so it appears true to them.
Tell them to STFU. Always.
“should research her facts before scaring a national audience.”
She did, she did the research and came up with the scariest scenario, the most divisive.
It sure looks that way. (sigh)
1. so many black people believe that nonsense.
2. nobody on “The View” has enough sense to correct it.
This is rampant on college campuses, which, unfortunately, is where I worked until I retired two months ago. And if you call them on it (a favorite pastime of mine) and they get caught with their pants down, they don't admit they're wrong, they start personal attacks on you because they know they're lying. Still, if you ignore their attack, hold your cool, and demand for the evidence to support whatever piece of BS it is that they're trying to foist onto the students, you usually can get the last word in ("That's what I thought...no evidence for your stupid statement.") and maybe...just maybe...sway one student's mind or at least make them pause and think for a moment. It doesn't win you any friends on campus, but it sure is fun.
“If a liberal brings up a “fact” that you’ve never heard before and it sounds ludicrous, it’s not true.”
You’ve hit the nail on the head.
I pine for the days when stupid people getting together and talking current events did not have their views broadcast into millions of living rooms each day.
I would never presume that Whoopie knows what she is saying.
I expect a lot more of this sort of lie / Internet meme to spread over the next few months. Like “the draft is coming back,” lie that MTV and the DNC pushed back in ‘04.
Well, “the government” keeps trying to eradicate dem folks with syphilis and AIDS and all, so why would it bother to make der voting rights permanent?
