John McCain on Monday asked Latinos to trust him on the thorny issue of how to treat the nation's illegal immigrants, a day after Barack Obama accused the Arizona senator of backing away from his a key position for fear of alienating GOP conservatives.
Far behind in polls that show Obama leading 2 to 1 among Latino voters, a feisty McCain spoke to the National Council of La Raza a day after the Illinois senator, and said he intends to make comprehensive immigration reform a top priority if elected.
But disappointing some at the Latino civil rights gathering, he said he stuck to his position that he only would consider a path to citizenship for illegal residents after he can prove to Americans that the border is secure. Otherwise, he argued, reform measures will never be enacted. He cited fears of national security and that a porous border leads to drug smuggling and other crimes.
"I do ask for your trust that when I say I remain committed to fair, practical and comprehensive immigration reform, I mean it. I mean it. With all due modesty, I think I have earned that trust."

Secure the borders. Enforce the laws. Require the online system be used by all companies on hiring.
Then watch the exports hit the road home. It’s already working just fine in Arizona.
There’s already a path to citizenship. It’s called going “home” and filling out the paperwork.
I’ll believe it when I see it, Juan.
Until then, keep going.
It’s working in Los Angeles as well. Know some businesses in the Garment District which previously hired illegals and currently, they now keep SSS and DMV ID’s (copies of) for ICE/IRS raids.
Obama promises amnesty for illegal immigrants
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2045609/posts
Here’s a bit of what Obama had to say: “Yes, they broke the law. And we should not excuse that. We should require them to pay a fine, learn English, and go to the back of the line for citizenship - behind those who came here legally. But we cannot - and should not - deport 12 million people. “
Obama went on to say: “That’s why we need to offer those who are willing to make amends a pathway to citizenship. That way, we can reconcile our values as both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.”
Juan McCain - Pure as the new driven slush.
La Raza and illegal aliens can trust him alright.
It is the legal citizens and legal voters of the US that cannot trust him.
Does he think we have forgotten how he, Ted Kennedy and his other sneaky, slimy one-world pals tried to slip the Shamnesty bill through in the dark of night with no open debate and no time for anyone to actually read the voluminous text?
Would you spend your hard earned money to buy a used car from this double-talking, lying, back-stabbing, traitorous sneak?
He’s still offering millions of big-time lawbreakers a path to citizenship, which would pertain to all of them gaining the same rights we have, and very likely preferential treatment. Add in Iranian, Venezuelan, Russian, North Korean, and Chinese spies.
I do NOT want them to be given a path to citizenship. If that makes me a racist, so be it.
Why would you want to consider "path to citizenship" to people who have already broken the law?
Not only should the borders be secured first, but immigration itself needs to be overhauled. There should be a moratorium on legal immigration. There should be NO citizenship deals or guest-worker programs.
We've had the football pulled from us one too many times by Lucy McCain.
McCain tried as hard as he could to get he and his buddy Ted Kennedy's amnesty through congress. He showed contempt for me and every other conservative and called us racist. McCain is a pimple on the butt of the Republican party and has zero credibility especially when it comes to criminal invaders of our Country. He would make a much better leader of a racist organization like La Raza then he would president.
We don't want amnesty for the 132 Million third world illegal aliens in 2065. By that time America has long since been buried.
I don't mind exchanging our ideas and opinions about the candidates here but your personal attacks and name calling are out of line and violate the rules on Free Republic.
Please refer to the title of this article:
"McCain: Border security before path to citizenship"
It is directed to McCain's comments and position on illegal aliens, not Obama's, and that is what I commented on.
There are other articles and threads that deal directly with Obama's statements and postions.
I don't ignore Obama's pandering, but then he isn't representing the Republican party which, supposedly, stands for enforcement of our laws and the US constitution.
McCain more closely represents the values of the Democrats on this issue than he does of conservatives and anyone who doesn't recognize that isn't paying attention.
They MUST leave the country.
If they want, they MUST apply at a US embassy or Consulate.
And they must get BEHIND all the other applicants, who are and were illegal.
This, FENCE OR NO FENCE, "FENCE FIRST" or no "FENCE FIRST".
The man is smoking CRACK. Pure and simple.
HE ....IS....TALKING....EVENTUAL....AMNESTY of millions.
You must have read a different speech than I did.
John McCain
puto loco
One thing that bothers me is that they are still talking about ten to twelve million illegal aliens inside our borders. That’s why we had in 2000, and we’re eight years down the road with 1.5 to 3.0 million coming across each year.
Tell me there isn’t something rotten in Denmark taking place here.
Are they legalizing all these people as fast as they roll over without telling the public? That’s the only way I know of for them to be accurate about that 10 to 12 million number.
Otherwise was have between 20 to 35 million here.
There’s something rotten in Denmark. I’m beginning to wonder if Bush hasn’t been slipping them in under the table all these years. It did seem strange to me that he didn’t take public action on the illegal alien issue, after promising to do so in 2000.
Is there a law that gives illegals who have been here for five years and can prove it, legal resident status if they request it? If so, we’ve been had, pure and simple.
Read my sloppy post in 20, and see if you have an answer to this question. Please. Thank you.
The 12 mil number is just repeated and reapeated without regard for actual numbers. Since 2000 the Border Patrol estimates that they lose about 3 illegals for every app. With a rate of at least a million apprehensions a year that would equate into 24 million that got away during the last eight years. Many apprehensions are recidivist. I would guess there’s about a 20 to 30 percent recidvist rate. In addition, many illegal go home and stay. So what is the actual number of illegals in this country? I don’t think anyone really has good grasp on the exact numbers. However, I think it’s much, much higher than 12 million.
Illegal aliens are almost always deportable no matter how long they have been here. I just finished on operation off of I-40. We caught people and deported them after they had been here for 15 years. I don’t think it would be too much an exaggeration to say that 1 out of every 5 cars on I-40 near LA had illegal aliens. Some were wet and some had been here for many years. You may already know that I-40 stretches across the US. It goes from around LA/Riverside to North Carolina. Can you imagine how many illegals it would take to create a ratio of 1 in 5 on I-40?
I agree. The "path to citizenship" MUST be reserved for those who enter legally, and follow our laws. The MOST I am willing to allow as "amnesty" is a "path to legalization" (permanent residency--WITHOUT the ability to roll that residency over into citizenship after some fixed period of time as current law states). Call it a "red card". And to get it, you MUST register with the feds. Anyone NOT so registered MUST be deported as soon as apprehended---no delays for "humanitarian reasons".
Thanks for your useless inputs, troll.
And until the border is secure, what do we do about those lawbreakers?
Pandering? It’s what for breakfast.
But seriously....WTH is McCain doing talking to La Raza? They represent Latinos like NOW represents women. They are bell-curve outliers who shamelessly promote lawlessness and fantasies such as the return of southwestern states to Mexico.
If McCain thinks they will vote for him in any significant number he is mistaken. In other words, he’s wasting his time which begs the question - who wears the pants in his campaign? If it’s him then his leadership and judgement must be questioned.
I am not a McCain hater, although I believe Duncan Hunter would have been our best candidate. To me this pandering to a criminal element is disgusting.
You put your hand on the Bible and promise to uphold the laws if this country. How do these politicians do that when they blatantly pandering to criminals?
Anything short of them all going home, with their anchor babies is BS.
What do we want? Well, I want the amnesty-for-invaders champion, John McCain, to fade into obscure retirement rather than become POTUS. I don’t want him rewarded for his political misdeeds, particularly right after the immigration reform debacle he tried to put over.
But because it’s either him or Obama, I’m supposed to vote for him.
Amnesty for invaders will destroy this country. Note I didn’t say ruin, I said destroy.
So it doesn’t matter if John McCain is better than Barack Obama in any other ways. They’re both poison for America.
People criticize me for taking a black-and-white, all-or-nothing position, then they turn around and say that if I don’t accept the better of two evils, I must be a radical idealist. Do it their way or be branded a ridiculous utopian. Seems to me THAT is a black-and-white, all or nothing classification.
I’m no idealist. I just don’t vote for an America destroyer to keep out an America-hating America destroyer.
Clear enough? Not voting McCain.
“he said he stuck to his position that he only would consider a path to citizenship for illegal residents after he can prove to Americans that the border is secure.”
I do not like McCain, I do not trust McCain but this is the kind of thing that takes guts considering the audience.
“what else do you McCain haters want ?”
He could retire and move to Florida.
“what else do you McCain haters want ?”
How about that POS backs the following and makes it part of his speech at the convention?....

Go shove your pompous, self righteous McCainbot head where the sun don't shine. The mere fact that McCain even takes time to address these racists speaks volumes. I expect it of the dem candidate. I'm repulsed that the GOP actually endorses McCain pandering to a racist hate group that supports Obama 3 to 1. You want to vote for the hispandering old fool, have at it.
McCain has not changed his position. He is still in favor of giving amnesty to “God’s children.” He is just sequencing now, secure the border and then grant an amnesty.
Obama didn’t promise instant voting rights, just a pathway to citizenship just like McCain.
Guts? Border security was part of McCain-Kennedy whereby there would be various triggers for amnesty as so much of the border was secured. Here are some other things that McCain said to La Raza about the subject:
" Let me address one other issue important to all of us. As you know, I and many other colleagues twice attempted to pass comprehensive immigration legislation to fix our broken borders; ensure respect for the laws of this country; recognize the important economic contribution of immigrant laborers; apprehend those who came here illegally to commit crimes; and deal practically and humanely with those who came here, as my distant ancestors did, to build a better, safer life for their families, without excusing the fact they came here illegally or granting them privileges before those who have been waiting their turn outside the country.
"Many Americans did not believe us when we said we would secure our borders, and so we failed in our efforts. I don't want to fail again to achieve comprehensive immigration reform. We must prove we have the resources to secure our borders and use them, while respecting the dignity and rights of citizens and legal residents of the United States. When we have achieved our border security goal, we must enact and implement the other parts of practical, fair and necessary immigration policy. We have economic and humanitarian responsibilities as well, and they require no less dedication from us in meeting them.
"Several years ago, the leading newspaper in my state published an article putting faces on the tragic human costs of illegal immigration, and I would like to briefly quote from it:
"Maria Hernandez Perez was No. 93. She was almost 2. She had thick brown hair and eyes the color of chocolate.
"Kelia Velazquez-Gonzales, 16, carried a Bible in her backpack. She was No. 109
"John Doe, No. 143, died with a rosary encircling his neck. His eyes were wide open."
We can't let immigrants break our laws with impunity. We can't leave our borders undefended. But these people are God's children, who wanted simply to be Americans, and we cannot forget the humanity God commands of us as we seek a remedy to this problem.
" At a moment of great difficulty in my campaign, when my critics said it would be political suicide for me to do so, I helped author with Senator Kennedy comprehensive immigration reform, and fought for its passage. I cast a lot of hard votes, as did the other Republicans and Democrats who joined our bipartisan effort. So did Senator Kennedy. I took my lumps for it without complaint. My campaign was written off as a lost cause. I did so not just because I believed it was the right thing to do for Hispanic Americans. It was the right thing to do for all Americans. Senator Obama declined t o cast some of those tough votes. He voted for and even sponsored amendments that were intended to kill the legislation, amendments that Senator Kennedy and I voted against. I never ask for any special privileges from anyone just for having done the right thing. Doing my duty to my country is its own reward. But I do ask for your trust that when I say, I remain committed to fair, practical and comprehensive immigration reform, I mean it. I think I have earned that trust.
I know many of you are Democrats, and many of you would usually vote for the presidential candidate of that party. I know I must work hard to win your votes, but you have always given me a respectful hearing, and I appreciate it. I know many of you were disappointed and hurt by those who used the debate on immigration last year, not to respectfully debate the issue, as most did, but to denigrate the contributions of Hispanics to our great country.
I denounced those insults then, and I denounce them today. My friends, you know me. One of my proudest achievements as a politician is to have won 75 percent of the Hispanic vote in Arizona in my last re-election. I believe I'm the only member of the Senate to have twice won your Congressional Leadership Award, a distinction I am also very proud of. Senator Obama is a fine man, and an inspiring public figure. All Americans should be proud of his success. I also greatly admire Senator Hillary Clinton, and value her friendship. She, too, would have been a very worthy opponent. But I intend to compete for your votes by continuing to earn your trust.
McCain was at his pandering best.
Yes, but a politician has to be a politician.
Pandering is, unfortunately, what wins elections.
I can back giving them legal status of some type if they can meet certain criteria but not citizenship.
You can’t outpander a Democrat on these issues. McCain is losing Rep support by his pandering and the fact is that he still supports an amnesty, which will destroy this country with the stroke of a pen.
Excellent imagery.
Hey, I was just saying that for McCain, this is as close to gutsy as he gets.
I don’t have an answer to your questions regarding “why?”, only theories (most all of which have been posted here on FR). As to the numbers, yours are higher than what I have normally seen.
As I recall, there were supposedly about 5 million illegal aliens estimated to be residing in the US when GWB took office. That number has been growing by about 1 million per year. That roughly brings us to the 12 million number that you often see referenced by FAIR and others.
When the McCain/Kennedy bill (S.2611) was being pushed in 2006, the Heritage Foundation (Robert Rector) did a pretty thorough analysis of the impact. When he looked at the fine print, he found that there were various provisions allowing for chain migration and an increase to annual immigration flows (i.e. guest-workers, etc); he estimated that it would result in an additional 103 million immigrants over the next 20 years. An amendment was quickly passed by the Senate that reduced that number to 66 million (still outrageous, IMO, as current law would allow for only 19 million over the next 20 years). Rector/s initial estimate of 103 million was what he considered to be a “reasonable” interpretation of the proposed law. He estimated the maximum numbers to be in the 200 million range.
I think the Heritage Foundation did some of the most comprehensive analysis out there. You can find some of those papers here:
http://www.heritage.org/about/staff/Robertrectorpapers.cfm
Did that help?
We need to also keep a watchful eye on the "guest worker" laws that are being pushed and changes to annual immigration quotas. Per my post #43 above, the provisions dealing with future increases to immigration flows would have been more damaging than amnesty to those currently residing in the U.S.
After listening to the audio of McCain's Q&A yesterday with La Raza, I think we are being set up. He kept saying that "we need to enforce the borders first." But what does that really mean and how will they demonstrate it?
Recently, I've seen stories of stepped up enforcement and a few raids. McCain has said he will ask the (pro-illegal immigrant liberal) border state governors to "certify" that the borders are secure. They seem to be laying the groundwork for a pending announcement: "The borders are now secure!" No new laws, no fence, no nothing--just a huge upcoming propaganda program hyping recent enforcement actions and a statement from Schwarzenegger, Richardson and their cronies that "The border problem is solved!"
The leopard hasn't changed his spots.
Poll: Voters Unaware of Candidates Immigration Positions; McCain Supporters Farthest Off the Mark
If you give them legal status, that is an amnesty. What kind of legal status are you talking about? Rewarding people who broke the law is not what this country is supposed to be about, i.e., the Rule of Law.
No, sssuming there are only 12 million illegal aliens, an amnesty will add another 66 million LEGAL immigrants thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification, on top of those granted amnesty over a 20 year period or a total of 78 million on top of regular immigration of 1.2 million annually. If there are 20 million illegals, then you can extrapolate the number, which will be over 100 million.
I agree with your comments. I generally estimate between 20 and 35 million illegals in country at this point.
We legalize all of them and they can bring over a number of relatives each. Not all the illegals are from Mexico, but if we legalize this many people all at once, we’ll pull in at last two more for every one of them legally.
On top of that McCain will offer up a generous worker visa program. Several million more per year can come across legally, on the program.
Sure he’s acting as if he’s closing the border, to illegals, and he may be in part. Instead he’s going to offer a legal way for the same amount of people to come over.
This nation will be swamped with in excess of 100 million new legal residents and citizens within a decades. That’s literally a one third addition to our populace in just ten years.
They will all be poor. They will all be under-educated. They will not be able to support themselves. They will not even be able to converse, write, or read English.
This is the John McCain vision for the United States.
A barrio coming to a neighborhood near you.
Welcome to the United Barrios of America.
How can anyone, conservative or not, vote for McCain when he is this hell bent to destroy this country? I will never again contribute to the RNC.
