Rose(with accent) from Provence is wonderful. Good and crisp without any bitterness, not sweet or in any way like other pink wines like “White Zinfandel.”

Yet the unfortunately named French-Irish collaborative label Rosé O'Donnell is just not selling.

"Pink wine is in vogue among French youth"

They haven't heard about 'code pink', I guess. LOL

["Pink wine is in vogue among French youth as a light-hearted, festive drink to be enjoyed with scant regard for labels, vintages, grape varietals and origin."]

During misspent youth, we were always concerned about the vintage of the Ripple wine we drank. When we really wanted to splurge, we went for Mateus Rose.

Rosé passes white wine as France's favourite

I thought you were talking about Rosie O'Donnell.

I thought, that sure sounds like the French.

Yes indeedy. I am not a sweet wine drinker by any stretch of the imagination -- give me a dark, dry red any day. The dryer the better.

However, a local wine shop owner, sold me a rose' a few months ago that impressed me.

Now, growing up in the 70s -- when Rose was a syruppy, overly-sweet blended monstrosity (usually marketed with commercials featuring hip, beautiful people in caftans and medallions) naturally I had reservations.

What I found was a delightfully dry, strangely floral (can't describe it as fruity) light wine. Lovely.

Rosé, long dismissed by purists as uncultured plonk

Say it isn't so. Vin rosé IS uncultured plonk. I gave up drinking French wine when they stabbed us in the back, but it's sad to think that the French have lost their good taste as well as their loyalty to friends and their sacred honor.

Chacun à son goût, indeed. If French wines and cheeses fall into the gutter of bad taste, what will be left of la belle France?

People in the US have this image of French wine as all being high-end and expensive. But that’s not really true. The French drink wine like Americans drink beer- most of the stuff you buy there is the wine equivalent of Budweiser- reasonably priced and not terribly distinctive. Here in the US, there are plenty of high-end beers, but few people drink Anchor Steam or Dogfish Head every night, either.

I lived off of cheap wine, baguettes, brie cheese and crepes when I spent a summer at the Sorbonne (and strangely dropped about 15 pounds due to all the walking).

France is moving to the right, if Sarkozy is in power long enough France will be filled with Ruth’s Criss steakhouses and bold red wines, maybe NASCAR can hold a race there.
