Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said in interview excerpts released Friday that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden should be executed, if he is ever captured alive.
The Illinois Senator told CNN that the accused mastermind of the September 11 attacks in 2001 should face the full weight of US and global justice.
"I am not a cheerleader for the death penalty," Obama said.
"I think it has to be reserved for only the most heinous crimes, but I certainly think plotting and engineering the death of 3,000 Americans justifies such an approach."
"I think this is a big hypothetical, though -- let's catch him first," he said.

The chances that Osama will ever be in the hands of America - alive, is so slim that he can say anything he wants about him........
So basically it is just one more in a long line of political statements that mean nothing.

No surprise — I mean with all the intentional and unintentional name mix-ups between Obama and Osama I am sure Obama wants to make this personal.

How? Should we just shoot him on site?
Should he be tried first? Where — in American courts, in Military Tribunals? Should he have the right to counsel? Should he have the right to discover the information collected by the FBI and CIA regarding his crimes? What if we cannot meet the burden of proof with unclassified information? What if he is acquitted? Should we release him? Should we release him and assassinate him? Should we execute him anyway? If so — why have a trial?
What about the time between capture and trial/execution? Should he be interrogated? How heavily? Are we talking Amnesty International, or Jack Bauer running the interrogation?
What about his Constitutional rights?
Obama hasn’t the foggiest clue what he’s talking about.
