Anti-Illegal Immigration Sign Drawing Criticism

A local man is drawing criticism after driving around town with an anti-illegal immigration sign mounted on a trailer.

The sign reads "Build the wall, deport them all," and Davi Rodriguez says it's part of an attempt to educate residents on illegal immigration.

Davi drives the sign up and down the streets of Sacramento where day laborers wait for work, sometimes videotaping the reactions and uploading them to YouTube. Workers we talked to say they feel harassed, and they're losing jobs.

"The people who come down here to hire us go away," said one worker, who did not wish to be identified. "They don't want to get caught in the middle."

"I call it the finger-and-thumb ride," Davi said. "I never know which I'm going to get, but it will be one of those: thumbs up, thumbs down, or the finger."

Davi has been assaulted, yelled at, and even had his sign vandalized on Wednesday at a stop light. He seemed surprised to hear that some of the day laborers described the sign as harassment.

"Everybody has different thresholds for that," he said.

Not everybody supports Davi's message.

"It's just ignorance," said Ricardo Mata. "Most of the people coming here are contributing to the economy."

Critics we talked to still agreed that Davi has the right to express his opinion, even if they don't agree with it.

Davi's sign is part of an effort to promote the group Save Our State, who engages in aggressive activism on the issue of illegal immigration.

Any particular reason you didn’t include the Sacramento byline? I find it useful to know where things are happening.

They said he’s “taunting” and “harassing” the illegals?! Unbelievable!

Gotta give this guy a lot of credit! Very few people are willing to take the time and risk to do what he’s doing. And the best part is, it’s working!

How long will it take for us to realize they are not nor do they intend to listen to us?

Its gonna take blunt political force, or worse, to get done what most Americans clearly want done.

It's gonna take another Eisenhower.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

Then on June 17, 1954, what was called "Operation Wetback" began. Because political resistance was lower in California and Arizona, the roundup of aliens began there. Some 750 agents swept northward through agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Another 488,000, fearing arrest, had fled the country.

By mid-July, the crackdown extended northward into Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, and eastward to Texas.

By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily.

Unlike today, Mexicans caught in the roundup were not simply released at the border, where they could easily reenter the US. To discourage their return, Swing arranged for buses and trains to take many aliens deep within Mexico before being set free.

Tens of thousands more were put aboard two hired ships, the Emancipation and the Mercurio. The ships ferried the aliens from Port Isabel, Texas, to Vera Cruz, Mexico, more than 500 miles south.

The sea voyage was "a rough trip, and they did not like it," says Don Coppock, who worked his way up from Border Patrolman in 1941 to eventually head the Border Patrol from 1960 to 1973.

WRONG. It’s just illegal. He’s the one who’s ignorant.

"Build the wall, deport them all"

Simple, logical, and correct. Well, deporting is a formative task, but it could easily be accomplished by cutting off the free ride that illegals have been enjoying at the expense of US citizens.
