Gag order issued for CBS reporter’s man
The Kerrville Daily Times ^ | July 11, 2008 | By Caleb Chapman

Kerrville Texas - A bitter divorce trial slated to begin in a Kerr County courtroom in late August between Joseph and Kimberly Burkett already is making national headlines.

Public interest in the case grew when CBS’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Lara Logan, announced she was pregnant.

The father, she claims, is Joseph Burkett of Kerrville. Their relationship began while Logan was on assignment in Iraq, where Burkett was stationed as a federal contractor, according to news reports.

The relationship reportedly began shortly after Logan broke off another relationship with a fellow journalist last November. Burkett and Logan apparently met years earlier when both worked in Afghanistan.

According to court documents, Joseph Burkett and his wife, Kimberly have been separated since July 2008. Joseph Burkett filed a petition for divorce in January.

During Thursday’s hearing, 198th District Judge Karl Prohl issued a gag order requiring Joseph and Kimberly Burkett to remain quiet about the case after a media frenzy involving the National Enquirer, The Washington Post and the front page of the New York Post.

Logan is involved in a divorce of her own from her estranged husband, Jason Siemon. The divorce is expected to be final in about two weeks.

Logan told the Washington Post that she and Burkett plan to wed.

At stake in the Burkett divorce is the couple’s 3-year-old daughter. Joseph Burkett is seeking to be appointed managing conservator of the child.

Kimberly Burkett’s attorney Susie Chmielowiec was quoted in The National Enquirer saying, “Kimberly believes Lara stole her husband — and now they’re trying to steal her little girl.”

Chmielowiec denied Thursday that she was interviewed by the tabloid. She testified during a hearing that she was called by someone from the magazine but was asked only to confirm certain information.

In a separate story in The Enquirer, Kimberly Burkett claimed Logan is responsible for wrecking her marriage.

Kimberly, an aspiring model who lives in Fredericksburg, told the grocery-store-shelf tabloid that everything was going well until Joseph went to Iraq, saying he came home in January and “everything was OK.”

“The next morning, Joe told me, ‘I’ve met someone. Her name is Lara Logan,’” she was quoted in The Enquirer.

Logan is considered a rising star in television news and was promoted last week within the CBS organization.

She told the Washington Post that she became pregnant in April, shortly before leaving Baghdad and that the pregnancy was unplanned.

The divorce trial between the Burketts has been set for Aug. 19.

This story in the Washington Post a couple of days ago about this was a disgrace. I cannot believe they are providing these people with positive coverage. Just what I wanted to read about while eating breakfast.

Indeed. Seems like she was sleeping around a lot in Iraw without "protection" (and we know the type I'm talking about!). Her comment in the Washington Post story that she didn't think she could get pregnant sounds like that of a 15-year old.

i beg to differ. For one thing, "long in the tooth" is a reference to old age, which is derived from the phenomenon of gums receding as one gets older, making the teeth appear longer. She does not look all that old to me. Secondly, I don't know which bars you go to, but she would be attractive at 9:00 pm in all the bars I frequent. You must be one of those really good-looking movie star types to be as choosy as you appear to be. And finally, FR guys have really good taste in women. This woman is definitely NOT GUILTY.

I really disagree about that last statement. I'm in my 50's, and she looks darn attractive to me. You may be turned off by her lack of morals, but that has nothing to do with her physical attractiveness. Disclaimer: I am not necessarily representative of all FR men, except that I am capable of determine from purely superficial features a woman's relative attractiveness. I personally could care less about her morals. If a guy doesn't want a woman to get pregnant, he should have a vasectomy, or use a condom, or abstain.

This woman is at least 8.5 on the Budweiser scale, approching 9, in my opinion. For those unfamiliar with the Budweiser scale, it refers to the number of Clydesdales it would take to (I can't really say this here, family forum, you know.)

Well, to be clear, I am not evaluating her lack of morals. I think she is a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale, maybe 7.25. She isn’t young and that shaves a bit off rating her looks. She was probably a better looker when she was younger, I will admit that, and could rate approaching an 8.

I am 40 and don’t give 10s. The highest I ever have given is a 9.5 or so, and that’s for a young Sophia Loren. I dispute many people’s use of the scale, as I consider a 5 to be ‘average’ and I consider ‘average’ to be pleasant looking, not a pejorative at all. As such, I am a tougher grader on the higher and lower ends of the scale.

Keep in mind that we all have our individual tastes. This chick is a 7+ in my book nowhere near a 8.5. There are cocktail waitresses at the Palms in Las Vegas who are a lot better looking than her.

From what I can see from the family photos, Kim Burkett is FAR more beautiful that the reporter. Pretty is as pretty does - and in this case, the wife’s pretty landed on the outside and the inside.

I pray for all the children involved in this case, and hope that his wife finds healing with another, more worthy man.

So let me get this straight:

Joseph Burkett (federal contractor)
Kimberly Burkett (wife, an aspiring model who lives in Fredericksburg) “separated since July 2008” (that is this month). “filed a petition for divorce in January.” That would be 6 months ago. So they petitioned for divorce and only just now separated. “The relationship reportedly began shortly after Logan broke off another relationship with a fellow journalist last November.’

“everything was going well until Joseph went to Iraq, saying he came home in January and ‘everything was OK.’” ...Except Lara had already met her husband years before in Afghanistan.

Lara Logan (pregnant reporter) “The father, she claims, is Joseph Burkett of Kerrville.” “She told the Washington Post that she became pregnant in April, shortly before leaving Baghdad and that the pregnancy was unplanned.”
Jason Siemon (Lara Logan’s husban) “The divorce is expected to be final in about two weeks.” “The relationship reportedly began shortly after Logan broke off another relationship with a fellow journalist last November.”

“Logan is considered a rising star in television news and was promoted last week within the CBS organization.”

The chronology of this this way all out of whack and I had a hard time discerning who/what/when/where... and just who was trying to get custody of the kid and who’d been wronged in that situation. NOW I can see. But that article needed an editor. It gave me a headache to think about it.
