They did it!

High school students fighting anti-military bigotry in the Bay Area collected 13,600 signatures and submitted them to save the JROTC program in San Francisco. (I blogged about their signature-gathering efforts last month here.)

Keep the counterinsurgency going.

One or more of these young people might end up as an important political figure as a result of having taken and held this stand. Holding your own in a political windstorm at a tender age is great training.

For now. As the scumdog that led the fight against JROTC said:

"As a gay man and as president of the Board of Education, that's the main reason" for opposing JROTC, Sanchez said.

He said that even if the measure is approved in November, he would consider voters' 2005 opposition to military recruitment in the schools as a better indication of their views on the subject.

He doesn't care what the people think.

You are demanding she join the military because she supported letting school children join JROTC? That is stupid.

As a person who knows something about school administration, I see this self-serving jackass as the absolute antithesis of what a board member should be. He is forcing his PERSONAL views/values on an entire school district!! The parents in the district should tar and feather him!

Additionally, the limp di*k has chosen a false thesis for his argument. The military DOES NOT tell its members they cannot be gay. They only tell them they cannot advertise their sexual preference. Personally, I don't see that an individual's sexual preference is anyone else's business anyway.

I agree. the worst part is that these kids went door to door all around the city and got support from people on both sides of the issue:

The students said they had found broad support from the political right and left alike.

"A lot of people said they were anti-military and anti-JROTC, but they said they wanted students to have a choice," said Neal Jaranilla, 16, who will be a junior at Balboa High School this fall. He spent the past five weeks collecting signatures.

And this guy has to try to stop it because as a gay person, it offends him. To validate his lifestyle, he just has to stick it to these kids. His ego must be enormous. I wish these kids the best of luck! (All quotes are from the article MM linked.) Sorry ma'am, nothing directed at you. I just had to vent :)

Many of us don’t support sending women into combat. Like me. I find it indefensible.

Can I still support JROTC or am I a giant hypocrite now?

Absolutely no offense taken. I sometimes think these left wingers/flaming gays commit to idiotic causes like this just to get their name in the news. Surely, if this is an educated man, he realizes how flawed is his thesis.

The JROTC is a great program. I simply cannot understand why anyone who claims to be committed to young people, and their education, would oppose it.

Folks,

On one hand, I'm glad to see the students standing up to the Board of Supervisors. And I really think the JROTC is a great thing.

But, in San Francisco the JROTC has been controlled by one ethnic group for a long time, and the discrimination and racism is embedded there is extreme and absolutely disgusting. I speak from experience as a graduate of the SFUSD.

This is not to say that all or most of the JROTC members do these things. But this is one ROTC program that needs to die, just not for the reasons that the Board of Supervisors have in mind.
