English First Executive Director Jim Boulet, Jr., today called upon Senator Barack Obama to reconsider his anti-English statements.
Senator Obama has voted against official English four times in 2006 and 2007 and earned an "F" rating for English First in 2006.
"Senator Obama, there are plenty of languages spoken in America. What makes Spanish so special, instead of, say, Chinese or Arabic," said Jim Boulet, Jr., Executive Director of English First.
"What next, Senator? Will you be saying that too many Americans are bitterly clinging to our English language? Why does it seem you are always looking down your nose at the rest of us?"
"It is one thing to dislike America. It is another thing altogether to dislike America while seeking America's highest office," Boulet said.

As a child I spoke two languages and now that I live in the States I have lost some of my ability to speak spanish. Every time I am overseas I regret not knowing more languages.
My kids, however, have two languages down pat and that skill has helped them is school a great deal.
We in America shy away from learning other languages and that is a huge mistake.
No, we will have to win without any help from the GOP or the candidate. Lets just keep exposing BHO and get people to vote against him instead of for McCain.

The ability to speak multiple languages provides one with more avenues of thinking through processes and solving problems.
Students that primarily english speakers and at a very early age begin to learn a second language score higher on achievement tests than students that only speak one language.

While we trade with China, we are sending office jobs doing R&D and phone support to India. If you live or work in America, you will be on the phone with someone in India. Knowing the local language could help.
I believe Obama is toast in Nov. Its going to be a slaughter, no matter who he gets as VP. Just wish we had a better candidate who will end up sitting in the oval office than McCain. But I believe McCain is going to win by a huge margin.

Is the problem that he’s thinking out his answer in 2-5 languages?
Obama’s messages that “you can’t go on living as you choose” and “you will be required to give service to government sanctioned programs” etc are not going to sit well with the masses.

I’m foreign born. My first language was german. I still speak german. But where I now live, the first language is english.
Thus, I speak the FIRST language of the country in which I live.
You do understand the difference between being multi-lingual as an individual, and the first language of a country, surely?

Learning another language is fine but not learning another language is not a huge mistake. In some aspects of international business a definite plus. I came from the generation when foreign language requirement was dropped.
It’s a regret.
English as the language of America is the issue. why pander to a third world country, Mexico, when their population here in the states resists assimilation?

I am the same as you but spanish was my first language and then when I moved to the States I learned english.
Now English is my dominant language.
And yes, if you live in the USA it is best that you speak english. However, when I have been in Mexican areas of Texas or Greek areas of Chicago or Polish of Chinese areas of New York and met people that have spent their entire life in the U.S. and still do not know english..
Probably something they speak in Malaysia. Somebody ought to hit him with some questions in it during prime time around, say, October.
Go to Greektown in Chicago and you will find people that have lived there for generations and can hardly speak english.

My son-in-law, who was born and raised Pakistani, but who is now an American citizen, says that people in India speak Urdu now a lot more than Hindi (and there are also a lot more languages in India, I think). Is he correct? I would welcome comments from others on FR who are familiar with this subject.

We haven't had a language problem because 99% of the population can communicate in a common language, which, for us, happens to be English. It's our good fortune that English is also probably the single most widely understood language on Earth today.
If "58 states" Hussein and the 'Rats in general don't comprehend all this, ignorance, stupidity and an ideological Left Wing anti-Western bias are all contributing in various proportions. We shouldn't share in this idiocy.
1) Its not that Obama is just such a unstoppable powerhouse, its mostly because he was running against one of the most unliked & unelectable candidates ever to run, Hillary.
Obama was just slightly less unelectable. Standing next to Hitlery, the guy looked like the prom king.
2) Now that Hillary is out of the picture, your begining to see screw up after screw up by him. Its amatuer hour with Obama. The guy speaks like Barney Fife without his teleprompter handy. I predict mistake after mistake by his campaign like traveling to the middle-east and europe to give speeches in the middle of a presidential campaign and those moments he has to apologize will be happening over and over again with frequency.
3) The MSM might be inlove with the guy, but that doesn’t guarantee you automatically win. The MSM did everything it could to back Kerry. Look at what happened.

Isn’t taking a foreign language class a requisite in schools any longer?
Well, here’s another thing about which this empty suit has no clue.
There’s a reason most Americans don’t go out of their way to learn other languages. All around the world, people learn English. Because they want to.
Just as at one time in human history, French was the language of the world (at least the part of it that wanted to communicate at a certain level), English is a global language now.
Anyone who has ever spent years learning a language, only to go to Europe or Asia and have a bunch of people dying to speak English to them, knows this fact very well. Today and for the foreseeable future, English is the language of business, of entertainment, of technology. We don’t make the rest of the world learn English; they do that all by themselves.
And if we had to learn some other language to do what we wanted to do in the world, we would. Duh.
But we don’t. Sure there are minor inconveniences on the individual level for English-only speakers, but for most people they don’t rise to the level of requiring the investment it takes to learn another language. For those who do need to learn another language, of course they do so (assuming they can).
If someone wants to learn another language for the sake of learning, or for some personal reason, that’s beautiful. But it’s simply not necessary to know any language but English almost anywhere in the world today.
(BTW, that woman whining on Rush today about how she spoke French and was ashamed of her fellow Americans while traveling in Europe should have been hung up on.)
