It is my understanding that people who decided to follow the literal bloodline of Joseph Smith, to his son, etc. refused to consider that Heavenly Father might decide to bestow his authority through an Elder in the church. Kind of like Moses being followed by Joshua, instead of Moses's sons. God Chooses whom He chooses. Man may choose whom he wishes, but it doesn't mean God chooses that person. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the FLDS can follow whom ever they choose. But as for me and my house, we will follow the Lord. After all, it is a free country. Any one can believe what they want. Let God decide..... Yellow Roses

Man may choose whom he wishes, but it doesn't mean God chooses that person. Which is the exact reason I don't believe Mormon prophets speak for God and that Joseph Smith was a fraud.
