TAMPA - TAMPA - Robert Cash Jr. said he felt like somebody was targeting his Palma Ceia home.
About two weeks ago, he found a claw hammer covered with a rag in a backyard flower bed. Last week, he saw the gate to his wooden privacy fence in the 4100 block of West San Luis Street had been opened. He secured it with a new lock.
"It was obvious something was about to happen," recalled Cash, 40. "You don't know what to think."
About 2:50 a.m. Saturday, everything gelled. Tampa police said Cash surprised a man who had tunneled under a neighbor's fence carrying a blowtorch and shimmied onto Cash's property.
Cash said he greeted the intruder with a .357 Magnum after being awakened by the family dog, a 4-year-old male Chihuahua named Odie.
"You just don't take chances," Cash said. "This guy was hell-bent on breaking into my house."
Cash's wife called 911 while Cash kept the man at bay. Cash said he fired once at the man after he did not obey Cash's commands to stay still; the bullet went into the fence.

Score one for the good guys.
Can’t understand why he needed a dog AND a gun... that viscious savage canine warrior should have been able to cause the burglar to melt with fear.
*ducks under desk*
LOL
The gun was just for backup, dontcha know?
A big mistake IMHO.
This guy will be out of jail soon, and possibly bent on revenge.
Always aim for the center of mass.
One of my favorite shows of all times. Life was so simple back then.
They may not be a great physical deterrant, but they do make LOTS of noise.
She’s a beauty, too. Smart and good looking, an unbeatable combination!
A chichuahua and a .357? Not bad, but I’ll take my American Bulldog and shottie anyday. woof!
The Chihuahua is a demon dog from hell. Every one I’ve met thought they were 200 pounds of pure mean.
Cash should be arrested for poor marksmanship.
He is in need of instruction and serious range time!
This is just Bizarre. What was this dirtbag thinking? “I’m going to tunnel under a fence and cut my way into a residence with a blowtorch . . .”
This for a tv, a computer, and a sack of tchotzkes that might go for a hundred bucks at a pawn shop after he gives his name, address, and photo id to the pawn broker. It’s not exactly news that you can use deadly force on the thief in this situation. The burglar should be committed. Something has come unhooked up there.
Hey, getting a job is so much trouble. ;)
Nice story.
Just ‘a little to the left’ of having a happy ending.
Carolyn

I think I need a bigger tunnel!
Many crooks are not smart. We had a guy cut a hole throught the roof of a pawn shop where I live. He jumped through the hole and severly cut his arm on a display case. His plan was to exit the back door (there wasn’t one). The crook left blood all over the store. He got guns and jewelry and tried to climb back out. The crook got out but had to leave most of the loot. The police followed his blood trail to his house and arrested him first thing the next day!
...and “dead men tell no tales.”
If a Chihuahua ever bites me and I find out about it, I’m gonna be upset.
I suspected they were 'over-socialized' when the delivery man walked into the house and put the salt in the basement without me even knowing!!
Burglars don’t tend to get into revenge. It crimps their careers.Burglars are sneaky and not very brave. They just want to get some nice loot without a fight. If they have to fight, they go somewhere else next time.
The only dog that ever did me any damage was a Chihuahua that tried to eat up my hand when I, at 10, said “nice doggie.”
nor do they sue.
Yeah, but their families do. How many times have you seen the low-rent obese mother and sisters of some dead miscreant go on TV, wailing and screaming about how wonderful their son/brother/nephew/cousin was and it will take ten million bucks to console them in their grief?
I’ve had a number of large fierce-looking dogs of breeds that are supposed to be protective. They were all marshmallows, completely worthless for home defense. The best watchdog I ever had is my current one, who weighs only 35 pounds but screams his head off if anyone comes near the house and has already demonstrated his willingness to take a piece out of any man who bothers me. It’s a good feeling. Better a real bite than a loud but fake bark.
Some years back I read of a classified ad that offered to give away a big German Shepherd.
A caller asked why, and kept pressing the owner. The owner finally fessed up that he bought the dog to guard his shop after he suffered repeated burglaries. Sure enough, within a few days the shop was burgled. The dog slept through the burglary and woke up in time to bite the investigating sheriff.
A Chihuahua is insulted when called a “nice doggie” - unless it’s right after it chewed some’s foot off.
The gun is to shoot the guy with if he harms the dog.....:-)
At my former place of employment we had a regular customer who would come in with his Yorkie and one day he told me a story about his dog .
His neighbor had a very well trained German Shepard that would not normally leave the property for any reason.
Except that his Yorkie decided it would be fun to start attacking the Shepard .When the Shepard had enough of this and went after the Yorkie the Yorkie would run back to his masters driveway and bark at the Shepard from underneath the safety of his masters VW beetle.
One day the Shepard had had enough of this nonsense and decided he would follow the little dog under the car and there he promptly got himself stuck underneath the rear axle.
Then the Yorkie decided to take advantage of the situation and chewed off three quarters of the Shepard's right ear.You can image what a mess it became after that Animal control was called lawyers were called neighbors became enemies but in the end nothing ever happened , animal control pointed out that the Shepard was unleashed and on off his property when the poor Shepard was victimized by this dangerous Yorkie
