Sen. Barack Obama is the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. So why is he "black"?
He is, to be accurate, biracial, equally black and white. Mr. Obama could choose to identify himself in a way similar to golfer Tiger Woods, who describes himself as "Cablinasian" a mix of his Caucasian, black and American Indian father and his Asian mother (although "Kensan" or "Kanyan" don't have the same ring).
Or Mr. Obama could label himself with obvious legitimacy as white - he was, after all, raised by his white mother and white grandparents after his father abandoned the family when he was 2 years old.
Yet he describes himself as black, and news organizations around the world have followed suit.
The Associated Press said June 3, when the Democratic candidate secured enough delegates to win the nomination, that the biracial senator is "the first African-American to lead a major party ticket" as he seeks to become "the nation's first black president."
But a debate over the topic of race has been raging since he entered the presidential race a year ago. Throughout the primary campaign, political pundits have addressed the question of whether Mr. Obama is "black enough." (A Google search of the candidate's name and the phrase pulls down 152,000 hits.)

Ferraro was absolutely right. This empty suit, with 143 days of experience in the Senate before deciding he was ready to be President, would never have been taken seriously if he were white.
“American” would be nice. Of course, that would decidedly exclude the “dreams of my father” (which decidedly excluded the existence of the son).
The same people who decided to call Tiger Woods black, despite the fact that he's 1/2 East Asian, 1/4 black, 1/8 American Indian, and 1/8 (white) Dutch.
Many American blacks consider anyone with even a small fraction of black ancestry black. ...except for those they don't like.
Changing the sheets and pillowcases is always a confusing time of day.
It's rare to find a person who isn't mixed in some way.
Half French/half American Iroquois thus... American mutt...
Obama himself decided to be called "black" by becoming obsessed over perceived racial slights or made up inequities.
If Obama had chosen to correct all writers right from the start, he would now be referred as the biracial candidate.
As it is, he believes he can gain more political ground by identifying with and joining up with the opressed slave mentality.
equal parts of white and black mixed usually look gray...
How’s that post racial thing working out.
Because he is black. If his skin was "white" (Caucasian color), and if he still called himself black, you could legitimately ask your question. But suppose Obama, with his black skin, called himself white. Imagine how much flak he'd receive from blacks for dissing his black genes. What's the guy to do?
EXACTLY!!
It’s screwy out there. Reminds me a colleague who got an interview mainly because he was “African born”-—that’s what it said on his application and it was true—he was born in Morocco — but he was as white as the driven snow.
Another case was an applicant who had a very “latino” sounding name..we were advised strongly to hire her...even though she was born in Spain!
Because the leftists use the same system as Hitler. Black genes are considered to fully contaminate the person. So just as Hitler saw a person with one Jewish grandparent as Jewish, Democrats see a person with one black grandparent as 100% black.
The first court case of a white skinned person claiming minority status based on one officially black grandparent should be interesting.
As a black, he gets 92% of the black vote.
I agree. Actor John Wayne had this to say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fuzLTrwVbc
Obama is not black, he is brown, as most American "blacks" are. I've worked with black sub-saharan Africans, and they are jet black. A black you just don't see in America.
My daughter has apparently got a bit of coloring from a great grandmother who was Cherokee. She is darker in complexion than one of her friends who's father is Puerto Rican. Guess which one will be considered a minority.
As justice Roberts said, if we desire that people stop being discriminated against by race, we should stop discriminating by race.
If Obama had chosen to correct all writers right from the start, he would now be referred as the biracial candidate.
As it is, he believes he can gain more political ground by identifying with and joining up with the opressed slave mentality.
I'm confused. Is Obama black or isn't he? Maybe he's black on Monday Wednesday and Friday and not Tuesday and Thursday. Maybe he shifts depending on the way the political winds blow.
The one drop rule may not be in effect any more, but the fifty percent rule is. Halle Berry is another example. In any case, when anyone looks at him, they see “black,” not “white”.
Looks more Arab to me than anything. (or are we not supposed to say that?)
I thought he was mullato. It’s a word you never hear anymore.
Tiger Woods has “class”.
Barack Obama has “class warfare”.
There is a big difference.
PS: Tiger’s late father was a highly decorated Green Beret in Vietnam.
Barack’s father was a communist from Kenya.
There is a big difference!
It’s no wonder some people call Obama, “The Magic Mulatto” - he can have the best of both worlds.
Mocha Obama!
Or maybe burnt sienna, or raw umber. What difference does it make what precise shade he is? The fact is that strangers perceive him as "not white." He grew up with that and knows what it feels like to be treated like a black person. I'm not saying that he's not capitalizing on his skin color. I'm just saying that in terms of his life experience, he's a black man.
My youngest daughter, born of me (absolute wasp) and my beloved (sicilian/calabrian), was born with a very obvious “mongolian bruise”
google it, friends.
Lo and behold, even though the bruise faded in childhood, in adolescence her hair became so curly/frizzy that she was teased by classmates.
It suggests that somewhere way back when, there might be :::gasp::: some “black” blood in the ancient ancestors. Most likely is the southern italian heritage, but who knows who got sent to Scotland, right? Sicily and Calabria were very close to the trading routes, but the Romans hung out in the English Isles way back as well.
At the same time, my husband has certain physical characteristics that link him to Norman nobility.
So what, and who cares about anything but her character.
You should see me hollering every time Obama is called black. “He ain’t black, he’s mulatto!”...lol
Now today Obama wants us to believe he is actually French but we know that he is still and Arab wannabe.
Could Obamas color be Chameleon to appease liberal airheads.
lol...no kidding? (I wasn't comparing the character of the two, obviously).
Of note, as is so typical, Obama’s father abandoned Obama as a mere infant to pursue other women and his actual wife and children he had previously abandoned in Kenya. It also appears Obama’s father was Arab as opposed to black as alleged. Obama’s white grandparents ended up raising him. Why does he now throw them under the bus? What is the truth with this camelion, is he just a common con artist?
I guess that makes Obama Caukenyan.
Lets just focus on Obama’s qualifications to be PO**S!
OBAMA has NONE:-) Zero, Nada
Tiger refuses to accept being called black, because he says “it means my mother doesn’t exist”.
Obama presents himself as black because he knows the blacks will vote for him nearly 100% without question, and most of the white liberals will only think about it for two seconds.
Many of those whites are so worried about being called racist that they’d rather help elect a big nothing like Obamessiah than stay home or vote for someone else. I have seen this “white guilt” all around me for years and I’m sick of it.
Perhaps, as some say, once in the voting booth there might be some surprises in store. When no one is watching, who will everyone REALLY vote for? We shall see!
Obama is a Mulato. Period. That he chose to identify with his skin color rather than his heritage for whatever the reason, is sad. He could bring more credibility by saying that he is an “American” who happens to be mixed. Everyone can see he is Black in color, just as folks see me as White. But if asked, I answer truthfully and with respect to ALL my relatives. I am White and American Indian (Delaware and Cherokee).
He’s supposed to say he is mixed, or Mulatto. Simple.
Isn’t it interesting that no one thinks that there could be Whites from Kenya? Yes, his father happened to be Black. I’m just saying.
Well, most Puerto Ricans and Dominicans are racially mixed like Obama, but we all throw them into the idiotic “hispanic” category along with white Argentineans and indians from Guatemala.
IE Ricans, Dominicans, and Afro-Brazilians.
Obama’s father is a Luo (ie black) NOT AN ARAB (semitic). Can we stop passing around this internet urban legend!
You see Barak Husseins problem is the use of race. He decided long ago to be a black man instead of a white man. He is after all 50% white and 50% black. His black father abandoned him and his mother when he was two years old. (Common fathering technique for black baby daddies.) Barak Hussein chose to align himself with his deadbeat black father instead of his white mother and white grandmother who raised him. Could it be that he has a lack of respect for women or maybe just white women. Or could it be that as a Muslim he shares their lack of respect for women. They consider women less valuable than livestock and show them no respect whatever. Tell us Barak which is it.
It's a full-time job setting folks straight on that score, isn't it? ...lol. You've been working overtime for a while now. That urban legend spread like wildfire.
Whatever, jerk.
Him calling himself black may have something to do with affirmative action. It would be interesting to know if he benefited from aa. If so, he should not have, being the child of an African and a white American.
