Bob Barr to put Georgia, North Carolina in play for Obama?
Hot Air ^ | June 4th

Posted on 07/08/2008 2:00:47 PM PDT by mnehrling

All part of his daring master plan to make his name as widely reviled among the right as Ralph Nader’s is among the left.

Polls in Georgia and North Carolina over the last two weeks show Mr. Barr winning 8 percent and 6 percent respectively of the presidential vote, and in both cases helping keep likely Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama within striking distance of Mr. McCain in those states — which, taken together, account for more electoral votes than Florida, Pennsylvania or Ohio…

[InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt] Towery said North Carolina and Georgia are exactly the places that Mr. Barr could put in play: both have high African-American populations that Mr. Obama can tap to boost his turnout numbers, and have conservative-leaning voters whose dissatisfaction with President Bush could lead them to a third-party candidate.

The Georgia poll, taken just before Mr. Barr secured the Libertarian nomination, gave Mr. McCain 45 percent support, Mr. Obama 35 percent and Mr. Barr 8 percent. In North Carolina a Public Policy Polling survey released Monday found Mr. McCain at 43 percent, Mr. Obama at 40 percent and Mr. Barr at 6 percent. The poll’s authors said Mr. Barr’s support appeared to come particularly from independents who previously had broken for Mr. McCain.

I can understand a third-party run if, like Perot, you command a minority so sizable — 20 or 25 percent, say — that the party simply has to address some of its concerns, if not in this election then in the next. A five percent minority doesn’t do that. You can make up that amount elsewhere by doing a better job of mobilizing your base or pandering a bit to other constituencies at the margins. If you’re going to strike at the establishment, in other words, you’d better do it hard enough that the reaction is fear, not anger. How do you think libertarians will be received if this tool hands us President Obama? Exit question: On which issues, precisely, do Barr and Ron Paul propose to compromise with the 95% of Republicans who aren’t voting for them? They’re each trying to bring the GOP around to more libertarian positions, Barr by spoiling McCain’s chances and Paul by trying to work within the party for now and land a role at the convention. Surely they understand that there’ll be some give and take involved in reaching an accommodation with more centrist/hawkish conservatives. Yet Paul’s philosophy, in which every last position is presented as the one and only acceptable constitutional solution, makes that impossible. You have to do exactly what he wants, because that’s what the Constitution wants and there can be no compromise where the supreme law of the land is concerned. So how does this play out? If the GOP decides, sure, let’s give the gold standard a second look, what does America’s Greatest Patriot give back?

What idiots! It's got nothing to do with President Bush, it's total dissatisfaction with McCain that is leading people to third party candidates.

The problem with the third party candidates this go around is it is like leaving the nut house to enter the insane asylum. Jeeze, Barr or Baldwin? Might as well have Alex Jones or Jesse Duplantis as options.

"Bob Barr John McCain to put Georgia, North Carolina in play for Obama?"

Better question: Does he (McCain) actually have to run with Juan Hernandez or Vicente Fox on the ticket as Veep before people wake up to reality?

Does Obama have to actually enact his new marxism for people to realize what a crossroads this is?

Who knows, maybe Barr can also run with Hernandez.. Barr was the one who, in his position with the ACLU, fought to prevent local and State law enforcement agencies from being able to prosecute illegals.

I say let ‘em turn the pot all the way up and see if a few of the frogs notice. McCain’s brand of government is still big-government Socialism, and no less dangerous to our continued existence as a sovereign republic.

I’m not too worried about Bob Barr. He has been out of the spotlight for almost 10 years, and has been a stooge of the ACLU.

For the record: I can’t vote for Barr, either. Too much ACLU stink on him. I’m a Presidential no-vote.

That being said, blaming a McCain loss (if it even comes to pass) on the ones who refused to follow the rest of the lemmings over the cliff is a non-starter.

What is Barr's reason for entering this race when he has absolutely no chance of winning? Doesn't he remember Perot's ruining GHW Bush's chance to be reelected and giving us 8 years of that POS Billy Blythe? Oops, maybe he does. He might tilt the table enough to elect Obama and, mark my word, that would be far worse that enduring those F’ng Clintons.
If any freepers out there have any savings or 401Ks or IRAs, may I remind you that Obama is planning to tax them (on a one time basis) anywhere between 10 and 15%. He (Hussein)must be stopped! What respect I once had for Barr has just been flushed down the toilet.

Would he really be able to do this all by himself? I thought there would still be a congress, even in an Obama administration, and more than likely more than 40 Republican Senators. I'm thinking that for Obama to do this, or one of hundreds of other nightmare actions some claim he will/could do if elected, he would need not only the support of Congress but even the support of some Republicans.

Obama's a pathetic candidate but he does not, and will not, have the power some imbue him with.

Alex Jones or Jesse Duplantis as options.

Sure, with McCain as the alternative. McCain is not conservative. He is merely less of a leftist. I'm not compromising ideals ever again. If the GOP or the left-headed GOP voters want me to go along, they must choose a centrist at the very least.

Even though I probably will not vote for Barr, the people that put a POS like McCain in as the GOP candidate, are directly responsible for why Barr can take votes from the GOP. Perhaps the GOP needs to do a whole lot of soul searching.

I guess they can't do that. They corner the market on the stupidity that will usher Obama into office.

Why, 99.99% of the time the choice is always between the lesser of two evils. Not only are we dealing with humans, who by nature are evil, but we are dealing with the most vile form of human- politicians. It is a rare opportunity to vote for positive reasons. The most we can hope for in any election is to vote for the person who will do the least damage and whom you may have the most leverage.

We are 100% guaranteed to not have any leverage with Obama. At least with McAmnesty, we have some leverage through our party donations and party pressure. We also are pretty much guaranteed that our side will not hold the House or Senate in the next election, having the presidency at least gives us a small percent of a block.

Most importantly, in 2010, the new census takes place and congressional lines are redistricted. We need to have some leverage in there some place. If we don't control either the legislative or executive branch during this crucial time, we are guaranteed to not have any leverage in the redistricting process, thus we will lose power for far longer than we can imagine.

Yea, McCain sucks, but I will take any small amount of leverage I can get. McCain is also old which lessens his chance of running in 2012, thus, our second chance is closer than with a young Obama at the helm.

I guess you've forgotten the Clinton administration, brought to us by Ross Perot. Here's just one part of the Clinton legacy: Clinton's Energy Secretary, Hazel O'Leary, declassified eleven million pages of nuclear documents, including reports on 204 U.S. nuclear tests, describing the move as an act to safeguard the environment and a protest against a "bomb-building culture." Thanks to the Marxists she surrounded herself with, security at the national labs was gutted, allowing China to gain access to critical information.

Given the kind of loonies that Obama associates with, there is every reason to believe that his appointments would be even more outrageous than Clinton's.

Every vote for Barr is a vote for Obama--and the kind of people he is likely to put in offices that would have a direct effect on the security of our country, and the world.

How is that possible? I was told only loserdopians who want to smoke drugs vote libertarian. Additionally, loserdopians are only .004% of the vote and their votes are not wanted or needed. And finally, one half of loserdopians are too doped up to know the right day to vote anyway.

So why are you worried that Barr will get any McCain votes?

When did you jump on the dumbass "Paul is a racist" bandwagon? As far as I knew, you only thought some of his wingnut supporters were. Did you read the touching tribute that Paul wrote about his nearly departed Jewish campaign manager earlier in the week? I swear to God, every time I get sick enough of Barr to consider thinking about McCain, a rash of stupid FR posts pop up which make me want to just go away on vacation around election day and just keep my hands clean of anyone.

Barr is such a non-factor anyway. Obama is going to rape McCain whether or not any third-party guy is in it. Intrade has him in the mid-60's as of today. People would do much better to focus on congressional and state races this year. Between the media bias and the dopey young people obsesses with Obama, McCain is done.
