I got wind of this from John Lott's website - a Briton is advocating allowing concealed carry in the United Kingdom with requirements much similar to those of the United States.
Clayton Cramer points out:
what Graham Showell is proposing is more restrictive than British handgun laws were from 1870 (when they adopted a license to carry concealed weapons) to 1920 (when the Firearms Act pretty well limited pistol ownership to those with a really, really good reason).
Please visit and put in your real name and maybe a well-reasoned response for why you feel that way. You don't have to put your e-mail address in (make sure you uncheck the box about receiving notices) and when you submit the signature, you will be asked to donate to the online petition website, but that is NOT a requirement of the site, they just want you to think it is. Hit the back arrow key and click on "signatures" along the top of the page to see if yours made it.

It stands at 56 right now. Let's add at LEAST a hundred to it, and maybe give this guy the encouragement to take his mission a step further.
Rare activism/”unarmed” citizen ping!
Banglist/FreepThisPoll power ping!
Bravo! Long uphill battle ahead.
I think it was after the terrible school shooting in Scotland, my uncle, who lived north of Luton, dutifully marched down to the police station and turned in the “broomstick” Mauser his dad had brought back from WW-1 and the Luger he had brought back from WW-2 (they were both in the British Army). Some years later he commented that the local newspaper reported the “hot robberies” (the criminals break in and don’t care whether you’re home or not) had dramatically increased. Duh!
Done. Thanks for posting.
Hate to be the fly in the ointment here, but shouldn’t they be pushing to get their rights back to own handguns first? It’s going to be awfully hard to carry concealed with a Remington 870.

It does rain a lot there.. maybe they could use raincoats.
LMAO! They wont even let them carry a pocket knife I’ll just bet they OK a handgun.
Before that, the number of armed robberies per year in England could be counted on the fingers of one hand. There were no controls at all on most types of guns including machine guns and the only control on handguns was a permit which was obtained by simply going to the post office and asking for it. It was issued routinely with no investigation etc.
He’s a brave man, but I don’t think he stands a chance. I’ll be surprised if the UK government doesn’t find a way to trump up charges against him for DARING to petition the government for subjects be allowed to carry the means for self-defense.
bttt
What do you folk prefer, an officer with a handgun, shotgun and light armor that can be worn under the uniform or an officer more properly armed and armored to deal with the likes of MS-13 et al? I don’t particularly like seeing cops w/ LR autos more often, but my anecdotal evidence is just that. I also do not want them to be able to be out-gunned either. Just a basic constitutional quandary. Although a real solution would be Constitutionally sealing the border.
the Deets
I really haven’t seen much evidence that the cops are being outgunned by the likes of MS-13. There have been several arrests of MS-13 members in Charlotte over the last few days, and, other than a standoff last night with no shots fired, there haven’t been any problems.
Signed bump

“the Firearms Act pretty well limited pistol ownership to those with a really, really good reason”
And to protect your life, your family, your property and your country doesn’t qualify?
Those British armed police have ACOG scopes on their MP-5s. Those go from a few hundred to over $1000.
Put my 2cents in.Hope it goes all the way.
“Noli Me Tangere”
“cops shouldn’t need to be heavily armed anyway.”
Every time I see a picture of a heavily-armed cop I think of what the gun grabbers say - “assault weapons only purpose is to kill large numbers of people” and I wonder, is that before or after they’re read their rights?
Thanks for the heads up. Possibly Quixotic, but just signing it made me feel good.
I’m in at #72.
FREEPED!
ping!
Never bring a knife to a gunfight! :-)
BTTT
!Nunca!
I think that a police officer should be able to go down to the corner ATF and pick up an M4, just like any other citizen. And, yes, he should have to show a pictured ID. If he is paying with a credit card.
FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me if you want to be added or removed from the Fearless Poll-Freeping Freepers Ping list. And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list) (gordongekko909, founder of the pinglist, stays on the list until his ghost signs up for the list)
Signed, #88
I have nothing against police having body armor and AR-15’s or MP-5’s (or equivalent), Michael Savage made a good point to where they would need them to deal with the gang bangers and so on. However, I don’t think the citizen should be denied those tools to defend himself either.
Dave, I’m in at #114.
