The Boards action closed PUSD high school campuses at lunchtime for all students. Only third-year and fourth-year students in good standing, and with parent permission, will have the opportunity to leave campus for lunch beginning in August 2006. Based on community input, a student in good standing must have at least a cumulative 2.0 grade point average or C average and have earned enough credits to stay on track to graduate: Specifically students must earn the following:
§ 14 credits by the end of the fourth semester;
§ 18 credits by the end of the fifth semester;
§ 20 credits by the end of the sixth semester;
§ and 24 credits by the end of the seventh semester.
Parent permission to leave campus at lunchtime is good for one school year as long as the student continues to meet eligibility requirements. Grade point averages and acquired credits will be reviewed each semester in order to determine eligibility. Parents and students will need to sign a contract which authorizes students to leave campus at lunchtime, and view a presentation on safety and lunchtime procedures. This contract must be signed by both the parent and student in the presence of a school official. A schedule of dates and times of safety presentations will be sent to you from your son / daughters school.
Students with permission to leave for lunch will receive specific instructions in regard to campus procedures from their school this summer. Students must: park in designated areas, leave campus at specified exit points and show an authorized identification card issued by the school to leave.
Leaving campus for lunch is a privilege of leaving campus at lunch for the remainder of the school

Can you also list the first 200 names in the Boston white pages? Just as fascinating information, I’m sure.
This is an official statement from the school board itself.
I have an idea- why not have the school surrounded by barbed wire, electrical fenses and post armed uniformed guards around them, to make sure no one escapes.
I was fascinated by the fact that students can’t leave school for lunch without official permission. In fact, that floored me.
Many public high schools (the one near me, for ex.) don't let anybody but seniors leave the school grounds for lunch. . Their policy seems quite reasonable and mundane, to me.
I was fascinated by the fact that students CAN leave school for lunch at all. What’s up with that?
We couldn’t either, and that was (ahem) quite a while ago. Typical of huge big city institutions. I’m glad they kept us safe from In and Out Burgers and fried chicken. All the drugs and pervs were already inside the school.
We also have to notify the police.
Do you know how short the school day is ? (about 6 hours). Why should these kids be leaving school grounds at all? Those people are ridiculously lenient, as it is. If it weren’t for parents, kids would be having sex in art class, for all some of those teachers could care.
Me too. Of course, if something bad happens (either TO a student or BY a student) off campus during lunch, everybody else will be fascinated as well.
BTW, I am talking about a K-8 school, not a high school.
4 kids crashed their car on the way back to school on a lunch break a few years ago.
I believe it was two dead, two crippled.
Parents blamed the short 30 minute lunch break.
The fact that no one was wearing seat belts, they were speeding and the driver wasn’t licensed had nothing to do with it.
Closed campus now.
Quick! Johnny’s cut out for Burger King... call in the SWAT team!
YOU, Mr. and Mrs. Smith... YOU ARE IN VIOLATION OF CLAUSE 24.12 of your yearly school behavior contract! One more occurrence and it’s mandatory behavior modification “classes” for you AND your miserable off-spring!
We had a tragic case where 4 boys were driving to football practice (before school started) They were involved in a car accident and all four boys were killed. Three of the boys where from the same family.
Well, I for one, was allowed to leave for lunch, from 9th grade on.I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY, went to LaSalle High. We had a MickeyDee’s close by, full lunch 99cents. I would have to run the gauntlet of the “stoners” though, on my way back. Forty minutes was just better spent at school most days.

Well, that’s a different story, mware. Seriously, at THAT age, kids shouldn’t have cars and should absolutely be in the school, and if they’re NOT, I agree, there’s a problem.
But trying to nail High School kids for going to lunch is going too far. Hell, when I was a senior, we had the choice on whether we wanted to attend whole or half days (guess which one most kids chose!) - in which case MANY seniors would be “out for lunch” because they’d be out of school!
We couldn’t leave school 17 years ago. We did anyway, and it worked out fine until the day we decided to return through the front door. Seniors in high school, getting spanked by the principal.
That's all fine and dandy but when Junior turns 18, he becomes an adult and can decide whether to leave the campus or stay without consulting with a parent.
It is kind-of interesting - we had something of an experimental "open campus" back in the '70's and I definitely remember utilizing the open campus to my own advantage. In my senior year, I finished my classes at noon and went to work right after school. Unencumbered.
I forgot to add..........
My son, a sophmore, is NOT allowed to leave for lunch. Seniors may leave for early dismissal, only. All others must stay through the school day.

You may think we are being overly protective, but if you ever checked the sexual predator sites and see that 4 of them live in your sending district, you think twice when a kid comes up missing.
How many schools allow K-8 kids to leave school on their own for lunch anyway?
Why are you posting a story from 2006? Just curious.
Of course, my high school also had a student smoking area and the drinking age was 18. I guess we were more mature back then.
187 in my zip code...
Students being unable to leave school for lunch is something that I was unaware of. It didn’t happen when I was in school. I thought others would be surprised, as well.
Why didn't you add a dozen !!!!!!!!!!!!! to really get everyone's attention on this worthwhile story?
OK.
You had your kicks, principal got his licks. ;-)
...back in the day, I guess.
Actually, one of my collegues who teaches 7th graders use to teach in South Philly.
In the first week of school, we had a fire drill.
She was crying, and I asked her what was wrong. She said she could not believe how they walked out of the building in an orderly manner without a word.
She told me a fire drill in south philly was a free for all, and you were lucky to get the kids back in school.
This is only tangentially topical; but we have a young friend who turned down Eric Harris for a prom date; and she skipped class to go to the tanning salon over lunch period just about the time he & D. Klebold entered what would’ve been her afternoon class in the library at Columbine H.S. one day.

I walked home for lunch every day for 12 years. About 10 blocks.
I live about an hour east of peoria and this is the way it’s been for decades.
That was one lucky girl.
I live in N. Pekin.
If it’s embedded in Firefox 3.0....yes.
Otherwise, I couldn’t tell ya.
It’s a free Firefox extension add-on. Pretty neat, if you are as lazy as I am.

Reasonable? Only in communist Russia, or Nazi Germany?
That's a strange stance for someone whose screenname is *nonstatist*.
What are you doing on Free Republic?
I was not able to leave school grounds for lunch when I was in high school unless my mother or father came to pick me up --- and I graduated 30 years ago.
I just downloaded Xinha_0.95.
Close to any of that you mentioned?
...back in the day, I guess.
In my neck of the woods that ended in the 1970's with urban bussing to integrate neighborhood schools. No more lunch breaks for anyone because the students bussed across town (as either the marshmallows in the hot chocolate, like me, or the chocolate chips in the cookie, like some others) couldn't walk home.
I gained 20 pounds that year on cafeteria food.
A bit old but relevant to the recent threads about locking kids up in schools in England to monitor what they eat; all for their own good, of course.
shoulda checked the links first...
No joke the nearest high school to my home was about 6 miles away, but our township chose to be a part of the high school that was 25 miles away.
We left for school at 6;15 and since I stayed for extracurricular activities I did not get home until 7PM.
Do you have any Christie Brinkley updates to throw in; that’s a pretty prominent headline.
Damm! When it’s not your time, it’s not your time!
OK...I downloaded and unzipped the file...is there an installer?
