In Hartford, Thousands Gather To Celebrate Islam
courant.com ^ | July 6, 2008 | Matt Burgard

Posted on 07/06/2008 3:52:31 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

A woman wearing a burqa sat on a bench Saturday at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, the fabric across her face revealing only her eyes.

Next to her, a group of children chatted on cellphones and shrieked merrily over the sound of chanting music calling the assembled masses to prayers.

At the annual Islamic Circle of North America Convention, the traditional mixes easily with the modern.

"We're just like anyone else, and I think people have a hard time understanding that," said Sakina Abduss-Salaam, a New Jersey woman who strolled through the convention Saturday wearing a black-and-gold Islamic hijab dress and holding a Starbucks iced coffee.

Abduss-Salaam said she converted to Islam 18 years ago when she met her husband, a Muslim. She said the religion has shaped her life as she and her husband have raised two children and held full-time jobs in a society that sometimes views Muslims with distrust.

"It's not about terrorism or hatred. It's about love," she said. "Being a Muslim is just like being a Christian or a Jewish person. We are all called to treat each other with respect."

ARTICLE SNIPPET from the link at post no. 1:

Muhammad Tahir, a photographer from New York hired to take pictures at the convention, said the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have brought hardships and understanding for Muslim Americans.

"At first, it was hard because everyone suddenly looked at you differently," he said. "But since then, I think, more people have taken the time to learn about Islam, and now more people are educated.""

“Exclusive: Islamism and the So-called ‘Muslim Voting Bloc’: Shades of Theocracy”
M. Zuhdi Jasser

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The modus operandi for the political empowerment of Islamists in America is in full public display during every election cycle. The sad part is few realize how central “Islamic politics” is to the driving force of transnational Islamism and its threat to American security. The incessant attempts by American Islamist groups (like the MAS, CAIR, MPAC, ISNA, ICNA to name a few) to collectivize Muslims in the body politic - from voter registrations to their ideological grievance mill - point to their goals.

What better way to push forth a quasi-theocratic political agenda than to deceive the Muslim faithful into believing that their political survival as a minority in America depends upon the mixture of their faith identity with their political identity? These same Islamists spread the ideology of victimization and identity politics among any Muslims who will listen while they internally promote political Islam and Islamist statecraft within the ummah (Muslim community). They use their efforts at Muslim electoral involvement to exploit the spiritual ummah for political purposes. Most importantly, many in the mainstream media (MSM) and government turn to them to purportedly speak for the American Muslim population, even though they have no mandate or significant membership to do so.”

"Being a Muslim is just like being a Christian or a Jewish person. We are all called to treat each other with respect."

PSST, Christians and Jews don't promote destruction and the taking of innocent life in an arbitrary fashion via self promotion.

Only by necessity for survival.

Guess it all depends on how you define 'respect'. Let's add up all the stonings of women, genital mutilation, whippings, murder of gays, non-Muslims, et al. and then let's have a conversation about what 'respect' means.

Oh, and the beheadings of infidels, apostates, and anyone else they don't like.

She can take her 'respect' and stick it. The Koran allows lying and deceiving to further the cause of Allah, and that is precisely what's going on here.

Perhaps when the day comes some guys order her to strap on a suicide belt under her burka and blow up a school yard packed with kids, and she refuses, then they bury her up to her head and bash her brains in, she will have a different view. One more in line with the teachings of the prophet during his days of conquest.

Bzzzt. Wrong answer, Sakina. I wonder if she's ever asked herself why, if Islam is so respectful of others, is there such severe oppression of religious and political minorities and women in the home of Islam (Saudi Arabia). Churches and synagogues are completely outlawed. Some respect. And if/when Muslims ever gain control in Europe expect similar "respect."

Islam is a cancer that needs a global radiation treatment if civilization has any chance of surviving.

By there fruits you shall know them. A few often and perhaps overly quothed thoughts on islam:

Know islam, no peace; No islam, know peace!

If the Arabs put down their guns, there would be no more violence. If the Israelis put down their guns, there would be no more Israel.

The Pope was correct in his quote....”Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” -Manuel II Paleologus

The melting pot idea is just fine, as long as it is allowed to function as intended. In a melting pot, those objects that do not assimilate into the greater mass, remain solid but sink to the bottom. I can’t think of a better fate for Islam.

It’s unfortunate, and I hate to say it, but the ONLY thing now that is going to wake my fellow Americans up to the insidious threat that is Islam is the loss of an American city by way of a nuclear device. And only THEN if it can be directly traced to an organization that is not backed by a nation-state.

The problem is that America has never gone to battle with an ideology. It’s always been with a nation state that’s been behind an ideology or a quest for power/land. We have never battled an enemy within our own borders.

It’s going to take a shocking act to get the average American to finally understand. After that-IF enough people have the gumption to DO something about it-the government cannot ‘get in the way’ of what is necessary to eliminate the threat. It would serve the best interest of the nation, should it become necessary to do so, to let WE THE PEOPLE take care of the situation. Let our ingenuity, combined with (what would undoubtedly be) righteous rage (and perhaps a few government-supplied weapons) and “take care of the situation”.
