2,000 firefighters make a stand in Big Sur
SF Chronicle/SF Gate.Com ^ | 5 July 2008 | Demian Bulwa & John Cote

Nearly 2,000 firefighters made a stand Saturday on Highway 1, near famous inns and spas bereft of tourists on this holiday weekend, as crews sought to beat back the out-of-control Basin Complex wildfire in Big Sur in advance of a heat wave expected to start rolling into the area today.

This story is deliciously ironic. To watch the holiest of the Bedwetters' Shrines--the wellspring of the sexual revolution, the drug culture and the "gimme" entitlement culture--all go up in smoke is just too good.

It's even better that socialists' PC defense of "all things environmental" literally provided the fuel.

Can't wait until their "ecologically sensitive" coast line is dotted with oil rigs.

Hahahahahahaha liberal knuckleheads!!!!!!!!

Well I’m a conservative and Big Sur and Highway 1 is one of my favorite coastlines, I have spent a lot of time out there. Hate to see it go.

it really hasnt all gone up in smoke.....

did you hear they arrested a guy for setting his own backfires in Big Sur? I laughed for five minutes when I heard that on KFI. So controlled burns are banned for the common folk...do as I say, not as I do.

Firefighters, as much as I respect them, have never had any real say in forest fires. Back fire, nice, % under supposed control, nice, but in reality the fire will do as it damned well pleases. The firefighter is great for structures, but they have no impact on real forest fires.

Best of luck to those at risk. I love that area, but God may think it’s time for a rebirth of life.

Sorry, I don’t cheer when anyone’s home is burned (except terrorists). I share your contempt for liberal “bedwetters” but I don’t understand how you can find any enjoyment in huge wildfires consuming peoples’ homes and so much land/forest in this beautiful area.

My husband and I nearly lost our home 2 nights ago in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area Gap fire. We have been evacuated ever since.

The firefighters saved nearly 2500 homes. It is true though that the wind is the wiley controller most often, but the firefighters are the true heroes for all that they risk and do for us. Odd the fires always happen to the more rural folk and not those crazy out of control libs in the core of the cities and their darn court rooms. Doesn’t make sense from a God is coming down on us perspective at all. Is He saving the best for last? I think he is sharpening those he cares about and says damn to the libs that defy Him as He has no hope for their souls at all, but those that go up against adversity often develop empathy and a loving kindness that is distinctly of Himself . . . God is absolutely in charge.

Same here. The fires are probably in Monterey County—full of scenic beauty. And just to the South is San Luis Obispo County, which votes Republican, probably much to the surprise of those who take pleasure about misfortunes in California.

The Big Sur belongs on anybody’s list of the most beautiful places on earth. I always tell first time visitors to try to see this coastal scenery. Another gem is Big Basin park, to the northeast of Santa Cruz, where big redwoods can be seen without going 200 miles further up the coast.

And fires play a role, and when the fires are finished, nature will begin the natural cycle of regrowth.

Go screw yourself, moron. Are you seriously celebrating the destruction of peoples’ homes and some of the most beautiful coastline in our nation? For all the talk of traitors around here, you sure seem to fit the bill.

There are some people out there who built their hopes and dreams into businesses and their homes out there, and you’re celebrating the destruction of all of that. American dreams and lives.

What a freaking waste. You know a firefighter died out there trying to fight that fire.

But that’s “just too good,” right?

Disgusting!

I can see no pleasure in a catastrophe that brings about so much distruction and sorrow.

Not EVERYONE is a Liberal.

Exactly. The cycle. I love the whole area up the coast and find the area I live (Santa Barbara) to all the way up the coast to Monterey outstanding and unique. The California coastline is a special and amazing place and any loss of life or home is a sad, sad thing. Fire is a powerful force that can be the beginning of new life, but also the purveyor of great ruin and destruction. It is all to be honored and revered. When one sees the Chinooks and the converted DC10 dropping water or retardant on the fire rushing down toward their homes and communities there are no politics just awe and hope and prayers.

Yes. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but once lived in Monterey and the Carmel Highlands. There used to be great hiking country throughout the area inland from Big Sur, and I've visited and hiked there a few times since.

Big Sur is one of my favorite places in the world and it is one of the most beautiful. It was a haven for hippie types long ago but now, not quite so much. To see it burn is heartbreaking but what is lost will come back again. Fires, along with floods, occur every now and then in the region, but it always returns eventually to its former beautiful state.

Hopefully the landmarks will continue to be spared by the wonderful firefighters.

It is, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular drives you will ever make. Good thing they have those ‘vista’ spots where you can stop to ooh and aaah at the view, otherwise, you’d end up in the drink!

I need to "third" yours in re Big Sur being one of the most beautiful, inspirational places I've ever been. And we always had to celebrate the night before leaving Big Sur at Nepenthe!

It's not just the hills, the coast -- it's the way the sunlight shines; it has a magical quality, an essence, if you will.

Big Sur is a wonderful place and I hope you are blessed enough to see that beautiful area. If you were so blessed you would not be taking such glee in damage being done to one of America’s natural treasures.

I bet you wouldn’t say that to my face, jerk. My aunt and uncle lost their house to this fire on June 22nd.

To say you are an moronic, insensitive a*hole is an insult to sphincters everywhere.
