WASHINGTON (AFP) Democrat Barack Obama has a dominant lead over Republican John McCain among Hispanic voters, despite his struggle to woo the key bloc during his presidential primary campaign, a poll found Wednesday.
A Gallup survey put Obama up 59 percent to 29 percent over his rival among registered Hispanic voters across the United States. The community will likely play a pivotal role in general election swing states like Colorado, New Mexico and Florida.
The poll was published as McCain made a three-day trip through Colombia and Mexico, designed to burnish his foreign policy credentials, which was also seen as an attempt to win favor among Hispanic voters in the United States.
The poll appears to indicate that many Hispanic voters have shifted their support to Obama from his vanquished Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, who built a Latino powerbase during the fiercely contested nominating contest.
In nationwide "Super Tuesday" primary contests in February for instance, Clinton won the Latino vote by around two-to-one over Obama, according to exit polls.
Gallup said that support for Obama was consistent across demographic groups in the Hispanic community. Only 18 percent of the survey sample identified themselves as Republicans.
The nationwide Gallup survey was conducted among 4,604 Hispanic registered voters, between March 7 and June 30, with a margin of error of plus two percentage points.

Not too late for McCain go after the American citizen vote.
It is not surprising, especially considering it is REGISTERED voters. Somewhat different results MAY be seen if the poll was of likely voters. Supposedly, registered skews Dem.
He tells me that if anything, the numbers are reversed...at least there.
The demographic changes in this country are devastating for the Republican Party—and the changes (which are accelerating) will make things even worse in the future.
McCain panders to the Hispanics and where does it get him? He would be better off dropping the pandering and trying to get back the conservative base he needs to win this election.
How do Hispanics feel about Hillary?
...because Obama won’t come out the Dems’ Denver Convention in August as their leader.
It’s a sure sign that McCain has to step up the latino-pandering, he just hasn’t done enough of that.
No. Really? Socialism has its attractions whether in a Latin American country or the promise of socialism from Obama.
How can people vote for someone in such a bait and switch mode?
Sorry, I don't buy it. I think Obama will prevail. The party leaders won't let themselves be destroyed by such a betrayal. Unless, there is, not a smoking gun, but a gun with fire coming out of the barrel with Obama's hand on it.
Hence my tagline: You think it's bad now - wait till the anchor babies start to vote!
Besides, seeking the 'hispanic vote' has become a sacred quest for those who've been in DC too long.
I find this study hard to believe.
Please, please, please let this kick McCain off of his amnesty obsession.
You’re surprised? Look to Mexico and see what type of people they elect to run their country. They don’t understand our country and aren’t educated in our history.
I read another poll showing McCain attracting 35% support among Hispanics. I think Bush won 45% of the Hispanic vote in 2004, I highly doubt McCain will come close to that number, but I’m confident he will poll better then 29% in November.
I don’t believe this poll even for a moment.
Probably because Obama is campaigning among Hispanics in the US and McCain seems to be campaigning for Hispanics in Columbia and Mexico
GREAT!
I now have another web site to pass around.
Look at the guy on the far right in that photo.
If looks could kill... and it looks like he is looking
at the “arrogant “ one on the left.
La Audacia De La Esperanza Obama! (The Boldness Of the Obama Hope!)
Obama Esta Contico. (Obama This With you)
Nice going Juan you pinhead. Just what did you expect from a bunch of illiterate peasants that are three generations into a full blown Socialist government and then swim the river to march in our streets for "their rights?"
Then your precious amnesty gets b-slapped down by American Citizens three times in a row, President Bush is eating crow over his "See you at the signing" smart remark and this time last year your rating was at one (1%) repeat ONE percent because of your butt-smooching of criminal illegal alien border violators, i.e. illegal aliens.
An you STILL come across with the "I am the mighty Juan and I know more than everyone else" sociopathic support of the illegal aliens by sucking up to those very same illegal aliens and making your cameo appearance at the Annual convention of the National Counsel of La Raza?
What a total dumbazz.
What are the rules for identity politics?
This is pure bs. Living in Texas I can tell you it’s not that way here. I’m no McCain fan, but there’s no way he get smoked among Hispanics by these types of margins. No way, no how. I could pull better numbers than these out of my backside.
They voted for socialists in Mexico and they vote for socialists here. Those who are surprised by these numbers must also be surprised that McCain’s media buddies are bashing him now that he’s running against their guy.
How can people vote for someone in such a bait and switch mode?
Because most people are apathetic idiots who will follow whatever their TV tells them to. I am becoming more and more ashamed of my fellow countrymen with each passing day as this Obama charlatan continues to gather support. It really is as if there has been a mass hypnosis that has affected untold millions of people in this country. What other way to explain how someone who has a stunning number of very close associations with racists and terrorists, and absolutely no qualifications other than repeating the words 'change' and 'hope', is so close to being elected to the most powerful position in the world. This empty suit is so far out of his element it is pathetic, yet there are tens of millions of people, who I only wish were never my countrymen in the first place, who absolutely adore him no matter how many times he blatantly shows himself to be a complete fraud. God help us.
Ironically, a thing that hurts the GOP is that late in every decade, ie 2008, is the population shift toward GOP areas are not reflected in the distribution of electoral votes. I feel quite confidence in saying that the states that McCain will win in November will have more EVs in the 2012 election than this year.
Is there any way, any way at all, that McCain doesn’t get the nomination at the convention? Because at this point any of the others who were running in the primaries would be far, far better than the guy we’re stuck with now. The dems have put up an extreme left wing communist, whose questionable past makes him very beatable in the general election, but the republicans have countered with someone who could put a meth addict to sleep, and is even more beatable.
It may be wishful thinking, but there has to be some loophole that prevents McCain from officially getting the nomination at the convention, because I honestly believe that we are fooling ourselves if we think that he has any serious chance at all of winning in November.
This is not too unusual a result for this point. McCain only needs about 10 more percent to be up to Bush numbers. Well within reach.
We should round them all up, put them in a camp, and release them after the election. Or just put guards at each polling place, and not allow any ethnic people to vote.
Problems with this poll:
1) Polled registered voters.
2) Only 18 percent of the survey sample identified themselves as Republicans.
This poll is worthless.
Hispanics? Legal?
Highly unlikely. After the way MSM labeled him the Maverick and the Comeback Kid during the primaries it was quite clear that McCain was going to be the anointed one. There were no less that five superior candidates, one of which was HIGHLY superior and the liberal (communist) MSM either ignored, propagated rumors about or outright lied about all of them while proclaiming Juan as having a great campaign.
My very best suggesting to every one is prepare for the effects of 30,000,000 illiterate socialist illegal aliens to be amnestied into American citizens and the future election results of that.
Sorry, but that is the way I see it today. Circumstance may change that. I would not depend on it.
The Democratic Party has almost always gotten the majority of all minority voters to vote for them. This isn’t news.
I do not beelvie this one bit! I hate to use the “all the hispancis I know” but I can’ even repeat what most of them have said about BO.
The more I learn about politics and the candidates, the scarier it is.
Here is the video I shot of the illegal alien protest march on Mayday, 2008 in Dallas. Check out 2:01 into the video.
That ain't a McCain sign and it was the only political candidate's sign being carried in the entire protest.
One way or another they will vote dem, socialist, commie, whatever. But they are not about to give a majority of their vote to the "republicans."
The Hispanics will GLADLY vote for barack mcgovern. They WANT to get pushed back to second minority. Sure senior we’re all brother right? We’ll see but I still see McCain doing 40 with Hispanics.
McCain tries to pander with amnesty and is still losing big time with “Hispanic” voters. what a fool.
A war hero does not make a president. McAmnesty will give away this countries sovereignty in a heartbeat. His first attempt at ramming an amnesty bill down our throats failed. He is still on target for giving the 20+ million illegals and their relatives(100 million+) amnesty. Can you say goodbye to America!!!!!
“The demographic changes in this country are devastating for the Republican Partyand the changes (which are accelerating) will make things even worse in the future.
Hence my tagline: You think it’s bad now - wait till the anchor babies start to vote!”
To add to this, both candidates want to give those that are here illegally(20+million) a “path” to citizenship. In this bill will include their “relatives”(another 100 million). GET THE PICTURE FOLKS!!!! VOTE THIRD PARTY.
Rasmussen only polls likely voters. From his website June 30, 2008:
“The Latino vote has been a key campaign battleground and recent Rasmussen Reports polling shows that Obama leads McCain among these voters by a 58% to 29% margin. That is a fairly typical resultno Republican Presidential candidate has ever won more than 40% of the Latino vote.”
B..Bu...But I thought Senor Juan's relentless efforts to open the border and provide amnesty for illegals were supposed to bring the Hispanic vote over to the GOP in droves. What gives?
/sarc
All of whom will vote for international socialism at the polls. America will no longer be a land of freedom and democracy.
I just wish there were some other nation in the world that supports freedom and democracy. Any ideas?
And the vote. (not that being illegal slows that down much)
With Obama we will not only lose the same ground we lose with McCain (and that thought gives me absolutely no pleasure I assure you), but we will probably lose more of it, and we will certainly lose it on all issues, including areas where we may have some hope of holding ground with McCain.
In essence, my efforts are to defeat Obama much more than they are to elect McCain...but in this election cylce, as unfortunate as it is, one will beget the other, and I view that as better by several orders of magnitude than 4 or 8 years of Obama.
God bless all Americans of reason, commitment to the constitution and fundmanetal principle, and true patriotsim to navigate this mine filed.
