SNIPPET: “The manual does not state why car bombings should be carried out remotely.”

#

OPINION:

Generally speaking, the jihadis find that using keeping jihadis alive and using remote-controlled bombs means that live jihadis can be used for more than one jihad mission.

Suiciders are use once and off to hell in various parts.

Best information I can come up with is not sinister. In Feb 08 there was a 4.2 - 5 earthquake near Tyre. It occured along a known active fault zone. It was big enought to generate a considerable number of aftershocks. Unfortunately, USGS does’t show these on the world map. I’ve been following similar series in Nevada that have persisted over the past 6 months in the mag 3 range. Absent more detail, that is what I am leaning towards. Underground explosives would shake the overlying ground, however, if they were the size to damage buildings and bridges - they would also destroy the underground bunkers too.

Iranian Daily: We Won’t Freeze Uranium Enrichment; Senior Iranian Officials Threaten Harsh Response If Iran Is Attacked

In an editorial, the Jomhouri-e Eslami daily emphasized that a freeze on uranium enrichment was a red line that Iran was not willing to cross.

The paper added that Iran was willing to negotiate with the 5+1 only if the latter recognizes its right to nuclear development.

Senior Iranian Officials Threaten Harsh Response If Iran Is Attacked

Senior IRGC official Mas’oud Jazayeri said that if Iran is attacked, it will strike at enemy interests worldwide. Ali Shirazi, representative of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the IRGC navy, said that if Iran were attacked “Tel Aviv and the American warships in the Persian Gulf will be the first targets to go up in flames following Iran’s crushing response.”

Iranian Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari threatened that Iran would hike oil prices “to unanticipated heights” in the event of an attack, and Iranian army chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi warned that if Iran’s interests were in danger, it would use all its capabilities to defend itself, including closing the Straits of Hormuz.

Troops in Iraq Capture Four Suspects, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces detained four suspects and seized caches of weapons in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

Coalition forces captured two suspected members of Iranian-backed “special groups” today during operations in Baghdad’s Shula district, military officials said.

One of the suspects is a senior member of a Baghdad-based cell who received weapons and intelligence training in Iran and acts as an agent of the Islamic Republic, according to an associate detained in a prior operation.

During two-day operations that culminated yesterday, Iraqi National Police and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained two suspects and confiscated weapons in southern Baghdad’s Rashid district.

Troops captured the suspects in the Saha neighborhood before delivering them to a coalition forces combat outpost for questioning. Earlier, combined forces in the Bayaa community discovered 75 assault rifles, military officials said.

On July 7, coalition soldiers found two weapons caches in a Christian cemetery south of Baqouba. The caches consisted of rocket launchers and rockets, grenades, assault rifles with ammunition, and bomb-making materials.

“This cache find demonstrates that we continue to add pressure on criminals who conduct indiscriminate attacks and eliminate their illegal weapons and disruptive accelerants as they attempt to run and hide,” Army Maj. Jon Pendell, a 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment spokesman, said.

Troops in Afghanistan Kill Enemy Fighters, Capture 14, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2008 – Coalition and Afghan forces killed three armed militants, detained 14 suspects and seized weapons in Afghanistan this week.
Forces captured five militants during an operation yesterday in Helmand province. The detentions occurred as troops searched compounds in the Req district for a Taliban leader responsible for smuggling explosives and weapons, including bomb-making materials and heavy machine guns, into the area, military officials said.

Coalition forces also discovered and confiscated an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition.

In Wardak province July 7, forces killed a targeted militant and caught two others during an operation to disrupt the Taliban network.

The targeted militant, found armed with a pistol as coalition forces searched several compounds in the Sayad Abad district, has smuggled munitions into Afghanistan, and has conducted homemade-bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, military officials said. When the enemy fighter threatened forces, they responded with small-arms fire, killing him.

During the operation, coalition forces discovered and confiscated a cache of weapons, grenades, ammunition and a vehicle being used for Taliban operations, military officials said.

Coalition forces killed two militants and detained seven others during an operation July 6 in Helmand province. The raid in the Req district targeted a militant leader known to smuggle explosives and other weapons in the area.

Troops identified two armed militants, who threatened the force. Responding in self-defense, coalition forces retaliated and killed the enemy fighters with small-arms fire.

Forces discovered assault rifles, bomb-making materials, ammunition and a cache of narcotics in a building.

U.S. Officials React to Iranian Missile Test

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2008 – Iran’s test of short- and medium-range missiles is a disturbing development and points to the need for a European missile defense system, Pentagon officials said here today.

Iran tested at least seven missiles yesterday, according to news reports, capable of hitting Israel and parts of Europe.

“Iran’s development of ballistic missiles is a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and completely inconsistent with Iran’s obligations to the world,” White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said to reporters traveling with President Bush in Japan. “The Iranians should stop the development of ballistic missiles, which could be used as a delivery vehicle for a potential nuclear weapon, immediately.”

The test “addresses the doubts raised by the Russians that the Iranians won’t have a longer-range ballistic missile for 10 to 20 years,” Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said during a Pentagon news conference today. “The fact is, they just tested a pretty extended-range [missile].

The situation demonstrates the emerging missile threat from the Middle East, Pentagon officials said, and the need for a missile defense in Europe. Yesterday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed an agreement with the Czech Republic to emplace a missile-defense radar in that country. The United States continues talks with Poland to emplace the missiles.

“We face with the Iranians — and so do our allies and friends — a growing missile threat that is getting ever longer and ever deeper, and where the Iranian appetite for nuclear technology to this point is still unchecked,” Rice said in Prague yesterday.

“I think that the reality is that there is a lot of signaling going on [among Iran, Israel and the United States]. I think everybody recognizes what the consequences of any kind of a conflict would be,” Gates said. “This government is working hard to make sure that the diplomatic and economic approach to dealing with Iran, and trying to get the Iranian government to change its policies, is the strategy and approach that continues to dominate.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Doctors have run a battery of test to try and establish why the 57-year-old Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee collapsed at his home on Monday.

Government sources insist there is no evidence of suspicious circumstances, but Miss Salm’s account will add to speculation that Mr Allan may have been targeted by a foreign spy.”

“MEDVEDEV’S FOREIGN POLICY ADVISER DENOUNCES BBC REPORT ON LITVINENKO MURDER”
By Jonas Bernstein

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “As Bloomberg noted, The Sun reported on July 4 that Alex Allan, chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, the U.K. government’s top intelligence adviser, had been hospitalized after suddenly falling ill at home. The British newspaper quoted a security expert as saying that the likeliest culprits for Allan’s suspected poisoning were al-Qaeda or the FSB. (It should be noted that other British media have quoted unnamed British government sources as ruling out foul play as the cause of Allan’s illness.)

The Telegraph reported on July 6 that the activities of Russian spies in Britain were seriously undermining the fight against terrorism”

“New attack against Christians in Orissa, an orphanage is destroyed and a parish church attacked”
Asia News ^ | 7/9/2008 | Nirmala Carvalho
Posted on July 9, 2008 6:58:28 PM PDT by markomalley

SNIPPET: “The reaction by the Sangh Parivar Hindu fundamentalist group is caused by the butchery of a cow. Last Christmas the same area saw the destruction of 13 churches and the killing of three people. Local bishop accuses the government of collusion with the attackers.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Kandhamal (AsiaNews) – “The fanatical forces of Hindutva want to eliminate Christians from Orissa, especially those in Kandhamal district,” said Raphael Cheenath, archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar, without mincing words, in response to reports that the Jesuit home and church as well as the Protestant orphanage in Tumudiband (Kandhamal district) were looted and destroyed.

About six months, at Christmas times, the same district was violently attacked by Hindu nationalist groups. And police so far has not found any culprit even though everyone knows the name of the group involved in the attack.

“The new attack by the Sangh Parivar (a radical Hindu umbrella group) against Christians is the direct consequence of the impunity they have enjoyed since December 2007.

“There is collusion between the government and the fanatical groups to create chaos against Christians, as they go unpunished,” said Archbishop Cheenath.

The area has been isolated since yesterday and the population is scared. The attack itself began around midday. Some Christians from the village of Tumudiband (Malikpada) butchered a cow and were taking the meat home. A group of Hindu radicals stopped them in the road and took photos with a cellphone.”
