Pelosi: We Have Taken Serious Steps and Passed Innovative Solutions to Help Americans at the Pump

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 07/02/2008 Pelosi: We Have Taken Serious Steps and Passed Innovative Solutions to Help Americans at the Pump

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in reaction to President Bush's comments on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Outer Continental Shelf:

"The American people heard from the President today more of the same failed policies of the past: drill, drill, and drill. Drilling in places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Outer Continental Shelf could only save consumers a couple of pennies a gallon, 22 years from now. That’s not going to help this 4th of July weekend, or this summer, or even in this generation.

"To help Americans at the pump immediately and ensure American energy independence for years to come, Democrats have taken serious steps, and passed innovative solutions. Last week, we put oil speculators on notice, passing legislation to direct the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to use its emergency powers to take immediate action to curb speculation in energy markets. Experts have testified before Congress that the explosion of speculation in the oil futures market could be driving up prices from $20 to $60 per barrel. Oil speculators are making money by betting against the American consumers at the pump.

"We also overwhelmingly passed legislation to lower fares for mass transit and expand services for commuters literally forced from their cars by the price at the pump. Investing in public transit is a key component of a clean and green American energy future.

"Unfortunately, the President’s Republican colleagues in Congress blocked ‘Use it or Lose it’ legislation to compel the oil industry to start drilling on the 68 million acres of leased but undeveloped federal lands which they are currently warehousing. These lands could nearly double U.S. oil production and cut oil imports by one-third. Also last week, Republicans stopped Democratic efforts to empower the Federal Trade Commission to go after price gougers at the wholesale and retail level. We will redouble our efforts to pass these much-needed solutions.

"Democrats have enacted the first new vehicle fuel efficiency standards in 32 years, and we have made an historic commitment to affordable American-grown biofuels, which is keeping gas prices almost 50 cents lower than they otherwise would be. On the occasion of America’s Independence Day, we renew our commitment to American energy independence, and we urge the President and Republicans in Congress to join us in taking America in a New Direction."

“American-grown biofuels” are rotting my car’s insides and suppressing my miles per gallon.

Ethanol is garbage and has no place in automotive transportation.

I must not have noticed how we've been drilling, drilling, and drilling in the past. Miz Pelosi must have a different past from mine.

Amen to that! My trusty old Nissan uses premium gas, but always got 26-29 mpg until this year, and it is like new mechanically because I keep it that way. Now, my mileage is down 2 mpg because of the lower octane rating of this mixed crap! The mechanic who works on my car told me he has had a litany of like complaints from customers who drive similar vehicles-I’m sure it cannot be good for my car.

- Drilling in ANWAR and OCS will drop gas prices pennies in 22 years.

- Drilling in current leases will double oil production and cut imports by one third.

You can’t have it both ways, nancy. Is there some reason we can’t do BOTH and become totally independent?

- Legislate lower fares and increased service for mass transit.

And how do you pay for that? Most mass transit already requires huge subsidies (that’s taxpayer money for you demonrats). Are you going to make them even bigger?

I live in a rural commuter community-the only mass transit here is car pooling, and we’ve always done that on our own because it makes sense-it that what that dumbass means by “services for commuters?’

Anyone who uses a lot of oil products can hedge against future increases by buying an Oil ETF (Exchange traded fund). You can Google, or ask your broker for more info.

(Disclaimer: this is absolutely NOT investment advice. Not that anyone stupid enough to take investment advice from anonymous sources over the Internet, would have enough money to invest anyhow.)

Three months before the 2006 elections that put Democrats in control of Congress, Newsweek and Princeton Survey Research Associates found that Americans trusted Democrats to do a better job of handling gas prices. A much better job, by better than a two to one margin over the GOP.

Was that confidence justified? Not according to data compiled by the U. S. Department of Energy. The week the Democrats smashed Republicans in the 2006 elections, the retail price of regular reformulated gas was $2.22. This week, the price was $4.16.

Before the election that made her House speaker, Nancy Pelosi cranked out a press release announcing: "Democrats have a commonsense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices. . . "

OK, Nancykins, do you think it's about time to implement that commonsense plan you and your sidekicks promised?[/i]

Hooray for gas pains

Let's look back about two years, Nancy. Did you or did you not demand not one but two jets capable of flying you and your staff and your family cross country every time you went home for the weekend? As I recall, Speaker Hastert had the use of Air Force 3 for himself and two staff members (no family or friends on the plane).

Prior to 9-11, the Speaker of the House flew commercial, just like every other citizen. The Capitol Police felt the danger was too great to the Speaker and the other passengers on the planes, and reinstituted Air Force 3 for the Speaker of the House. The use of this plane was severely limited -- no fundraising trips, no vacation trips -- strictly to and from work.

Also last week, What utter nonsense—I wasted my Geological Education and 32 years of experience when all we had to do is punch holes anywhere to double our production. And by the way Nancy girl, you signed leases - if you abrogate those leases, we will sue the federal government. None of what she said has any legitimatcy.
