BELLEVUE, WA Anti-gun New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg should mind his own store before telling others how to operate theirs, said the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, after an audit found that the New York Police Department lost track of dozens of guns in its own storage lockers.
While this guy has been bullying gun dealers around the country about so-called slip-shod operations, chuckled CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, his own police department seems to be slipping quite a bit on its own. Bloomberg needs to back off, shut up and get his own house in order before telling others how to operate.
According to the New York Times, nearly one out of three handguns and rifles that had been turned in to the police could not be immediately accounted for in a Manhattan property clerks office.
Were waiting for Bloomberg to send a team of undercover vigilante investigators down there to find out whats wrong, Gottlieb said. Can one of his infamous lawsuits be far behind?
Bloomberg dispatched non-police investigators to run stings on gun shops in several states more than two years ago, ostensibly to show how easy it is to illegally obtain guns in other states. He then sued gun dealers in five states. This rogue operation landed the mayors office in hot water with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for jeopardizing on-going legitimate investigations. Ultimately the Justice Department warned the mayor not to pull that stunt again.
If Mayor Bloomberg wants to find mismanagement of a firearms inventory, Gottlieb stated, he doesnt need to send goon squads to Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia or anywhere outside of his jurisdiction. All he really needs is to do is visit the police property room in Manhattan and turn his lawyers loose.
Its a pity that Bloomberg cant lose his arrogant attitude as easily as his cops can lose track of their gun inventory, he concluded.
With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nations premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. Ping
Bloomberg is a typical statist.
No guns for you. Don’t worry the police will protect you. Never mind the fact that 2 officers can fire off an entire magazine each at point blank range and miss. Never mind that they can’t keep track of their own guns. You don’t need to worry. We’re from the government, and we’re here to help.
i’d like to see the times article. because it is most likely crap. that being said, bloomturd sux.
Neither can the chiefs in Commie Seattle..
Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowski had his pistol stolen from a department car where he had left it when we went shopping. Now, Kerlikowski is someone of special interest to the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). Thats because as chief in Buffalo, NY, where one SAF office is located, before he became chief in Seattle, next door to Bellevue, WA, where another SAF office is located, he has always been an advocate of new gun control proposals. He has been for bans on semi-automatic military look-alike long gunscozying up to Clinton in the early 1990s, gun locks and safe storage, etc., etc.
I’VE GOT THEM! I’VE GOT THEM ALL!!!!
And you’ll NEVER see them again you fascist bastard!
Nanny State Ping...........
This couldn’t happen to a nicer Nanny State proponent. The Bloomin’idiot himself!!!!!! HEE HEE HEE!
Full disclosure here, I come from 3 generations of NYPD. My grandfather retired with a gold shield, my dad retired after 20, and my brother was early retired because of a line of duty injury (his back was broken in a fall during a perp pursuit))
Thanks for the ping!
all firearms were eventually accounted for. so they store rifles in a "disheveled" manner. so what!?!
and i'm glad they store guns longer than they should. it allowed me to attain my dads confiscated handguns, when i became a cop, years after they were taken away.
I just hope some criminal gets busted carrying an NYPD weapon, that would be Hi-Larious.
He is likely soon to be be unemployed.
Bloomers is more worried about smoking and transfats than he is about the gun rights of New Yorkers.
It seems NY state isnt the only govt agency unable to keep track. It wasnt all that long ago that the wonderful ATF had to admit in court its records were in complete disarray....and that they were using those same records to give sworn testimony in a large number of court cases. In other words they were flying by the seat of the pants and just plain lying under oath. I think in essence they got a pass-go.
In my first hand experience the ATF had to contact local FFLs in order to correct their records of class 3 weapon transfers! In this case all of those in question were machine guns and the dealer had to correct years of ATF errors.
I've said it a hundred times, Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs are usually political animals and quite often are liberal as all get-out.
Ah-yes, the old bugaboo "military look-alike long guns". Yeah man, those LEGAL rifles are really scary folks! Let's see, a 1700s U.S. citizen with a French made .69 cal musket in the corner would be in violation by the same standards right? I guess he would for sure, there wouldn't be a trigger lock either...
Bloomberg once again proves what a tin-plated little Hitler he is: "Do as I say, not as I do"...
I have a friend who’s a dealer in the Carolinas. Bloomy bought him a nice Colt match 1911.
His stooges, a hispanic man and woman, came and actually requested that model. He offered to order it for them. They paid, he ordered, they left, he called the ATF to report them for a straw purchase. The ATF told him to forget about them, he’d never see them again.
Now he has the Colt, paid for by the taxpayers of NYC!
That Bloomin idgit has his panties in a bunch 24/7 over gun laws criminals have no intention of following yesterday, today or tomorrow !
I’d bet good money he made boom boom in his bloomies when Heller case was made !
I didn't read the NYT report, but I went to the actual audit...and yes, it is mostly alarmist crap. Still, Bloomie should watch where he points fingers...
all firearms were eventually accounted for.
"accounted for"
Ah, but "accounted for" is the problem.
Of the 1/3 of the firearms that they couldn't find immediately, they later claimed that 3/4 of those were "returned to the owner" or "destroyed"...but I see no check to see that actually occurred.
In other words, 20% of these firearms could have been taken by an employee, with a claim of destruction.
NYC's rate of failing to properly document these firearms would land any private gun dealer in prison!
so they store rifles in a "disheveled" manner. so what!?!
They noted that scattering long arms on the floor in piles removed the tracking tags. They could also be damaged. Citizens' property should be better cared for...note that many of these are being held, to be returned later.
and i'm glad they store guns longer than they should. it allowed me to attain my dads confiscated handguns, when i became a cop, years after they were taken away.
What burns me up is the destruction of firearms. The firearms should be given away or sold (going to general fund), if they aren't dangerously defective.
but i think most of these guns are illegal guns. which should be off the streets. most of them were probably taken off criminals.
when a gun is taken in nyc it is always vouchered. if you are allowed to reclaim it you must bring the voucher to the property clerk. they don't seem to lose guns, but i know they lose vouchers! been there, done that.
Hypocrisy does not apply to liberals.
Your Grandpa, Dad and brother are a lot braver than me for being police officers in NY.
No way would I take a job for 25k-125k where people shot at me.
Then again, for 300k/year I would consider it fun. I get to shoot and kill people and get paid! They won’t even charge me with a crime!!!
The twin city empire of New York and Washington strikes again. The arrogance of New York is well documented and historic. Even when it is attacked, it still stubbornly votes for Democrats that eviscerate the military and allow double agent minorities to run our intelligence agencies. Never mind the fact that Democrats are historically horrible for New York banking and economics as a whole. Go figure.
Yup, it's happened so many times as to have become a truism, while in the entire article there is not even a mention of that possibility.
Do you think John Lott would be interested in doing the statistical analysis by which to extract an estimate of what fraction of gun crimes are supplied by weapons that have already been confiscated and "slipped" through the fingers of the authorities? They have to record the numbers somewhere. One would merely see if they pop up twice in the database. It would make one heck of a PhD study in criminology! It might also put an end to the "gun show loophole" screaming for good.
I can hear it now, "There are more gun crimes committed by weapons illegally sold from police property rooms, than by all the gun shows combined."
Sigh, ah for the day...
There, fixed it for you.
many are purchased in bulk down south and driven up to the city to be sold. sure, the guns are stolen from criminals by other criminals, but they were never in legal hands.
I see that you've bought into the MSM's old "bought in bulk down south" crap. I live "down south" and NONE the gun stores that I know sell in "bulk" like you're purporting.
Most of the guns that criminals get are stolen from legal/rightful owners and when found by the cops, returned to their legal/rightful owners.
that's why we refer to I-95 as the "iron pipe-line". and you are able to buy more than one handgun at a time in many states.
