Five policemen were stabbed to death in Shanghai today after a man set fire to their station before charging in with a knife in a frenzied attack.
Government officials said the man, a 28-year-old from Beijing named only as Yang, was "quickly overpowered" and arrested.
Police said the attacker confessed he had wanted revenge after police arrested him last year on suspicion of stealing bicycles.
"He was unhappy ... In order to take revenge, he decided to commit criminal actions," a statement said. "He broke into the building, attacking policemen who were at work."
According to the statement, the man set a fire outside the police station's front gate at around 9:40 am local time, attracting a security guard. He stabbed the guard and then charged into the station.
Police in blood-soaked clothes could be seen being carried out, some suffering chest injuries and others with wounds to their faces.
Violent crime is unusual in China, but the speed with which the attack was reported by Shanghai's state media is also rare.
The eastday.com website published frequent updates, posting news of the deaths well before officials would confirm them.
Authorities, however, quickly pulled pictures off one photograph-sharing website that showed blood pooling in the gutter outside the station.

is this better? now i know the rules about the AP.
not until they find a buyer for his organs.
Clearly we need to get these ‘bolt-action/semi-automatic/high-powered/street-sweeping/saturday-night-special/assault knives’ off the street and we better do it right now FOR THE CHILDREN.
Do Chinese policemen not carry guns? How did this guy get past the front door carrying a knife?
you could put 5 people in a row and have none of them fight back and it would still take a bit of time to kill them. these were cops who must have fought back and not been in very close proximity to each other.
i guess "quickly" is a relative term to the chinese.
I am thinking there are at least 4 of the cops who would disagree about the term "quickly".
and i think he killed a security guard who was outside and then he went inside.
56 seconds, a lifetime on FR...
It’s like your basic Kung Fu fight.
You haved one guy surrounded by a half-dozen and they each take their turn, yell AIEEEEEEEE, run up and get their ass kicked (or cut in this case) then another one yells ‘yarrrrrrgh’ (sorta Howard Dean-like) and runs up to be shredded.
Theoretically, one man could kill tens of thousands, allowing time for eating and sleeping breaks.
How the hell does a guy kill FIVE police officers with a knife? One. Maybe two, if he’s a ninja. But FIVE? He should’ve had his head blown clean off his shoulders WELL before FIVE.
Maybe the Shanghai Police ought to hire Joe Horn.
H
plenty of time NOT to read the article. ha!
or just have joe horn move next door...
Grasshopper, when you can snatch the police baton from my hand it is time for you to leave.
“Drop the knife. [Click, Boom!].”
I’d feel safer living in a Houston suburb than inside the Shanghai police station. (Which is why, I suppose, I live in a Houston suburb).
H
Knives? I thought they used chop sticks!
Maybe the Red Chinese thugs will hesitate next time they snatch a humble peasant from the street and and brutalize him for hours on a pretext of bicycle theft .
heh That was the exact image I had when reading this story.
Yes, and establish a background check and waiting period for setting fires.
Makes one wonder what type of training Chicom police officers receive.
I’m in Shanghai right now. This occured right near the train station where I arrived last week. My sense is that most Chinese policemen on the street do not carry guns. I can only imagine that these officers were stunned by the ferocity of the attack, tried to subdue the perp, and didn’t or couldn’t get to weapons in time.
It’s a terrible thing and my prayers are with their families.
