Crackdown on Arizona IIlegals Stirs National Immigration Debate

Sheriffs in Phoenix, Ariz., have launched an aggressive crackdown on illegal aliens as part of a growing movement by local officials to help prevent illegal immigration.

Maricopa County sheriffs have instituted a zero tolerance policy — knocking on doors and arresting those suspected of living in the country illegally.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the law is clear cut. “Our policy is if we come across any illegal ... you are arrested. You don’t get a ticket. You get to appear before a judge later on.”

In the wake of two unsuccessful attempts at passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill in Congress, state and local governments have increasingly taken it upon themselves to find solutions to the immigration problem.

Recent statistics indicate that enforcement of existing immigration laws — both at local and state levels — has been successful in stemming the tide of illegal immigrants coming into the country.

"Nearly 328 miles of the border fence has already been built, and officials are hoping to construct hundreds more by year's end. Federal prosecutions of immigration offenses now amount for 57 percent of total prosecutions, eclipsing cases brought against white-collar criminals and drug offenders, which account for only 20 percent combined."

...

"Camarata said improvement might not come in the form of new legislation but at the behest of public opinion. “Congress isn’t that interested in enforcing the law. President Bush isn’t that interested. The one interest group that has really been pushing for enforcement is the public,” said Camarata."

Won’t be any debate at all. Nobody cares. The GOP went crazy about immigration then nominated McCain. We’re screwed.

Striking changes in Arizona as illegal immigrants flee the state

Since Arizona's local law enforcement began enforcing illegal immigration laws and an employer sanctions law went into effect, illegal immigrants have been fleeing the state in large numbers. The effects have been far-ranging. Commuters are reporting fewer vehicles on the freeways, shortening their rush-hour commutes. What had become a serious transportation problem in Arizona is losing its urgency. English Learner Language (ELL) students started dropping out of school. This helped end a confrontation between the state legislature and a liberal federal judge who had ordered the state to spend more money on ELL classes.

Fewer illegal immigrants are using hospital emergency rooms, so waiting times have decreased. Although the rest of the country is in an economic slump, unemployment is going down in Arizona, from 4.5% in January to 4.1% in March. Day laborers loitering outside of Home Depot and other stores have mostly disappeared, ending months of confrontation between illegal immigrant sympathizers and protesters. Desert lands near the border are returning to their pristine condition and the wildlife is coming back. Identity theft and car thefts are decreasing. No one showed up on May 1 to march in immigrant rallies.

With illegal immigrants leaving, the state will see huge savings as fewer illegal immigrants use social welfare programs and the cost of arresting, prosecuting, incarcerating and deporting them decreases. Arizona is facing one of the worst budget deficits ever, looming as high as $2 billion in 2009, but the situation may resolve itself.

I hate to be cynical - but then again, at a bare minimum Joe has managed to get the fingerprints/photos of these folks, that’s better than a summons that no one honors. It would be better to get a DNA fingerprint, but at the rate they are coming in and getting arrested - the labs probably could not keep up.

I'd like to hear anecdotal observations from Freepers in Arizona since these laws were passed...do you see any lessening of illegals, like in the parking lots of Home Depot?

Anyone in OK, as well.

There has definitely been a decrease in the illegal mexican population here in OKC since the laws went into effect. They do self deport when the laws are passed. The rest can be weeded out using Sheriff Joe's methods.

Sheriffs in Phoenix, Ariz., ...Maricopa County sheriffs

There's only one Sheriff in the County, the others are deputies. I should know, I was one there for 8 years with the Maricopa County Sheriff Divers Posse in the early 1970's. I recovered many drowning victims on the lakes and rivers around that area.

“. Federal prosecutions of immigration offenses now amount for 57 percent of total prosecutions, eclipsing cases brought against white-collar criminals and drug offenders, which account for only 20 percent combined.””

That breaks our justice system. That should mortify everyone.

Javier Rodriguez, a Southern California-based immigrantion advocate who supports full amnesty for illegal immigrants who already live in the United States, calls current policy a form of domestic terrorism that negatively affects the lives of immigrants who are working for an honest wage, even if they are not here legally.

“The Bush administration has launched a low-intensity warfare campaign of terror, of raids, of deportation, that has taken its toll on the immigrant communities throughout the country,” said Rodriguez./

Send this assclown Javier to Gitmo for a week or two to understand what a real terrorist is

There's your immigration reform Johnny!

We’re building the fence. We’re doubling the border patrol. We are arresting people on the interior that are illegally working,” Chertoff said After Kay Bailey Hutchinson, John Cornyn and their amnesty loving cronies destroyed legislation for the double layer fence. The latest fence is a joke.

“If I had to grade the administration right now, I would say maybe a C plus or a C minus,” said Stephen Camarata of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies.

That's being kind.

Camarata said improvement might not come in the form of new legislation but at the behest of public opinion.

How prophetic considering it already has due to the public resoundingly rejecting amnesty legislation twice last summer.

Javier Rodriguez, a Southern California-based immigrantion advocate who supports full amnesty for illegal immigrants who already live in the United States, calls current policy a form of domestic terrorism that negatively affects the lives of immigrants who are working for an honest wage, even if they are not here legally.

You have it 180 degress backwards Javier. The current "policy" as you put it is the law. Amnesty makes it easier for terrorists to enter the country.

That maybe a bad idea since terrorists now have the same rights as American citizens thanks to SCOTUS.

At my school (here in Arizona) we lost a fair number of ELL students.
However, not ALL of the illegals are leaving. I know of some students at my school who are illegal, but still remain.

Exactly!

We don’t need “reform”.

ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS that are on the books NOW!

THAT is what they PUBLIC wants - the majority of the public.

They also seem to be diminishing in number here in Mid-Missouri.
Our Gov. Blunt and even the state Attn. Gen. Nixon (a Democrat) have
been pretty consistent about going against illegal immigration.

If Attn. Gen. Nixon gets elected governor later this year,
it will be interesting to see if he starts hugging illegals.

I wonder how long it'll be before local anti-illegal figures in the US start being targeted for assassination, just like serious law enforcement figures are in Mexico?

And I'm not so sure our national leaders will mind.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. Although, politicians like Obama and McPain are suing them for votes. They know illegals will vote for them. The only problem is that this kind of individual will vote for the bigger Santa Claus - Obama. McPain is wasting his time, winking at ILLEGAL immigration. Anyone that comes here ILLEGALLY, is already a criminal and will vote for people like themselves .... Obama fits that better.

McPain is idiotic - no “maverick” as he like to think of himself. He's a confused, inept man in way over his head. Obama is worse ... so this year is especially painful ... .

Bush is a globalist. He does not want to build physical fences between us and Mexico or Canada. The future goal of United Bations globalists is to have the three become one nation without borders or customs stations. The people would be able to travel freely between all cities and get gainful employment without any concerns for citizenship.

Yes there are less illegals here, apartment complexes that used to be full have empty apartments. As for Home Depot parking lots here, that was never an issue, this is not a sanctuary city. I haven’t seen anyone I could id as an illegal on the streets for over a year, I used to see them regularly. The law is a contributing factor, the increase in BP operations in this area has also lessened the number of illegals here locally.
