An Attack That Came Out of the Ether
The Washington Post ^ | June 28, 2008 | Matthew Mosk

The e-mail landed in Danielle Allen's queue one winter morning as she was studying in her office at the Institute for Advanced Study, the renowned haven for some of the nation's most brilliant minds. The missive began: "THIS DEFINITELY WARRANTS LOOKING INTO."

Poring over these early articles on the topic, Allen noticed what she thought was an important pattern. In each instance, someone had posted the articles on the Free Republic Web site, prompting a discussion involving the same handful of people, with several expressing a desire to spread the word about Obama’s supposed faith.

Keeper of the Obama File

Of the file folders that are spread in neat rows across Allen’s desk, only one is bulging. It holds printouts of the reams of conversations about Obama’s religion appearing on Free Republic. Since its start in 1996 by Jim Robinson of Fresno, Calif., the site has grown into a home for discussion of all types — though it is particularly noted for spirited political discussions dominated by conservatives and libertarians. Freepers, as they’re called, converse with a varying degree of transparency. Most remain anonymous.

Allen counted 23 freepers among those engaging in regular discussions about Obama’s religion, and isolated a handful whom she began to suspect as having a role in the e-mail. Sifting through hundreds of postings, she began to piece together their identities. There was “Beckwith,” whom she pegged as a veteran from Boston, old enough to vote for John F. Kennedy, in uniform by 1964, and host of a Web site that devotes considerable space to an “Obama file” that says the senator is “by birth, blood and training, a Muslim.”

Allen found Beckwith discussing the matter in a Jan. 13 clip from a Web-based conservative radio show based in San Diego. In his thick Boston brogue, Beckwith told hosts Jeff Lynch and Mike Howard that Obama’s “relationship to Islam is the big question. When one investigates the background of Obama’s conversion, I can find no record of his baptism.”

I read the whole 4 pages of the story. Not once did the article attempt to clear the air about Obama. Instead they just talk about how people are talking about whether Obama is a Muslim or not. Gee, is that a sin?

Dr Allen, instead of wasting your time tracking people who are engaged in free speech, why didn't you just sit down with Obama and interview him on his complete background and then do a check on what he told you about his background, then report that?!

Or is that just too obvious for a "genius!" You have done nothing to clear the air. And that's unfortunate and amounts to a waste of your time.

We are all back to square 1.

Anyway, just because someone is a Muslim doesn’t mean they can’t still love America and be patriotic.

It has been said that not every Muslim is a terrorist, but check it out Sparky, on 9/11 EVERY TERRORIST WAS A MUSLIM.

And a belated welcome to FR, you've been posting some excellent articles FRiend, and I have been enjoying them.

"What I've come to realize is, the labor of generating an e-mail smear is divided and distributed amongst parties whose identities are secret even to each other," she says

It also aggressively disregards the fundamental principle of free societies that one be able to debate one's accusers."

This is nothing more than trying to build a case for a fairness doctrine type mandate for the Internet. It will begin with demanding that people use their real names and that will effectively shut people up.

Liberals are all about "choice" UNTIL you choose differently than them.

I know this, whether he actually is or is not Islamic, he can recite the Islamic call to prayer perfectly in Arabic...and did so in one interview, calling it one of the most beautiful sounds in the world.

Many Islamics believe, due to the definitive nature of that prayer, that anyone who recites it becomes a "Muslim".

All of that aside, by his actions and positions in the IL and US Senates, and by his willful, long-term assocaiations, Obama is marked as the most anti-American and marxist individual to ever gain the nomination of any major party in US history.

As an Obama supporter -- she had met the senator while she worked as a dean at the University of Chicago -- it made her angry. And curious. "I started thinking, 'How does one stop it?' "

You don't stop free speech, Danielle. You address it.

Quite the little stalker, isn't she? Good at hunting people down.

Obama believes in Obama. It as foolish to think he’s a Muslim as it is to think he’s a Christian. No one with an ego that size believes in any God.

Yes, he does believe in deity - it's him. He is Obamessiah, and he answers to himself. Very concerning.

Any one who can think knows the answer (even a “genius” like Allen)...finding out the truth is NOT her agenda. Shutting up people who she doesn’t agree with, shutting up people who mess with HER agenda is the goal.

these types of articles always say that the rumor and innuendo has been refuted or debunked by the mainstream press, yet I never see any credible analysis or detailed refutation.

Dittoes. I've kept a perfectly open mind about the Swift Boat matter but have yet to find any credible refutation. It seems to me if Kerry was slandered or libeled by untrue accusations, he has full access to the court system to defend his "honor," along with virtually unlimited funds to press his legal case. Yet the WaPo piece dismisses the whole issue as a proven smear.

I have no idea whether Obama's a Muslim. I do know he was a 20-year member of a Black Liberation Theology church with a minister who outspokenly hates America. I do know Obama never took public issue with the church's anti-Americanism until it became politically expedient to do so. I do know he's a racist. That's enough for me to vote against him.

Obama can be a muslim if he wants to be. He can be a Christian if he wants to be. He can be anything he wants to be...even gumby. Did I mention he was green?

Whether he is a Muslim or a Baptist is irrelevant to me. What's more important is that he is a Marxist and an idiot.

I don't believe Obama is a Muslim.

My gut feeling is that he's an atheist.

He spent 20 years going to Jeremiah Wright's politicized church because it served his political purposes in his chosen Chicago political niche but I don't believe he has a single religious bone in his body.

I believe he considers religion "the opiate of the masses". Thus, he describes religious people as "clinging to religion".

Precisely. Somehow I doubt Ms. Allen will ever be pursuing an investigation into the lies/deceit regularly spewed at places like DU or The DK.

Quite the little stalker, isn't she? Good at hunting people down.

That bimbo Danielle Allen doesn't have the first clue about stalking. If I wanted to, I could have her entire credit and employment history, complete criminal history, and a whole bunch of interesting stuff from her neighbors past and present, and she couldn't do a damn thing about it.

I spent enough years doing skiptracing for a major corporation that I could figuratively put a microphone and a camera up her tail, have a good look around, write 'Kilroy was Here' inside her colon, and she would never have a clue.
