Comprehensivist Down! In 2006, the primary victory of GOP Rep. Chris Cannon was offered by many pundits as comforting evidence that the immigration issue didn't have legs. After all, Cannon had supported "comprehensive" immigration reform--including legalization (i.e. semi-amnesty)--yet he survived in a conservative Utah district.
Here's Michael Barone two years ago:
If Cannon had lost, House Republicans surely would have panicked and stonewalled any approach but border-security-only. But his victory -- and the fact that he ran ads with endorsements from George W. Bush, who supports a comprehensive bill -- indicates that his positions are not political death, even in a district that went 77 percent to 20 percent Republican in the 2004 presidential election
Well, yesterday Cannon lost-- to a fellow Republican who had no paid staff or polling but did attack Cannon's support of "amnesty." And Cannon lost by a large margin (60-40) primarily because he "failed to generate the kind of [Republican primary] turnout typically enjoyed by House incumbents." ...

Well, where are they? The open border lobby that tells us anti-illegal immigration is a loosing issue?
The lie, “anti-illegal immigration people cost the repubs the 2006 election!!
The truth:11.5% of all Republican seats in Congress were lost as Democrats took back control of Congress
But only 6.7% of the Members of Tancredos Immigration Reform Caucus lost their seats.AND- one of them was Hayworth who voted against HR 4437!
# 9.6% with an A grade lost
# 25.0% with an F grade lost

Hmmmmm...
ping
Utah would never go for Nobama. It’ll never happen.
Chaffetz favors deporting illegal aliens and doing away with the education Department.
My kind of guy.
Mitt Romney for VP?
As I see it, there are about 7 departments that need to be dealt away with.
Agriculture
Education
Homeland
HUD
Labor
Transportation
Veteran Affairs
He got it right. It was Chris’ stance on immigration those years ago that did him in. It was one of my major reasons for voting for Jason, and to send money to his campaign.
Is there evidence that, at least, the local Republican establishment is finally getting the message?
What can you tell us about the guy who beat Cannon. Is he a solid conservative?
If this ever sees the national news, I'll bet it will be spun as a sign that Republicans are really in trouble after the special election losses in Mississippi and Illinois. The illegal immigration issue won't even be mentioned.
Barone, Fred Barnes, Mike Medved, George W. Bush, John MacCain and all other pro-surrender “conservatives” are all a bunch of asshats leading the GOP charge over the cliff and into oblivion.
Wow! First I heard that Cannon lost, let alone that he lost big. Are there links to the election abstracts? Is there evidence that, at least, the local Republican establishment is finally getting the message? What can you tell us about the guy who beat Cannon. Is he a solid conservative?
There will be more scratching of the heads at the GOP like they did in 2006. Until we get rid of the old ‘can’t we get along’ pubs, real conservatism will not happen. They will keep leaning more and more to the center to left that it won’t take long to get rid of all of them.
You forgot the EPA.
Don’t expect the Wall St. Journal crowd to make much mention of this. Although the pro-border patriots have lost some battles in the past there have also been some major victories and this one is huge.
Our congressional overlords will never understand that people across the board want illegal aliens out, we want more drilling here in America, and we want less government and government programs.
Jason is significantly more conservative than Chris. Deportation, not amnesty. Eliminate the Dept. of Education. Etc.
Chris Cannon, one of the nations most conservative congressmen, lost his bid for a seventh term Tuesday . . .
These guys really do all think alike, don't they?
They may be right, after all, unless you are THE most liberal congresscritter, you are one of the most conservative. That being said, Jason is MORE conservative than Chris.
Never to Willard!
Never another NE Liberal faker!
$50 co pay for the planned murder of the most helpless!
NO! He's brought that man onto his campaign who is a Mexican citizen as well as an American citizen, and he's helping McCain to get the Mexican vote. He'll be indebted to him, and his price is amnesty!
“Well, where are they? The open border lobby that tells us anti-illegal immigration is a losing issue?”
Two of the dimwits left FR for WideAwakes. I’m sure they are posting the same self-important tripe about how this proves the GOP has been taken over by racists and nativists and xenophobes, and the Party is doomed! They were big fans of Chris Cannon, and Morris Dees for that matter.

“Barone, Fred Barnes, Mike Medved, George W. Bush, John McCain and all other pro-surrender conservatives “
Aaakk! But hey, they’ve not once had grafitti sprayed on their houses, inside the gated community. So there’s no problemo, senor. You must be a xenophobe. I salute you.
One of the great shames of history is that the undocumented guest worker/ terrorists of 9-11 didn’t aim a plane at the editorial office of the WSJ. They have been the fiercest defenders of wide open borders, and it’s a shame Paul Gigot and his fellow vermin didn’t get to reap what they sowed.

Truth bump....
Close. Just can't abide a fellow "conservative" trying to sell my children's future for his own selfish benefit.
Messrs. Barone, Barnes, Medved, Bush, MacCain et al. should realize that civil wars (which we now have on the right) are among the ugliest, and I'd sooner join them all in hell than give away my country without a fight.
The WSJ has been hacking for open borders for as long as I can remember. They used to have a lot more influence than they do now thankfully, I don’t know how anyone could even listen to them period when you look at the results of what de facto open borders has given us.
