'Adios' English school? Super wants all-Spanish

Dissatisfied with teaching in Spanish 85 percent of the time, a North Carolina superintendent is pushing for a $10 million budget that includes a plan for a school where only Spanish is spoken.

Superintendent Peter Gorman pitched his proposal to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board today, with provisions to turn Collinswood Elementary into a Spanish program. Nora Carr, chief communications officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District, told WND the facility will help to preserve Hispanic culture.

We find that a lot of kids who go there have parents who might be English-speaking immigrants, and they might be very successful," she said. "They fear that their kids might be losing some of the culture or not getting the fluency in the language because they speak English at home."

Carr said one of the top executives with AT&T is Hispanic and sends his children to the school.

"Obviously they are very fluent, well-educated in English, legal citizens," she said. "They're sending their kids there because they want them to have exposure to their native language."

Based on U.S. Census 2000 figures, the Hispanic population increased 571 percent in Mecklenburg County from 1990 to 2000.

Of course the dramatic increase is due to all of those well educated, fluent english speaking hispanics being here legally .

Peter Gorman needs to manage schools in Juarez, Piedras Negras, Ciudad Acuna, or Nuevo Laredo. He would be safer and more comfortable and to him in a more appeasing environment.

Then the local Catholic Church can run Spanish School after American School just like the Greek Orthodox Churches do. When I was a kid we went to Greek School three days a week after regular school, 3:30-5:00 PM. In the mid 80s when conservatives worried that something like this would happen, we were called bigots, xenophobes or whatever language was in vogue for the "progressives" at that time. Now certain elements of that culture want a seperate school speaking thier own language. Isn't it obvious that there are elements of the Hispanic and African American that really don't want to melt in.

The bigger question is what are we (middle America) going to do about about it?

If you deal with realities then this isn’t as bad as it seems.

If you have kids that don’t speak english then they disrupt and slow the classes with english speaking kids and they never keep up. If you want to have a school that speaks only spanish then fine, but by the time they graduate they better be completely fluent in english.

Mandatory english classes starting from day one with goalposts that must be met as the kids progress through the school. If they don’t pass the test then they don’t graduate and get their degree until they do.

This is a win-win situation for both the state and the kids. They may not like it, but then again I never liked a lot of things I was made to do as a kid but was forced to do it anyway for my own good.

Our state is just crawling with them now. They’ve ruined some of my local schools which have gone to high achieving to very low achieving to the detriment of American citizens. They’ve brought new forms of crime and gang activity to my area. Many locals have been killed by their drunkin driving. They take over parking lots to find work and intimidate passing women and leave those lots filthy. It is an invasion but our national government has done very little. The administration has picked up the number of token prosecutions but we all know they and the pro-open borders crowd only want to pretend to do something to fix the problem. They want the ultra cheap labor.

We need a new Eisenhower style Operation Wetback! Sadly there is zero chance of that with a President Obama or a President McCain.

This is not the job of the public school system. If the parents want the kids to have an immersion program in their *native tongue* they should send them to a private school. I don't care to pay for someone to pass their culture on to their kids--that is THEIR job. Sheesh.

I used to live in Del Rio, Texas. For amusement we used to go to the Rio Grande River and watch the Border Patrol at crossings shoot at the wetbacks and send them back across the river. This was before the Rio Grande and Devil's River were dammed at Lake Amistad. I never saw wetbacks get shot but I did see their pants get stained.
