Walter Russell Mead is one of the most revered American foreign policy scholars in the U.S. He has authored some great books (chief among them, Special Providence), as well as many great articles. Last year he wrote the most powerful argument against Walt and Mearsheimer's The Israel Lobby.
Now Mead has a new article in Foreign Affairs, entitled "Why Gentile Americans Back the Jewish State". Although I usually refrain from just quoting articles without adding my own take, I think this time I'll do just that. Most people do not read such long articles, and are not Foreign Affairs subscribers, so I'm posting this as an appetizer which will hopefully lure people to the full article.

Jewish people have contributed a disporportionate percentage of knowledge and accomplishment in relation to their small numbers to world culture and knowledge in the arts, science, medicine and many other fields.
Check out the number and very high percentage of Nobel prizes awarded to those who happen to be Jewish. They're smart people. They stress learning and education.
There are less than 13 million Jews left in the world and there more than a billion Muslims and others lined up against them and hungering to exterminate them from the face of the Earth. Jews may be the ultimate underdog for much of the world's hate groups.
The Muslims and anti-Semites should be ashamed of themselves.

Not that there hasn’t been a few times when they have wanted to kick a little Israeli ass themselves., you understand.
Jews have been chosen from the beginning to be the race of people to reveal God and His Son. Whether Jews believe or not is not even relevant. Their religion, customs and culture reveal Jesus Christ. As a Christian, I have been "grafted in" or "adopted" into God's family. It has nothing to do with individual Jews being "good" or "bad" people. Jesus came by way of the Jewish blood line, He practiced Judaism, and observed all their Laws and customs. He taught in synagogues, not churches. He will come back to rule and reign in Jerusalem. There isn't anything about Israel that isn't important for the history of the world.
This responsibility hasn't been given to the Chinese, Indians, Japanese, or Americans. There is no plan "B" if you are a believer. God will move His will through the Jews in Israel, good for us or bad. There will be NO BLESSING for any nation that is against Israel.
People will be judged in a separate way than nations, but make no mistake, nations will be judged by their relationship with Israel. A Christian will suffer with their nation if their leaders turn against Israel.
I support Israel because God supports Israel. If Israel felt is was necessary to annihilate the Palestinians, that would be fine with me because I figure God planned it that way. Either way Jesus will come back soon and split the Mount of Olives in two and EVERYTHING will change.
If someone attends a church that DOESN'T support Israel, then they are haters of God and haters of their own family.

This is just not so. Christians believe that the Jews are the apple of God's eye. We don't believe America is the new Israel.

How could any rationally thinking human being, with only the basic historic facts of the history of the region, not support Israel? The more I read, see and hear the more I support Israel.
The Jewish people can be contrary and irritating and arrogant. Same for Israel. But Christians and those in the West should never forget that Israel is on the front line of Jihad. Israel is where the Muslim world is testing the Christian world. The Muslims are invading and softening up Europe via immigration and high birthrates so they have their sights on Europe too
