Today’s Illegals ‘Not Different, Just Newer’

by: Melinda Zosh, June 23, 2008

In 1750, Benjamin Franklin feared that German immigrants would de-Anglicize America. And 250 years later, in a nation where one in six young people under 18 are Hispanic, some politicians fear that Mexicans pose the same threat.

But one man says today’s immigrants aren’t “different, they’re just newer.”

Jason Riley, author of The Case for Open Borders, spoke at the CATO Institute on June 18 about letting more immigrants into the country. His research shows that Irish and German immigrants faced the same problems as today’s Mexicans.

“Franklin complained that German immigrants were too plentiful,” said Riley. “Franklin was one of most enlightened men of his day, [but] he lacked perspective.”

Riley said that Americans limit their perspectives and fear that new immigrants won’t assimilate. But the Irish did and “if America can assimilate the Irish, we can [assimilate] anybody.”

“The Irish were coming from a country where more than 80 percent of their country was rural…,” said Riley. “They were told they would never assimilate [into] an urban capitalist society.”

The Irish ended up settling in the most urban areas—Boston and New York. Riley said that “supply created its own demand.”

“The Irish did jobs that were considered even too lowly for slaves. They worked in mines,” said Riley. “In 1855, 90 percent of all domestic servants were Irish. That’s a snapshot of where the Irish started.”

Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, reminded the audience that Henry Ford was the product of poor Irish immigrants. And other sons and daughters of the Irish servants are successful today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau...

On the Polish side of my family, everyone settled in a ghetto conclave in Newark's east ward, where they sent their kids to a Polish language parochial school taught by nuns from the old country. Neither of my great-grandmothers learned English. They didn't have to. Their husbands did all of the dealing with "outsiders" and one of my great grandfathers was eventually made sanitation commissioner in Newark for delivering the Polish vote to the Dems.

The Italian side was poorer, but showed a similar pattern (no mixing with "outsiders" in the first and, to a lesser extent, second generation, first gen women not learning much English, etc.). My grandfather didn't speak a word of English until he attended the local public school at age 6, and basically spent much of his time fighting when he wasn't attending the sorry excuse for a public school he attended. Life was rough, the pols were corrupt, and it took World War II to make him an "American."

Of course the present illegal aliens are different. They have high rates of criminals especially pedophiles, rapists, and gang members (figures given on another FR thread), hide cells of terrorists planning to harm this country, and most refuse to learn English.

In 1750, we weren't a country yet. We were still colonies of England.

The Cato Institute may have been a good place at one time, but it has definately jumped the shark.

Here are some important points regarding immigration

1. nobody is faulting legal immigration for this mess
2. we have laws that govern immigration and they are not being followed
3. those who cut in line are cheating others who wait in line to come here
4. people who come here illegaly, have shown disrespect for our nation
5. people who come here illegaly, have refused to abide by our nation’s laws
6. people who come here illegaly, are tapping government services to the point that they are stressing government services to citizens
7. people who have come here illegaly, are jeopardizing the rights of citizens
8. people who come here illegaly are killing U.S. Citizens
9. people who come here illegaly are committing rapes, child abuse, robbery, theft and other crimes
10. all this wouldn’t be happening, if foreign nationals wouldn’t come accross our borders illegaly

If illegal immigration were not taking place, every crime they commit would not have taken place.

Every death is a death that wouldn’t have happened
Every rape is a rape that wouldn’t have happened
Every child that was sexually abused wouldn’t have been exposed to that crime
Every loss of a vehicle or other property would not have taken place
The strain on healthcare, education and services provided to citizens, would not be taking place
Our highways would not be as crowded.
Jobs out kids used to perform after school and in the summer would still be available

These immigrants are different. They are a net drain on our society. The down-side is far greater than the upside.

If it’s your mother or father or son or daughter or brother or sister or wife or husband that is killed raped or abused by one of them, you will never think of them as innocent victims again.

I call BS on articles of this type mainly because illegals are not just mexicans. This is another attempt to portray people who oppose illegals and support the law as racists. The new buzz word, to be used for anyone who disagrees with liberals. Illegals come in all flavors, Mexicans are probably, most likely, the most numerous but they are hardly the only illegals. I have the same complaints about all illegals, even Caucasian illegals, and want them out of my country, immediately if not sooner.

slightly misleading...

we now have laws to cover immigration, where before, we didn't.

Also misleading...”Irish do jobs too lowly for slaves”
the Irish, in general, came over as indentured servants and redemptioners.

There was little, no oversight regarding immigration until 1790 naturalization act.

So yes, different.

Seems like a pretty standard story. It was tough for immigrants. But they did assimilate and still maintained their heritage without making demands on society to accommodate them. They also worked hard and did not receive succor from the govt. teat. That's the difference.

That’s my point. The immigrants who came to this country in the latter part of the 19th Century in the mass exodus from Europe, did it LEGALLY. We should demand no different from anyone who enters the U.S. with the intention of staying.
I don’t care where they originate from.

When it comes to my "immigrant ancestors" I have yet to find a single one of them who could arguably have known English, whether "back home" or here in America (other than William Alexander).

For most of them it was first necessary to import English-speakers to the areas where they lived to even begin learning the language.

BTW, darned near all of them arrived here by the mid-1600s, and 99% by the early to mid-1700s. America has only recently become fully versed in English.

Jason L. Riley and his enlightened friends at the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board meeting in June 2007 and a classic Michelle Malkin Hot Air Vent.

http://hotair.com/archives/2007/06/07/new-vent-gorilla-warfare-against-the-open-borders-wsj/

A little set up: Michelle had commented previously on the WSJ’s no borders policy, they responded about a "Guerrilla" attack.

Michelle then hoists them with a "Gorilla" attack using the WSJ’s own video showing their hypocrisy with an entire editorial board meeting of middle aged white males, with one woman, sitting on the window sill, no place at the table for her, and one black man, no place at the table for him either.

But remember, we're the "irrational" bigots, if we want to control our borders and enforce the immigration laws.

Thanks for your additions. You are right.

I might quibble with you about the 50 million your kids would have to legalize though. If these 20 to 35 million illegals are amnestied, the chain migration will take care of every person who wants to come. Count on anywhere from 40 to 75 million people being added officially by the end of any amnesty deal.

Between 1890 and 1920, about 20 million legal immigrants entered the US. Many were from eastern Europe and were the proto-Marxists of that day. Read any newspaper from that period and you’ll see stories about the “red flag wavers.” The era was known for massive labor unrest, bombings, strikes and the destruction of many fine capitalist companies like Calumet & Hecla Mining Co.

These red flag wavers gave us the income tax, direct election of senators, women’s suffrage, social security and other “progressive” ideas we suffer with today.

This is what happens when you open the door to leftists who think society owes them everything.

Legalize the illegal entrants from Mexico and central America and further destruction of America will occur.

Give it a rest already with this. There's 5 billion people in the world, should we take them all in illegally because 250 years ago 100,000 Europeans sailed to America when there were little immigration laws? We absorb a million every year legally, is that not enough for the one-worlders?

Really? I would have never guessed.

With his facile analysis, two-dimensional insights into American society and failure to grasp what what's necessary for national health (more than just economic), I would have said he personifies the dangers of affirmative action (and especially for conservatives): that he's definitely way in over his head. In short, he's a right-wing version of Jesse Jackson and a token on the WSJ board.

Okay, I've said my peace. Now let the flaming begin.

Exactly.

We have the Russian Mafia, MS13 and other violent Hispanic gangs, Oriental home invasion gangs in my area - a combination of immigrants and illegal aliens, and terrorists.

We have the illegal aliens demonstrating in our streets demanding to be allowed to break our laws and receive perks at taxpayer expense. They are cluttering our cities and highways, damaging the environment, and consuming our limited resources.

We already have too many people. We are not responsible for Mexico and other countries over-breeding and we should not be a dumping ground for their undesirables as Castro was allowed to do. Embarrassing what wimps or traitors our so-called leaders are when it comes to protecting our national interest.
