The Security Council is the United Nations’ most powerful body. It is the one body in the United Nations system with the power under the UN Charter to dispatch military and peacekeeping operations, impose economic sanctions, mandate arms inspections, and enforce resolutions against international human rights violations. In short, it is charged with the guardianship of international peace and security.

Notice that what Iran is asking for is not that a specific country recieve a seat, but that an ideology gets a permanent seat - a ‘supremist’ ideology at that. If supremists ideologies deserve a seat in order to protect themselves, when will the KKK get their permanent seat on the council with veto power?

I am all for equal representation. BUT...on the other hand, accountability should be weighed in as well. Meaning anyone as a member MUST abide by the same set of governing rules to have a seat. Therefore abolishing Islamic laws that they seem to want to impose on the world. Also a set of equal or bill of rights for all citizens involved in the U.N.

Between the proposed Islamic permanent seat, the Russian & Chinese permanent seats and the American permanent seat, nothing of any meaning will get done without someone vetoing it.

IIRC, there have only been two times that any significant military action has been performed under the UN Security Council's direction. The first was the Korean War and the only way that got through was because the Soviets were boycotting because the "wrong" China was in the UN. The other time was the 1991 Gulf War which was passed because Russia was in its immediate post-Soviet thrashing and Iraq was no longer considered its client state.

Don't expect anything useful to ever be done by the Security Council as long as the permanent members have vetoes, and don't expect anything good to happen to the US if we don't have a veto.

Just because the adults have a lot of kids doesn’t mean the kids get a vote.

Even in the immediate aftermath of the horrors of 9/11, according to State Department and UN records, the Islamic countries have on average voted against the United States’ position on issues more than 80% of the time. These include our so-called allies such as Saudi Arabia, with a 90% record of opposition, and the Gulf States of Qatar (now a member of the Security Council) and the United Arab Emirates, with an 88% record of opposition. Even Kuwait, whom we saved from the clutches of Saddam Hussein, has voted against the United States 86% of the time. By contrast, the democratic state of Israel voted with the United States about 90% of the time.
