McCain sneaks up on Obama in money race

WASHINGTON - John McCain raised almost as much money as Barack Obama in May, placing him virtually on the same financial footing as his Democratic rival — a level of parity that would have been unimaginable just a few months ago.

The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting raised $21.5 million last month. He had $31.5 million in the bank, up $10 million from the end of April.

Obama had his weakest fundraising month of the year. The Illinois senator's campaign raised $21.9 million in May. The disclosure came a day after the Democratic candidate's reversal on the question of whether he would take public financing for his presidential bid, a move which drew sharp criticism from McCain.

In other words, the American people are waking up to the fact that Obama is a fraud, a phony smile on top of an empty suit, and a rock star without a rock star's musical talent. God BLESS America, McCain 2008.

You watch. Big money, which when it flows to Obama (from who know where) is an exciting sign of his widespread support among ordinary Americans, will magically become a sinister source of concern when it flows to McCain.

What can McCain spend the money on? I thought federal funding required him to only use that money for advertising and other campaign related activities.

I would not bet one cent on the “American People Waking Up” to the shuck and jive they are being fed. Think WWE, American Idol (which I wanted to spell Idle).

Good question!

Are there any FReepers who'd like to give a quick overview on "Campaign Fincane for Dummies 101?" I sure could use it. Public vs. private and who can spend what of each? McCain vs Obama?

Couldn't be that some of that "spectacular" Obama fundraising was actually "ABC" (anyone but Clinton) anti-Clinton money? What would THAT do to the MSM storyline?

Betty Casey, the fan who paid $2.1 million for that Limbaugh Harry Reid letter on ebay, apparently gave money to Obama.

I don't know what was behind this fine woman's decision to do so, but doubt it was because she wanted to see our first Bolshevik president.

Yeah, I need that. They said Obama was the first person to opt out, but I thought both Bush and Kerry and Bush and Gore had opted out as well.

I believe they opted out in the primaries, but not in the general election, which is what Obama is doing. Obama is the first to opt out of public matching funds in the general.

But I'm no expert, so I could be wrong.

Just wait until the June numbers come in. They'll be even lower, probably a substantial drop.

Again, I'm no expert so I could certainly be mistaken, but...

My understanding is that candidates can agree to "public matching funds".

This means that the government will match any contribution made to the candidate, up to some per contribution limit. I think the matching limit is $250 per contribution.

In return, the candidate agrees to limit their spending.

Obama has opted out of public financing, which means the government will not match his contributions, but he need not limit his spending. He clearly believes he can raise larger amounts of money on his own and doesn't want to limit his spending.

Speculation: the Moonbats are throwing more money at him than he can get from public funds and/or Obama will have more control over the private funding. Obama has $$ signs in his eyes.

You guys are in meltdown over a guy who THINKS he will be the next prez. It will never happen and those polls are skewed to Obama who they want you to think will win. just imagine the front yard BBqs on the White House lawn with Muslims and Black Panthers running around wild. Imagine Rev Wright leading the Senate prayer. Imagine Michelle Obama as first lady, are you ready to gag yet? This is running thru the mind of every voter and they will not vote for Obama and allow this to happen. Snap out of it, contribute to McCain.

On Obama’s website under ‘donations’, the question is asked, ‘What country are you from?’

I’ll bet he’s raked in MILLIONS from Saudi and every terrorist country you can think of.

As of April 30th in the Congressional Quarterly, only 8% of the Bush donors who maxed out their $2,000 contributions had donated at ALL to McCain. That’s $115,600,000.00 worth of money that he has not tapped.
