Family members of Elian Gonzalez, the refugee boy rescued from the ocean but returned to his Cuban father during the Clinton administration, called a press conference to protest Barack Obama's visit to Florida and the candidate's hiring of two staff members who were involved in sending the boy back eight years ago.

The family specifically points to Obama's foreign policy advisor, Greg Craig, who represented Elian's Cuban father during the custody battle, and Eric Holder, a member of Obama's vice-presidential search committee, who served as deputy attorney general during the much-publicized affair.
Delfin Gonzalez, Elian's great-uncle, stood in the front yard of the home where immigration agents had seized the boy at gunpoint on April 22, 2000. "My fear is that those who collaborated with Cuba's communist government and made a great mistake with a defenseless child will make the same mistake again against this nation that is facing danger from terrorism," he said.
Gonzalez told the Miami Herald earlier, "Some wounds are so deep that they do not heal over time, such as taking a child and sealing his fate to a communist dictatorship."

Obama is a Pinko.
Oh dear, does the Gonzalez family really want to bring that up?
Recall the joygasm of liberal racism and ethnic slurs aimed at the Miami Cubans during the Elian Affair. To the dems, Miami Cubans don’t count as an approved minority.
They’re too self-sufficient (and too republican).
Can’t trade for cigars with Cuba, but we can little children.
How could ANYONE be surprised that OBAMA is surrounded by Communists, Black Racists, Marxists, Local Terrorists, Islamist Racists, America Haters, Radical Pastors, Leaches, Corrupt politicians, etc, etc......
That is who OBAMA is.......
WHAT is the CHANGE Obama promises will bring hope to these miscreants who support him.....
The horror is — there are enough lunatics, assholes and morons in America to elect Obama...
I am so happy the Herald will likely fold within the next decade...
However, that being said, I do think that most Muslim societies think it’s perfectly ok to yank children from their mothers in America and keep them hostage in their own country and call it justified.
So. Do we keep him because we know we are *right*, and give up all acknowledgements to mothers who lose their children to other societies when their father kidnaps them? Or do we acknowledge the father’s parental rights, however screwed up I think they are and give the same authority to American mothers.
8 years later and I am STILL arguing with myself on this one.
That is exactly right.
BTW, a prediction — in a few years, if trends continue, the libs will hate Iraqis in a similar way.
This won’t hurt Oblama. Heck, even FReepers were divided pretty evenly at the time Elian was seized at gunpoint as to whether that was a bad thing for Janet Reno to do.
Obama lost Florida to Hillary by a significant margin. There are a lot of ‘Rats in Florida who supported Hillary but won’t vote for Obama. The Cuban vote in Florida has traditionally gone GOP, but Kerry picked up a bunch of them in 2004. This issue WILL push them back in the GOP column.
But the Cuban voters in Florida WERE NOT divided, they went 80% for Bush in 2000.
But I always hope. McQueeg is likely to get a lot of the Cuban votes, because a lot of the Cubans support illegal immigration. Sad but true....
I do remember the slurs of the media on the Cuban-American community. They are NOT approved minorities according to liberals.
Dear BO: When a child is returned to a surviving parent, things are not all bad. It is as it is intended to be.
If trends continue, I think Iraq could wind up as a smashing success. Every time a lib encounters an Iraqi or sees one on TV, it will be a reminder of how utterly wrong the Dims were on Iraq. They wanted failure and suffering in order to teach Bush (and America) a lesson. But here will be Iraqis going about their lives with satisfaction, in a country that wouldn’t have existed without George W Bush. Granted libs will have managed to rationalize their sicko defeatism, but still, on some level that would have to sting. And if Iraqis were to display even a particle of appreciation for the US’s efforts — oh man, the libs’ goat would be thoroughly gotten.
There, I fixed it for you.
I’ve known too many decent Muslims to believe that. The Muslim world just needs to go through its Enlightenment. Iraq is part of that process.
Yes, there are many decent Moslems. But I think you are overly optimistic.
That is worse than a horror, my friend. What you say is the exact truth. I know McCain is not the best, but no one on earth hopes Obama loses more than me. It is a little hard to put it into words, but I am worried about the future, and Obama is the reason. He is a bad dude.
Oh shoot, got onto the wrong thread. Sorry.
You fixed nothing. The kids father was there. He went up the ramp to the plane rather than run to the cameras. If you want to take all kids away from parents in communist countries, might I suggest you go to LAX and start with Air China. Kids leaving all the time for China.
I'm NOT talking about taking kids away from their parents.
There is NO DOUBT in my mind that Elian's father was coerced by Castro into saying he wanted his son back.
Even within communism there are degrees of oppression. The FACT that Chinese citizens are ALLOWED to visit the United States should demonstrate that for you.
So, if they can visit the US that makes it okay for them to keep ther child and if not they cannot? Perhaps you can work the Mexico City airport and stop kids from getting on the flights to Havana.
You seem to overlook the FACT that Elian's mother BROUGHT him to live in the United States.
Try to think like a normal person. One parent dies, there's a child. Now let's see, who is responsible for the child? Oh. I don't know, just a guess, the the surviving parent!
Elian’s mother sacrificed her life for her son’s freedom. What do liberals know of sacrifice? Liberals hate the ones who make the sacrifices. They especially hate freedom. They love communism though.
While we're at it, why don't you explain your philosophy of parenting which allows you and some other dogooders to yank the kid away because oif the country he lives in.
How do you rail at Reno for sending in the swat team while you would take the kid from his father? What's the difference?
How about YOU try to refrain from PERSONAL ATTACKS (suggesting that I cannot think like a "normal" person) when you are defending Clintonista actions carried out at the behest of Castro.
The difference is the facts. Your little fairy tale is a crock. Elian was living in the United States, with his family, thanks to the sacrifice his mother made. You might actually see the facts if you could pull your face out of Reno’s crotch long enough to look.
Þ
After you insulted me by "fixing" myy post, you sure are thin skinned.
How do you rail at Reno for sending in the swat team while you would take the kid from his father? What's the difference?
NOBODY "took" Elian away from his father. His MOTHER, who had custody of him took him to the United States. (And don't even bother with some laughable response that she didn't have permission from a Cuban court to take her son to the United States.)
The father’s rights and responsibilites supercede the cousins etc.
The mother DIED! Why are you responding to some one who’s personally attacking and whom youy are trying to get suspended?
That wasn’t an insult. I mistakenly assumed that members of a CONSERVATIVE forum would side with freedom over communism. Obviously, I was wrong.
I’m off to work. If I can, I’ll be back later.
Is there any greater form of child abuse than submitting them to imprisonment and indoctrination in a communist country? I don’t think so. What Bubba and Jackboot Janet did to that boy was a pathetically evil act. I cannot respect the opinion of anyone who advocates such a policy.
Funny, I was under the impression that in a child custody case the best interests of the child were ALWAYS paramount. And I cannot envision as scenario where a child is better off living under an oppressive communist regime.
>>The fathers rights and responsibilites supercede the cousins etc.
I just about choked when I read this! I scrolled immediately to the top of the page to reassure I was still on FreeRepublic when I read your analysis of Elian and pops.
Elian’s “Father” is by most all measures Fidel Castro. Fidel superseded any rights the biological father may have expected. Elian’s “father” is the communist state. Period. That is how communism as in Cuba works.
Since it was all out in the open for reasonable people to see since it unfolded, only the most powerful of denial could filter out that simple truth. The truth glares in the fate of poor little Elian, now as much a puppet of the communist state as Howdy Doody and his dad as Mortimer Snerd.
It is possible you may still find support from a few remaining closet liberals on this forum, or those who substitute emotion for rational thought or have a specific blind spot but otherwise you are solidly in the company of the far left when you make preposterous claims like that.
There is no rational defense for this atrocity, only the defense proffered by the communists and their sympathizers on the left and those blinded to the facts.
That's because we live in a relatively-free nation where people have the right to voice all sorts of opinions without violence ensuing.
What unnerves me is these same thought processes of shaky reason, vigorous emotion, will activate in the voting booth and give us the ObamaNation.
Not in the United States of America. You seem to have us confused with Cuba.
People are not property here. The best interests of the child is the deciding factor in our court system. But please, don’t let the truth interfere with your cheerleading for communism. If you ever made the mistake of acknowledging the facts, you’d have to switch sides. You’re more valuable to the cause of freedom right where you are; serving as an example of the alternative.
Þ
Elian probably cost Gore Florida and therefore the presidency. Maybe the same will hold true for Osama.
