Quite typical of Oliphant to write a puff piece on a guy whose main argument in his campaign for the US Senate was that his opponent's mother was Jewish.

Hard to tell which of these guys is more of a POS than the other.

Ditto here. Marines never demean the Corps. Marines serve America. It follows that Marines never demean America. Webb, despite his service and that of his sons, has done both and therefore, is no different than Murtha.

EXACTLY. Webb played the whole “Born Fighting” hey-I’m-a-redneck-like-you-hyuk-hyuk shtick masterfully in his campaign. Combine that with the fake manufactured outrage of Macacagate, and even then he was barely able to scrape out a victory. Since then, with few exceptions (offshore gas drilling is the only one that immediately comes to mind) he’s been an obedient footsoldier for Dingy Harry.

Make no mistake. The news media, editorial writers, and political pundits won that election for Jim “Born Idiot” Webb. Larry Sabato finally got to nail George Allen’s scalp to the wall after God-knows-how-long of trying. I lived up there in ‘06, watched the campaign, voted for Allen, and stayed up until zero-dark-thirty on election night watching Born Idiot somehow pull out a win. Webb did what Democrats have to do in Virginia. He relied on a compliant news media, and ran right to fool people into thinking he was conservative. Mark Warner is going to do the exact same thing this year, and he may well pull it off.
